I agree with what he has to say about the president. I think though the president has to wear too many hats. And has too many things to do. It was interesting that he spoke about Reagan and Bush but not Clinton and Carter during that time. Really all Presidents have so much to do and have to create so much of an image that the president can't really think about policy. There is just too much of it for one person to really be an expert on no matter what adviser can tell him.
(1:12) " As long as we have industrial feudalism rather than industrial democracy -- that means tyrannical, totalitarian institutions running the economy... instead of industrial democracy like workers' control and management -- politics will be the shadow cast by business over society. "
Because it runs from the top down, in a hierarchical way. Economic decisions are made at the top, and the rest are forced to run to catch up. In essence, it's the same as the Soviet system, except that the coercion lies in hunger, and not the truncheon(although that will get used when necessary).
On the Nader stream, we elect electors, but if the plurality of the popular vote in a state is won by a candidate, he gets all of the electoral votes of that state... So elections aren't directly bought and still have elements of indirect democracy...
Anticonsumer: Hello. I don't believe it's all that "brilliant" for NC to state that the presidency and the Queen only fill ceremonial roles. That's obvious. NC's ability lies in his encyclopedic knowledge in world affairs and how he puts this information together to give effective answers. He's always the first person, however, to ask people to find the facts out for themselves.

Command: I think he was referring to an individual firm, and how management controls workers, instead of workers controlling management.

I don't see how he describes our economy as "command / controlled". I've heard the Soviet economy described that way...
