This was the version that made me first appreciate this beautiful song. Everything is wonderful - the inclusion of the eloquent intro, the fantastic arrangement and most of all the impeccable musicianship and style of the great Nat King Cole. Swoon...
I agree with rockahead. The beginning of the song transports you to a different era, and his voice is so mellifluous. A brilliant piece of musicianship
Th guy who arranged this song for Nat King Cole was not Nelson Riddle it was Godon Jenkins but I do feel that this arrangement and performance is the definitive version of a great song. Nat made it his own.
From the 1st day I heard this - in the days of my youth, I fell big time over it. I think the arrangement was by Nelson Riddle, but not totally sure. Probably find it if I Gurgled it.
Probably my favorite Nat King Cole song. The first time I heard this song was in the movie Sleepless in Seattle and was taken away by such beauty in a song. This makes me think of a dark, cool night. While above your head stars glow endlessly as the wind blows by slow, sudden and smooth
The interesting thing about this version is that Hoagy Carmichael orginally wrote the melody to a rather jazzy beat, hoping that it would be a more sure commercial success. I don't know who did the arrangement for Nat Cole but it's a huge improvement, no slight intended to Mr. Carmichael.
Someone put THIS version together with pictures of "The Emerald City", aka San Francisco, which adds More romance to Nat's singing.

arrangers like Nelson Riddle can never be surpassed...Capital Records only used the best for Nat and Frank.

This was also composer Hoagy Carmichael's favorite version (out of 500!)
Just about brought him to tears.

NKC had a beautiful voice!
My husband was lucky to have seen NKC perform at a St. Louis nightclub in 1951.
