Can someone please explain to me exactly how this happened (that is, NU and OU playing against each other)? I mean, was the Big 8's tiebreaking system that screwed up back then that they couldn't determine its Orange Bowl representative by final Top 20 polls (equalivent to final BCS polls now)? I'm only asking B/C of this year's BCS NC Game, and this was the last time that two current conference teams met in the same bowl game.
@LMCMInterloper -Nebraska was the Big 8 champion that year due to beating OU 17-14 laate in the season. In those days bowls did not have tie ins other thyan league champs so it was a free for all to get the opponent(other than the Rose Bowl) and the Orange Bowl managed to snag Oklahoma for a rematch of the epic 17-14 Husker win in Lincoln. Nebraska may have been in stronger position had the not lost to Missouri late in the year making them co-champs. NU was the auto qualifier by beating Oklahoma
Michigan, Ohio state, Michigan state,Iowa ,Penn state etc. is hardly a second tier conference. Good choice Nebraska, your going to the king of football conferance's. And this comes from a Missouri fan.
@CoachDub25 Nebraska left because Texas gave us an ultimatum, remember? When they were talking about forming the Pac 16 with Oklahoma and Texas and immediately backed out after we left? Pretty disrespectful. I mean Nebraska and Oklahoma made the conference what it is today, starting way back when it was the MVC. We let 4 Texas teams in, 15 years later they act like they own the Big 12. Quite frankly they can keep it. Should have left it the Big 8 if you ask me.

@ All-American Athletes than any other university in the world, and always will Football, or any sport, is secondary to a real education, which is something the suthern schools will never understand, for they buy, beg bribe kids to go and rep them, but leave them if hurt or non producing, as far as grades go? come on half the UT athletes cannot read or write at jr high level, proven facts.

How soon people forget that after the southwest conference folded (cheating scandle Texas didnt get caught that eyar but SMU got the death penalty, so the Big 8 allows 4 texas teams in, and then Texas makes the deal with Jones keeping the championship at Texas stadium, stealing millions from the smaller norther schools revenue. Texas had signed it's own TV deal
Some great names in this game--the late Andra Franklin who later played for the Miami Dolphins and Reggie Kinlaw who graduated from Miami Springs High School.
WOW! How things have changed! Just heard the annoucer say the Nebraska OL line was "HUGE" at 246 lbs a man!...You can barely play TE at that weight now, let alone OL!!
