getting scooped means another research group working on the same topic published their findings before you did- makes your publication after that redundant. There's always a race as to "who publishes first"

Yeah, I think some of the references are specific to their school or department because I am a grad student and I don't know what being scooped is. I can relate to the 'Where is my PI?' song though, among other things.
