Only on t.v. would you see a father who works to feed 8 kids and a wife just to come home in time to play ball and have 5 or 6 people fall on his back.
Grant Goodeve - what a WASTE of good film!! what a hack. what else was he in really besides this? nothing! this show was a career killer for almsot the entire cast
But it's better than the bullshit that's out there now
and if it wasn't for this show (along with the brady bunch), we wouldn't have reality shows such as john & Kate Plus 8 later Kate plus 8 and 19 Kids and counting.
@MsTexas73 LOL I never noticed that before, but you're right! I'm sure they had a lot of fun with that, and I'm sure it's a nice memory for all of them even if some of them did get a bruise here or there! lol
I like this theme song better than the plate of homemade wishes they spewed out later. That just felt a little too corny, even in the late 70s/early 80s.
hey klwewf, I agree, they did air Hogans Hero's and Adam 12 for a while, but I agree on Andy Griffith, its run forever, time for a change, Eight is Enough is one of them definately
@klwewf that is so true. imagine how great TV Land could be if it was to air shows like this. if i owned that station, i would make it the best retro TV station in the world. i would bring back all the classics of the 70s and 80s. why the hell is the George Lopez and Everybody Loves Raymond on a station like TV Land. all about copyrights, ownership and liscensing, i guess.........
@klwewf I agree, and have said the same thing for years! Everytime I turn on TV Land, Andy is on. Its NOT that great of a show, yet thats all they seem to air! It is litterally the first show about NOTHING, and watching it proves that fact.
The thing that bothers me the most is the ridiculous still poses of Betty Buckley and Grant Goodeve, They are perhaps the most unflattering shots I can imagine!
I remember hte football opening more..and it is such a good show. I only had a brother..i wanted tons of brothers and sisters. It was just a good show..takes me back
It's almost Christmas, and sometimes the independent channels take the two-parter "Yes Nicholas, There is a Santa Claus" and make it a two-hour block of Xmas programming.
this is my favorite of the themes and openings...the best thing to happen to the family was Abby...and yes I remember The Graduates...but don't Joanie and Abby become closer after this?
Okay, never mind. The first close up is of Betty Buckley, but she looks like Mary in that shot, and she's in Mary's position from Version 1. So, uh...how about that weather today? ahahahahaa
Xemxi...I agree...Abby and Mary DID favor *Joannie favored her too* which is why Abby was PERFECT to be a Bradford!
Also I think they did a good job casting all of the Bradfords...*except Susan who doesn't look like Tom, Joan, nor Abby*...however all the others either favor Tom, Joan, or both, or Abby or both Tom and Abby...cute.
I didn't remember Betty Buckley being in the Season 2 credits, and it looks odd that they feature her after the close-up of Mary, then repeat Mary's close-up. Is this the real deal, or edited?
Eight Is Enough debut on ABC then on Syndication soon after in 1979. Networks like F/X actually had the rights to it in the mid 1990s then PAX got it and TV Land. Its been on METV over the last two years, but after April it just vanished.
I know it's petty, but this was when they went from all capital letters on the beginnings, to that Sixties-ish lowercase that unerringly reminded me of the printing used on the store brand products from Alpha-Beta Supermarkets.
I prefer the first season intro--even though the high flute on that intro punctuates somewhat like a Disney film, it underscores the feeling of optimism and unity in the Bradford family. Flat out best scene--Season Three, "The Graduates" with Joanie going ballistic on Abby, then later making up and Abby saying that she couldn't be Joanie's mother, but instead they could be just friends. I still recall that powerful and realistic moment most vividly.
When it comes to "Bradford Kid Chews Out Abby" scenes, I prefer the one where Tommy gets upset with Abby because she won't give him test answers to give to kids who are bullying him at school. She does eventually give him the answers, but he stands up to the bullies and quietly returns the test to her - no big sloppy make-up scene - just silence.
When I was reading your response, I recalled that episode when Abby was threatened at knife-point by one of her students (late in the show, I think it was in 1980 or 1981).
Herb I like your comment about the first season intro. I also liked the second one a little better tho. The rest of the time Grant Goodeve's rendition really sucked.
It's good to be acknowledged that something you've written has made someone think: "Yeah, that's the way it was for me, too!," or approximately so! Thank you very much. ;-)
Hey, do you have the episode where Grant Goodeve and Betty Buckley sang a duet for a fundraiser? He played guitar and she sang. Also-- this may be the episode-- do have Dianne Kay doing her dance routine for TV fundraiser the family was involved in? She was the cutest girl on Earth back then:D
(According to ImDb)That was Season 2, "Who's on First" (5-17-78) when Betty Buckley sang "So-La" with Grant Goodeve who accompanied her on acoustic guitar. (The other time Abby sang was in Season 5, 1981, "The Best Little Telethon in Sacramento," when she sang "Travelers on a Star," with a woman accompanying her on flute.) I can't remember which one Dianne Kay did the dance on, but I know she did it, just not sure which episode. Maybe posters will put on Betty Buckley's performances.
Just the Ten of Us was pretty good. Lizzie McGwire was good but it was more for kids and teenagers. As for EIE, I remember it airing on Pax, and maybe once on TV Land (a Christmas episode or something).
Just the Ten of Us was really good along with Full House and others.
7th Heaven is the last great one that I can remember.
I mean TV has got to have sitcoms and family comedy-dramas on air all the time. Kids need to grow up on this instead of smart thinking shows like The Office, which is the perfect example of how the half hour comedies are just ruined.
No - it's from the episode where Auntie V returns and wants to give the family a new house. The episode with Don Johnson was from before Abby married Tom, so she's not in the opening credits of that one.
Ah yes...oops, meant to place that remark on the first theme. I just knew that two episodes of Eight Is Enough ran on TVland that weekend...it was the Eight Is Enough Season 2 (First version)...sorry.

The fact that they replaced the first "8 is enough" mom with Betty Buckley was probably very normal in the divorce mad 70s.
