I think its just the effect he used because i've known shows where john uses a strat and it sounds seriously funky, so i don't think its necesarily a guitar issue.

Yes it sounds funkier with the tele but in this show he uses the chorus with the strat wich makes it sound funny but nice...Anyway it's way twangier without the chorus.
