I have a question, being new to external flashes I have been thinking of what to get. watching this video makes the 430EX II seem like the right chose. But why would I not take the Metz mecablitz 44 AF-1 ? It looks similar specs and is about 100€ cheaper.
Great summary of the 2 flash units. I was going to buy the 580, but watching this video has shown that the 430 will be sufficient to meet my current needs. Thank You for saving me £140. Merry Christmas!!
I am buying my first flash and you really helped me to decide:) I'm gonna go with the 430:). But I have a question, if I want to shoot sequence, isn't the 580 really better? Thanks for your answer
Thx for the straightforward help. I am trying to decide between these two. The 580 is so expensive! I would like to do some strobe work. But can I get a remote trigger and have it trigger the 430? Same deal, right? I also have a Nikon Speedlight. How much can I use that with my Canon 5D Mark II? Thx again!
I bought the 580 today for shooting night time sports, seeing that I'm not in the market for a 2.8 telephoto. I mainly use my 75-300 that has an aperture of about 4-5 which was just not letting in enough light for me.
does the 430 shoot off camera? what is that feature called? i want a flash i can use wirelessly aka not mounted on the camera but only need one flash alone. ...whats more is id like to adjust it from the camera settings if possible or have it communicate with the camera in some way...can someone shed some light on this for me?
oh and are there any third party vendors that provide those features?
DO any of these flashes run continuously? I film music videos and need a flash on my camera that stays on all the time. i have a canon t2i. Any suggestions?
@marcelododox - Haven't had a chance to try the new 320EX yet, but usually the Canon flashes are compatible with any Canon camera that has a hot shoe. But if I were you I would check the Canon site for specs or ask your camera store before spending, just to be safe.
Mr. Steele can the 580ex II (used as a Master flash) set off the 430ex II? I have a 580ex II and was about to purchase another flash and did not know if i needed to get another 580ex ll or if I could just get a 430ex ll.
Hey, how are you? I just recently started school , I need to buy a new speedlite without breaking the bank account. I was wondering if you have heard of the new 320 ex just yet. I know it is set for pre-order......
You forgot to mention that the Speedlite 580EX II is gasketed for dust and moisture resistance. Maybe some might want pair it with the weather sealed Canon 7D and a waterproof L lenses to go out and shoot some dolphins.
Thanks, this really helped me decide between the 430exII and the 580. I was considering the 580 just for the extra flash power, but it is a lot more money, so I am now happy with the 430 due to your recommendation. Thanks heaps, Mate!
@steeletraining I was cleaning out my inbox today and saw your reply from a while back, I actual meant the G11. I do however agree with your points concerning the 270ex with an SLR. I myself use the 580EX (not 580Ex II) with my Canon 60D. Before that (and at the time of my original post) I used the 580EX with a Canon XTi. I do use the the 270EX with my Canon G11. This video of yours is very helpful for those looking for advice, and was very well done.
Hi Mr Steele,I'm using my 7D for the occasional function or wedding and mostly family portraits. The 7D has wireless built in flash control and I'm wondering if I really need the 580EX..Any advice?
@STEPPHAN7 - Yes, you can use the built-in flash on the 7D or 60D to control remote flashes instead of buying a 580EX as a master unit. It's a long-overdue feature that Canon is finally starting to implement. However, it does lack certain aspects of using a 580 as your master: the built-in flash has less range (to signal distant remotes), and it can't help you focus with an infrared beam in low light like the 580 can. However, it's built-in and it saves you $400! Thank you, Canon!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. I cant thank you more for your valuable advice in this video. I was about to sell my wife to buy a second 580 untill i saw this video.
me and my dad have both the 580EX and the 580EX II, they are both great, and I men GREAT flashes, they are powerful, especially useful when using it in as a fill flash for high light situations, normally, my shots with my 580 are very bright, sharp, and also colorful, I think that IF you are starting to get into strobist (or someone who uses flash Off-Camera Correctly), go for the 430 first, then move up to the 580, but DONT DONT sell the 430, you might find you will need a second flash sometime
Excellent review. Very articulate, and you helped confirm what I was thinking about the 270EX, that it would not be appreciable different than the pop up flash on my T1i. I will go with the 430. Thank you for the time you spent sharing your knowledge. Much appreciated.
@xxMcQuackxx - Yes, you are exactly right. A compact camera with hot-shoe like the G10 is the ideal use for the 270EX. Maybe I was a little unfair to the 270 in the video, because I only use DSLR cameras, where I don't find the 270 useful. But small cameras like yours are the exception and it's a great solution for them.
@juliann0980 - The lens is my favorite Canon lens for the crop-sensor bodies (such as the Rebel, 40D, etc.) the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS. It's not cheap, but it's sharp and fast.
G’day Phil many thanks for your invaluable flash photography tips.. by going through your videos I’m very much interested in off camera photography..Can I use 430ex on my 550D? Will 430ex work efficiently off camera? This would be my first flash.. I’m on a tight budget can’t afford 580 at the moment..on your video at 3.15 you have specifically mentioned to get 580 for off camera photography..sorry for my ignorance I don’t understand this part..What are the other items I need to get to use 430?
@Kiraraa500 - Your cheapest way to get off-camera flash with your 550D would be a 430EX II flash, plus a low-budget radio trigger like the Yongnuo RF-602. The 430 makes a great first flash for use on-camera, or off-camera with radio triggers. Hope that helps you.
@steeletraining Many thanks for your prompt response..just had a quick look on ebay.. Yongnuo RF-602 is about AUD $70 and Pixel TR-332 Wireless TTL Flash Trigger is AUD $148..after going through your “video wireless flash triggers” I understand the importance of TTL..Not sure if I should get RF 602 or TR332 I would like your opinion on this..Cheers
@Kiraraa500 - Those Pixels look promising but all the TTL triggers are still sort of in the "early development" phase and a bit buggy, while the RF602 are mature and solid (albeit manual). I'm waiting a while longer to start investing in TTL triggers until a clear leader emerges with a bullet-proof product.
Now, this is a useful review! It answered all the real questions. If you are worried about the finish or stuff that doesn't matter this isn't for you.
@aronchas - Even though the 580 has more power, when I'm carrying the flash on-camera all day I usually go for the 430 just because it's lighter and a bit smaller, which makes it more comfortable to lug around.
@steeletraining Hi Phil When would you need the power of the 580? Under what circumstances would you see the difference between these two? I will probably use the flash mostly for people shots (outdoor- portraits), probably at a distance of no more than 15 feet and I will use the flash with the canon 15-85mm lens. Can I go for 430exii??? or 580ex???Please advice
From the place where i'm going to buy my speedlite the difference between the 430 and 580 is only about $50US. so would u recommend i get the 580 since it their price is practically the same? however i will only be using it as a on camera flash.
@Thuglife1000 - That lens is the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS. I think it's the best mid-range Canon zoom for crop-sensor cameras like the Rebel, 40D, etc.
@Hart16789 - A speedlite like the 430EX will give you much more capability than the built-in flash on your 7D - and with the 7D you can even trigger the 430EX remotely for off-camera flash! It's definitely worth buying.
wow, great tips! i'm going off to art college this year to study photography and i really didnt know which one of the two to buy.. but now that i know about the master/slave quirks they have i'll definitely go for the 580 ex II since i have a lot of studio work ahead of me:) thanks a lot!
@Billbos1990 - Personally, when I go to bars, etc. I usually put the smaller 430EX II on my camera just to carry less weight. But if you intend to do other things with it where you need longer range or Master capability, then you may as well get the 580 to cover all your bases. --Phil
