@Fchyeahh Basically, yes. Some of the computer drives are also Blu-ray burners. But they all play Blu-rays the same, plus computer drives are quite easy to keep the firmware updated.
@biologyphp in the oldest youtube all the videos were in 240p, so you add the "&fmt=18" in the URL of the video and then you forced the video to be in HD (Not HD just like 480p or something like that...but it was awesome :') )

Sean, I don't know if you've ever mentioned it, but what were your thoughts on the Superbit DVD format. I first head about them back in 2005 when my dad updated the home theatre system and one of the workers at Best Buy recommended them. He didn't see much of a difference in picture, but did on sound. I noticed slightly better picture and great improvement on sound. It was almost the same with Blu-ray for both of us, except the first thing I noticed was much better black levels. That was in 2008
Anyone who says there is not a difference between the picture and sound quality of Blu Ray and DVD needs to go and see an optician fast or alternatively go and get yourselves glasses! Blu Ray Rules!!!!!!!!
Since you seem to know a lot about video. Have you seen a movie or watched HD TV on a really nice LED tv? Even though the picture quality is amazing, I don't like it because it looks so real. It takes away the "movie" feeling and makes you feel like you are watching a stage play performance or something.
@BehindTheLight99 That's because they display you were watching had the refresh rate set too high. A Blu-ray movie runs at 24 fps, the same as film. In stores, displays are often set to run at the highest possible refresh rate, which introduces motion compensation and gives the image a "video-like" look. Better TVs have a "cinema mode" which does not use motion compensation, but displays the image at the correct 24 fps. Displayed correctly, Blu-ray is incredibly film-like.
@BehindTheLight99 I agree, I can't stand seeing movies displayed that way. Film isn't supposed to look like video! But at least now you know it's something we can control ourselves, which is good.
@BehindTheLight99 In short, it's the display that's doing that, not Blu-ray. LCD, LED, Plasma, doesn't matter. It's just about having your TV's settings correct for film viewing. It's easily fixable by making a few minor adjustments and will give you the most jaw-droppingly film-like experience you've ever seen in your home.
What are the differences between 1080p and 1080i? Because my PS3 does not allow me to play full 1080p as my TV does not have the capacity to play at that resolution, but I still watch Blu-rays under 1080i. Do you think I am missing a lot by not having full 1080p resolution?
I love how you took the time to show this to people, so they can move on with their lives, and stop using DVD once and for all! It's too bad you can't restore old digital video files to a 720p standard, but it's possible to do miracles with film.
@ChaosBirth12 No, they're Region coded like DVDs. Though a lot of manufacturers leave them Region Free. Just check some reviews before buying if you're wondering about whether or not a title is Region locked or not.
people are on crack if they can't tell the difference from 480p and 1080p.
What is really a trip is seeing movies at native 24 hz and how fricken smooth it is compared to the jerky and judder people accept 60hz multiplier frame rates.
@Paperclown Absolutely! Or even worse people who LIKE using even higher refresh rates like 120 and 240hz for watching movies, loading it up with motion compensation and the like...film isn't supposed to look like VIDEO, folks!
@theredsoxfan18 HUGE difference, helps if you have a monitor capable of 1080p as well...depends on the movie though...how well it was transferred etc...
@theriser17 No. It's all digital, so it looks the same no matter what player you're using. The only differences you might encounter are the cheaper players tend to load slower, and may not be as easy to keep the firmware up to date.
@max124891 Watch the DVDs shown in this video. They ARE as bad as they are shown. No exaggeration, everything in this video is untampered screenshots taken from each title.
@XRioteerXBoyX You can take uncompressed screenshots of anything if you have a BLu-ray drive for your computer. I got these pictures from a home video forum that does this kind of thing all the time.
@XRioteerXBoyX Dual layer discs hold more data than single layer discs. If there is more space on the disc, then a higher bitrate can be used for the movie resulting in better quality. Higher bitrate means less pixelization in fast moving scenes, and overall crisper picture quality. Single layer DVDs hold 4.7 GB of data, dual layer holds 8.5. Single layer Blu-rays hold 25 GB of data, dual layer is 50.
Well even in my bad eyesight aka bifocals I can tell a difference. Is it ok to watch DVDs on a Blue Ray player? My tv is less than 2 years old & 40 inches or dang close & it says FULL HD in the manual (& yes I checked). I honestly don't want to buy again movies in HD unless it is a brand new Blu Ray release.
I'm wondering something: how can they make something look sharper and cleaner than it was at the origin? I mean, this movie made in the 20's, it was on a film and the quality couldn't be better because the camera didn't allow them to have a better quality than that. So how can they make an image look so much better than it really was?
@lilo621 Because they didn't. That IS how good it really was. They went back to the original negatives and made a new, pristine transfer from those elements. I think you seriously underestimate just how high resolution film actually is. 1080p isn't even close.
You know, it's like this, DVDs is like VHS quality, and Blu-Ray are like DVD quality, and soon there will be a time when Blu-Ray will be the "DVD" quality and we'll have something even better then Blu-Ray.
Yes, VHS is superior when it comes to grainly grindhouse classics that make you feel all dirty inside. :D The Basement retro 80s horror collection is for YOU! Also, House of the Devil by Ti West. :D
@lattehead You should be able to right-click and "Save As" If not, try going straight to the zaranyzerak website's music section and you should be able to save it from there the same way. Glad you like!
I have to say this, I do think dvd is/will turn into the vhs in a year, I couldn't beleive how cheap The hangover part 2 was on dvd when it came out, only 12 bucks, the quality of the dvd boxes are becoming so cheap and terrible, if you see a commercial for a movie being released, they say for Blu ray and don't even mention the extra dvd disc in the pack, I'm asking my mom for my brithday next month to get me a HD plasma in my room so I can watch blu ray.
I never could really explain to my friends and family what the difference was between blurays and dvds but now i can show them this and see for themselves. Awesome video! I love your work keep it up.
I've always wanted to know how they've managed to make the much older films such as The General have so much more detail... is it digital enhanement or do they literally take the old film stock and re-scan it at a higher resolution...
@VigorAzul They take the original film and re-transfer it. Film is much higher resolution than 1080p, so the results can be spectacular when done well.
I just stick with dvd. I like to collect movies but im only going to watch the same movie once a year at the most. for me to buy blu rays would only be to display in my collection cause i wouldnt watch them enough to care if the pictures any better. Id rather buy more dvd movies then buy blue rays for better picture but not have as many movies.
@emocody1324 I often get Blu-rays for the same price as the DVD version, so I always opt for the Blu-ray. While I may not watch SOME movies as often as others, i'd rather have the better quality for when I do. You just have to know how to shop.
@Zaranyzerak I do check ebay and amazon or see if any stores are having sells. Im going to buy avatar on blu ray because its on blu ray on ebay for a dollar or 2 more. im willing to pay that. If i can get the blu ray for a few dollars more or the same price as dvd then definitely. it would be dumb to buy the lesser quality dvd when i can get the superior for about the same. but when i have to pay over 5 dollars i get dvd unless its a movie i really love. im cheap lol.
the DVD will someday silently have to hand the torch up to blu ray. just like the VHS did to the DVD. and maybe, the blu ray might hand the torch up to something better someday
@opsymon12 I doubt that will happen anytime soon. They've made it so that you can ad multiple layers on a blu ray disk, making it up to 100GB of space. We curently have half that. Its gonna be here a while.
I a little bit of a noob when it comes to this stuff, so the screen shots you're showing are first how you'd originally view the film on DVD, then you put the same DVD in a blu-ray player and it transforms the picture into amazing quality? or do you have a copy of that movie in blu-ray as well? also, can you put in any DVD you have in a blu-ray player and it will read it? sorry for the stupid questions, I'm still living in DVD age
@WiggyPlease18 No, it is how the DVD version looks vs how the Blu-ray version looks. No matter what player you put a DVD into, it will still only be DVD quality. Mos tplayers will "upconvert" the image so it looks a bit more bearable on a HDTV, but it's still only DVD quality (which is 6X lower resolution than Blu-ray). And yes, Blu-ray players can also plays DVDs. So you can easily enjoy content from both formats on one machine.
blueray will replace dvd if you look at films, but it wont replace it for 100%, remember there are still cd`s around, blue ray wll not be replace at the computr that quick, and with in 10-15years the blue ray will be replaced by hvd anyway.
@rubikfan1 HVD isn't going to happen, sorry. In 10-15 years other storage mediums will have far surpassed what it can do, for a far lower price. If it was going to have any impact, it should have been THIS generation. They missed the boat. I can't actually believe they're even still bothering with it at this point, such a waste of time.
@MrCrazyKool Kino, the company that put that one out, has since given the same treatment to a bunch of other silent-era films as well! I recommend checking out The Complete Metropolis - it's fantastic.
@toSTONEiGO Wrong. Physical media will continue to co-exist alongside downloadable formats, just as it always has. Did mp3 kill CD? No. Physical media will continue to exist indefinitely, for those who prefer the superior quality, and actually want something physical they can hold in their hands, display on their shelf and collect. There is plenty of demand for both. The only thing that is changing is the retail environment, moving more to online sales than brick and mortar stores.
@Zaranyzerak I agree. I'll always prefer Physical Media over Downloadable Formats. I know people who prefer to buy Music and Movies online, and they say that the quality is just as good as a CD, DVD, or Blu-Ray. I don't believe it though.
@Zaranyzerak I think "physical" media is going to change. People like to have a physical product sitting on their shelf, but it is more profitable for companies to digitally distribute media. In my opinion, there will eventually be physical items you buy that contain codes for a digital download. That way you get the case to show off, and the company saves on pressing discs.
@sjuggalo That's a possibility, but at this point in time the actual quality you get from a downloadable version isn't anywhere near what you get with an actual Blu-ray. For digital downloads to reach that same level, we need higher bandwidth and faster connections for it to be viable. Maybe once fiber optic networks become more widespread. Until then, downloads won't even be close in quality. Unless you download an uncompressed 25-50 gig file, of course...
@Zaranyzerak Very true. Also, people like menus, extras, etc., so publishers would have to figure out how to deliver that in a downloadable, easily accessible way. Not to mention anti-piracy methods. It probably won't happen for a long time, if ever, its just something I was thinking about.
blue ray just makes its brighter end of thats nothing new about only that it hold more memory then a dvd thats about it. People who say its the best are just ps3 fan boy cock heads
@cypri0t A disc can't tell your TV to be brighter. You need to get a clue. Bluray is far superior to DVD. The evidence is right in front of you. If you can't tell the difference you have horrible vision. At the end of the day, if you think its all the same, stick with DVD.
Ofc in blu ray u see the image more real and its nicer but what ppl have to do now' ? throw all their dvd's to the garbage and buy blu ray that is alot more expensive ? new dvd players? important is to be cheap and to have a good quality .
@Zaranyzerak well i dont know about others but for me 10 euros isnt to throw , if my dvd is worth 40 euros and blu ray is 50 ofc i get the dvd and plus i dont own a blu ray player i cant change my players just for image difference . I got 300 original dvd's what im suposed to do with them ? change them each time something new comes up ?
@WandererHost1 Blu-ray players can also play DVDs. If prices are too high in your local stores, shop online. There are sales everywhere, all the time. There is no reason why you can't enjoy what both formats have to offer. I buy new additions to my collection on Blu-ray, eventually I'll upgrade my favorites. I don't get why so many people think a change in formats means they have to ditch their old collection... And come on, a small premium for HD quality is NOT unreasonable.
@Zaranyzerak lool wow wasnt expecting a reply so fast i rarely go on utube hahah What I said was that I got a very good dvd player that I wont throw to buy another one that can play blu ray disc for 300 euros and watching it in blu ray or other quality wont change my life, whats important is to see good the images on the tv screen .
@Zaranyzerak I would prefer more to see blu ray quality on Tv or online movies , its like ur trying to change my mind when i just made a comment with my opinion , u should close the option for ppl to comment if u wanna argue xD haha
@WandererHost1 The great thing about Blu-Ray is that it not only can play your DVDs, but uses a computer chip to "up convert" them so they still look good on HDTV. I noticed you use the Euro, so I dont know about Europe but in the USA prices for Blu Ray players and most movies except new releases have dropped dramatically. It could be different there, but when the time comes, the upgrade is worth it.
@WandererHost1 As much as I try to adapt to change because it's a great thing, they're not exactly making it any easier. One of the reasons why I'm starting to resort to downloads rather than buying anything else. It sucks, but oh well :-/
blu ray looks better then dvd i buy only blu rays now once in a while i will get a dvd as a gift from someone i do not open it i sell it or give it to someone else and re buy it on blu ray
I hope you all know the real difference is in the fps of movies, and the reason your 1080p tvs are so cheap is because they arent as good as led backlit lcd tvs, or even lcd tvs.
@iBobDaBuildah Film runs at 24fps. Blu-rays sourced form film run at 24fps. You don't NEED higher refresh rates for anything other than 3D, an even then a 120hz TV is more than enough. All higher refresh rates do is make film look more like video, which is pointless and ruins the integrity of the image. So if all you're going to do is watch movies, why not get a cheaper 120 or even 60hz TV? It's more than enough to reproduce the 24fps of the source material accurately.
@iBobDaBuildah Yes, it's smoother because the TV is inserting virtual frames that don't actually exist. It isn't about being "smoother" it's about not compromising the source. 24fps is the correct framerate to view 24fps content. 60fps is the correct framerate to view 60fps content. Forcing the image to be something it isn't doesn't make it "better." Film should not look like video. Cranking the refresh rate to 100x the native framerate does not improve the picture, it makes it a videogame.
@iBobDaBuildah Yes, because it doesn't match the source and forces the image to be something it isn't. It's the same principle as using the zoom function to fill the screen rather than leaving the image in the proper aspect ratio. Whatever the source is, that's how it should be watched. "Fixing" it with the functions of your TV doesn't make it "better." It just makes it wrong.
@iBobDaBuildah Yes. And making the picture faster is another way of ruining it. That's the point. It's not MEANT to be faster. Whatever the source framerate is is how it is meant to be viewed. If it was meant to be viewed at 240fps, it would be filmed at 240fps. Film should not look like video. Blu-ray is the ONLY home video format we've ever had that can accurately reproduce film framerate of 24fps with no conversion, and high refresh rate TVs completely ruin that experience.
@iBobDaBuildah How can you even ask that? The point is obvious - higher quality picture and sound than any other format, and more interactive special features. "Smoother motion" isn't a feature of Blu-ray, that's solely a feature of high refresh rate HDTVs. It's a pointless feature that no one actually NEEDS. The point of Blu-ray is to present quality that is much closer to the quality of the source material, be it film, HD video, whatever. To give you a near theatrical experience in your home.
@thelegendarylord Yes, you get either much higher bitrate sound, losslessly compressed sound, or completely uncompressed sound. The player doesn't really matter in terms of the quality, they're all the same. The main difference you'll notice with cheaper players vs better players is loading time, and how easy they are to upgrade the firmware. I use a PS3 myself, it loads super fast and is very easy to upgrade the firmware.
@Zaranyzerak Oh,I see.I also wanted to say the blu ray may not be used as much in the future esp. for gaming and may be replaced by HVD(holographic versatile disc)and the capacity of these things is around 6 terabytes!!!but then again most people now just buy movies or other things in digital form.
@thelegendarylord I'm aware of HVD. While the specs are impressive at the moment, by the time it's ready solid state media and hard drives will already have capacity far in excess of anything HVD can do at the same price point. I will be very surprised is HVD makes much, if any, impact. That should have come out THIS generation, but given that there's still at least 5 years of development to go for HVD, by the time it's ready other media will have long surpassed it.
@Zaranyzerak I think you're right and by then most humans will use s flash drive with lots of memory to store everything.Movies, games, you name it.Almost everything electronic will be in a digital form.
for the people who still watch dvds: you're wrong.
i bought a laptop with bluray and my first bluray movie.
i wanted to try something old to see a difference. i tryed the lion king and DAMN boys and girls, my mind was blown away.
i couldn't believe i never bought bluray earlier. i have never watched the lion king this way before!i find blurays to have more vibrant colors, better shadows, and overall better quality. even when viewing on a 32" lcd 720p tv, it still looks great.
the real reason i get blu ray is because lighting and color really comes through. my friend has scott pilgrim on blu ray and i never appreciated how excellent the lighting is in that film. I also just watched Alien on blu ray and the lighting and practical effects look so much cooler when you can really see every little detail they put into it.
@KashgroundTM Very true! Plus I often find deals on Blu-rays and rarely pay more than 5-10 dollars per movie. Quite a change from the days of VHS where a single movie would cost 30-40 dollars. Or even DVD, where new releases are STILL close to 30 dollars, with the Blu-rays only being a buck or two more in most cases. I often wonder where people who complain that it's "too expensive" are getting the basis for their comparison...
I hope that Lawrence of Arabia will look stunning on Blu ray. It's made to be seen on a big screen in beautiful high definition.

What is really a trip is seeing movies at native 24 hz and how fricken smooth it is compared to the jerky and judder people accept 60hz multiplier frame rates.
Paperclown 1 month ago
@Paperclown Absolutely! Or even worse people who LIKE using even higher refresh rates like 120 and 240hz for watching movies, loading it up with motion compensation and the like...film isn't supposed to look like VIDEO, folks!

Does quality vary between different blu ray players?
theriser17 1 month ago
@theriser17 No. It's all digital, so it looks the same no matter what player you're using. The only differences you might encounter are the cheaper players tend to load slower, and may not be as easy to keep the firmware up to date.

How did you manage to make the 1926 movie into a blu-ray showing of the original anyway? Or did you just find a blu-ray copy of that movie.
XRioteerXBoyX 1 month ago
@XRioteerXBoyX You can take uncompressed screenshots of anything if you have a BLu-ray drive for your computer. I got these pictures from a home video forum that does this kind of thing all the time.
Zaranyzerak 1 month ago
So what's the difference between blu-ray and double layer then? In terms of film quality ofcourse.
XRioteerXBoyX 1 month ago

Thanks for your great commentary & opinions.

I'm wondering something: how can they make something look sharper and cleaner than it was at the origin? I mean, this movie made in the 20's, it was on a film and the quality couldn't be better because the camera didn't allow them to have a better quality than that. So how can they make an image look so much better than it really was?
lilo621 1 month ago
@lilo621 Because they didn't. That IS how good it really was. They went back to the original negatives and made a new, pristine transfer from those elements. I think you seriously underestimate just how high resolution film actually is. 1080p isn't even close.

I just stick with dvd. Id rather buy more dvd movies then buy blue rays for better picture but not have as many movies.
emocody1324 2 months ago
@emocody1324 I often get Blu-rays for the same price as the DVD version, so I always opt for the Blu-ray. While I may not watch SOME movies as often as others, i'd rather have the better quality for when I do. You just have to know how to shop.
Zaranyzerak 2 months ago
@Zaranyzerak I do check ebay and amazon or see if any stores are having sells. Im going to buy avatar on blu ray because its on blu ray on ebay for a dollar or 2 more. im willing to pay that. If i can get the blu ray for a few dollars more or the same price as dvd then definitely. it would be dumb to buy the lesser quality dvd when i can get the superior for about the same. but when i have to pay over 5 dollars i get dvd unless its a movie i really love. im cheap lol.

WiggyPlease18 2 months ago
@WiggyPlease18 No, it is how the DVD version looks vs how the Blu-ray version looks. No matter what player you put a DVD into, it will still only be DVD quality. Mos tplayers will "upconvert" the image so it looks a bit more bearable on a HDTV, but it's still only DVD quality (which is 6X lower resolution than Blu-ray). And yes, Blu-ray players can also plays DVDs. So you can easily enjoy content from both formats on one machine.
Zaranyzerak 2 months ago
blueray will replace dvd if you look at films, but it wont replace it for 100%, remember there are still cd`s around, blue ray wll not be replace at the computr that quick, and with in 10-15years the blue ray will be replaced by hvd anyway.
rubikfan1 2 months ago
@rubikfan1 HVD isn't going to happen, sorry. In 10-15 years other storage mediums will have far surpassed what it can do, for a far lower price. If it was going to have any impact, it should have been THIS generation. They missed the boat. I can't actually believe they're even still bothering with it at this point, such a waste of time.

blu ray is not the future. downloadable and streamable videos are. dont invest in these guys.
toSTONEiGO 2 months ago
@toSTONEiGO Wrong. Physical media will continue to co-exist alongside downloadable formats, just as it always has. Did mp3 kill CD? No. Physical media will continue to exist indefinitely, for those who prefer the superior quality, and actually want something physical they can hold in their hands, display on their shelf and collect. There is plenty of demand for both. The only thing that is changing is the retail environment, moving more to online sales than brick and mortar stores.
Zaranyzerak 2 months ago 13
@Zaranyzerak I agree. I'll always prefer Physical Media over Downloadable Formats. I know people who prefer to buy Music and Movies online, and they say that the quality is just as good as a CD, DVD, or Blu-Ray. I don't believe it though.
Riddler95 2 months ago
@Zaranyzerak I agree with you, all these people who thing physical media will be gone, they are so dead wrong, Blu Ray is here to stay
xfilesmanson 2 months ago
@Zaranyzerak I think "physical" media is going to change. People like to have a physical product sitting on their shelf, but it is more profitable for companies to digitally distribute media. In my opinion, there will eventually be physical items you buy that contain codes for a digital download. That way you get the case to show off, and the company saves on pressing discs.
sjuggalo 2 months ago
@sjuggalo That's a possibility, but at this point in time the actual quality you get from a downloadable version isn't anywhere near what you get with an actual Blu-ray. For digital downloads to reach that same level, we need higher bandwidth and faster connections for it to be viable. Maybe once fiber optic networks become more widespread. Until then, downloads won't even be close in quality. Unless you download an uncompressed 25-50 gig file, of course...
Zaranyzerak 2 months ago
@Zaranyzerak Very true. Also, people like menus, extras, etc., so publishers would have to figure out how to deliver that in a downloadable, easily accessible way. Not to mention anti-piracy methods. It probably won't happen for a long time, if ever, its just something I was thinking about.

Ofc in blu ray u see the image more real and its nicer but what ppl have to do now' ? throw all their dvd's to the garbage and buy blu ray that is alot more expensive ? new dvd players? important is to be cheap and to have a good quality .
WandererHost1 2 months ago
@WandererHost1 I rarely pay more than 5-10 dollars for a new Blu-ray. It hasn't been "way more expensive" for a couple of years now.
Zaranyzerak 2 months ago 2
@Zaranyzerak well i dont know about others but for me 10 euros isnt to throw , if my dvd is worth 40 euros and blu ray is 50 ofc i get the dvd and plus i dont own a blu ray player i cant change my players just for image difference . I got 300 original dvd's what im suposed to do with them ? change them each time something new comes up ?
WandererHost1 2 months ago
@WandererHost1 Blu-ray players can also play DVDs. If prices are too high in your local stores, shop online. There are sales everywhere, all the time. There is no reason why you can't enjoy what both formats have to offer. I buy new additions to my collection on Blu-ray, eventually I'll upgrade my favorites. I don't get why so many people think a change in formats means they have to ditch their old collection... And come on, a small premium for HD quality is NOT unreasonable.
Zaranyzerak 2 months ago
@Zaranyzerak lool wow wasnt expecting a reply so fast i rarely go on utube hahah What I said was that I got a very good dvd player that I wont throw to buy another one that can play blu ray disc for 300 euros and watching it in blu ray or other quality wont change my life, whats important is to see good the images on the tv screen .
WandererHost1 2 months ago
@Zaranyzerak I would prefer more to see blu ray quality on Tv or online movies , its like ur trying to change my mind when i just made a comment with my opinion , u should close the option for ppl to comment if u wanna argue xD haha
WandererHost1 2 months ago
@WandererHost1 The great thing about Blu-Ray is that it not only can play your DVDs, but uses a computer chip to "up convert" them so they still look good on HDTV. I noticed you use the Euro, so I dont know about Europe but in the USA prices for Blu Ray players and most movies except new releases have dropped dramatically. It could be different there, but when the time comes, the upgrade is worth it.

I hope you all know the real difference is in the fps of movies, and the reason your 1080p tvs are so cheap is because they arent as good as led backlit lcd tvs, or even lcd tvs.
iBobDaBuildah 3 months ago
@iBobDaBuildah Film runs at 24fps. Blu-rays sourced form film run at 24fps. You don't NEED higher refresh rates for anything other than 3D, an even then a 120hz TV is more than enough. All higher refresh rates do is make film look more like video, which is pointless and ruins the integrity of the image. So if all you're going to do is watch movies, why not get a cheaper 120 or even 60hz TV? It's more than enough to reproduce the 24fps of the source material accurately.
Zaranyzerak 3 months ago
@Zaranyzerak its still smoother from what my eye sees
iBobDaBuildah 3 months ago
@iBobDaBuildah Yes, it's smoother because the TV is inserting virtual frames that don't actually exist. It isn't about being "smoother" it's about not compromising the source. 24fps is the correct framerate to view 24fps content. 60fps is the correct framerate to view 60fps content. Forcing the image to be something it isn't doesn't make it "better." Film should not look like video. Cranking the refresh rate to 100x the native framerate does not improve the picture, it makes it a videogame.
Zaranyzerak 3 months ago
@Zaranyzerak so you are saying smoother isnt better.
iBobDaBuildah 3 months ago
@iBobDaBuildah Yes, because it doesn't match the source and forces the image to be something it isn't. It's the same principle as using the zoom function to fill the screen rather than leaving the image in the proper aspect ratio. Whatever the source is, that's how it should be watched. "Fixing" it with the functions of your TV doesn't make it "better." It just makes it wrong.
Zaranyzerak 3 months ago
@Zaranyzerak Using the zoom function ruins the picture, this makes the picture faster.
iBobDaBuildah 3 months ago
@iBobDaBuildah Yes. And making the picture faster is another way of ruining it. That's the point. It's not MEANT to be faster. Whatever the source framerate is is how it is meant to be viewed. If it was meant to be viewed at 240fps, it would be filmed at 240fps. Film should not look like video. Blu-ray is the ONLY home video format we've ever had that can accurately reproduce film framerate of 24fps with no conversion, and high refresh rate TVs completely ruin that experience.
Zaranyzerak 3 months ago
@Zaranyzerak then whats the point of blu ray.
iBobDaBuildah 3 months ago
@iBobDaBuildah How can you even ask that? The point is obvious - higher quality picture and sound than any other format, and more interactive special features. "Smoother motion" isn't a feature of Blu-ray, that's solely a feature of high refresh rate HDTVs. It's a pointless feature that no one actually NEEDS. The point of Blu-ray is to present quality that is much closer to the quality of the source material, be it film, HD video, whatever. To give you a near theatrical experience in your home.
Zaranyzerak 3 months ago
@Zaranyzerak Does blu ray also improve sound quality and does that blu ray player matter in any way?
thelegendarylord 2 months ago
@thelegendarylord Yes, you get either much higher bitrate sound, losslessly compressed sound, or completely uncompressed sound. The player doesn't really matter in terms of the quality, they're all the same. The main difference you'll notice with cheaper players vs better players is loading time, and how easy they are to upgrade the firmware. I use a PS3 myself, it loads super fast and is very easy to upgrade the firmware.
Zaranyzerak 2 months ago
@Zaranyzerak Oh,I see.I also wanted to say the blu ray may not be used as much in the future esp. for gaming and may be replaced by HVD(holographic versatile disc)and the capacity of these things is around 6 terabytes!!!but then again most people now just buy movies or other things in digital form.
thelegendarylord 2 months ago
@thelegendarylord I'm aware of HVD. While the specs are impressive at the moment, by the time it's ready solid state media and hard drives will already have capacity far in excess of anything HVD can do at the same price point. I will be very surprised is HVD makes much, if any, impact. That should have come out THIS generation, but given that there's still at least 5 years of development to go for HVD, by the time it's ready other media will have long surpassed it.
Zaranyzerak 2 months ago
@Zaranyzerak I think you're right and by then most humans will use s flash drive with lots of memory to store everything.Movies, games, you name it.Almost everything electronic will be in a digital form.
