They definitely rock this cover version of the Terry Reid song. And I really dig their first album. This band is multi-talented and definitely deserve to be in the Rock & Roll hall of fame. If you just listen to their body of work from the first album on they really put out some great material and are worthy for induction.
First saw them in the spring of 77 opening for The Runaways (some band that I thought was a piece of shit called Tom Petty and the LA Heartbreakers was third bill). It was a life changing moment!!!
I flew from Alaska to see Trick with Kiss in Vancouver B.C-October 77.This footage is from around that same time. There first album blew me out of the water.
Yeah, Cheap Trick is a great live band, this is probably my favorite song by them - even though it's a cover. Great performance, love the one on "At Budokan" DVD also!
I agree and disagree. Terry would have had a much better solo career were it not for his most unhelpful producer, Mickie Most. So - signing that exclusive contract with MM was the bad move. But Terry was only 18 and nudged by Graham Nash...
Interestingly the albums Terry Reid recorded with Mickie Most producing are his best and most memorable works...so it's doubtful whether he would have had a "better" solo career..
Ever heard Seed Of Memory? Or River?... thought so. Oh, and BTW it was MM who shelved some of the best songs - Penny and Summer Sequence are just two examples. Terry did fine work DESPITE MM - not thanks to him. His lack of understanding and interest in Terry was abundantly obvious as the original production was atrocious. Even digital remastering can't rescue the sound 100%.
I have 'em and they are not nearly as good as the Mickie Most produced albums. Why do other artists always pick these 2 to cover songs from. ?CheapTrick, CSN,and The Raconteurs.. Becasuse they are the BEST SONGS.. I have not heard any covers of songs from The River or Seed Of Memory or any other Terry Reid release. BTW Mickie Most also produced 2 of the most influential rock albums ever Truth & Beck-Ola by the Jeff Beck Group..Great production values on bothe ever heard of them ? Probably not
Yup. I didn't know it for about a year after I had the 1st album. I have the Terry Reid record with the original, and it's very good, but I do prefer Cheap Trick's version. Very rare that I like a cover better than an original.
you sound like ur pretty up with these guys. Have you noticed the difference in the Budokan videos and the BUdokan record some songs sound totally different with riffs and chords changed and dialaugue before and after songs is changed and added
Oh yeah. Like every other big 70's live album, it's nice and overdubbed. I swear there are 3 guitar parts in places on the record. I actually dig them better live and raw. I have a soundboard boot from '79 that I listen to more than Budokan. One of the greatest bands of the 70's, and the 1st album is my favorite.
Cheap Trick soundboard boots rule!! I got a whole slew of them from the late 70's and early 80's...they rock. I as well listened to them more than the proper records.
Wicked. Saw this tour with Kiss in Vancouver. Either the loudest thing I've ever heard or they destroyed my ears and nothing was ever louder. Bought the first album - they never bettered it in my opinion. Great live band.
I hope he kept that bass as a collection in his house.
I've always loved this song. I remember it was the first song I heard on my brother's 8-track from Cheap Trick's 1st albumn. Then I heard Mandecello and I was blown away.
Thanks for the video. Nice to know that people videotaped them in concert before they made it big over in Japan.
I seen this show at the Winnipeg Arena on Sept 1976. They were back up for KISS Love Gun Tour a F'n WICKED show.I liked CHEAP TRICK's set better!!!! Like Trickey said They are rock n roll!!!!
Wow, I love it. Where do you get these older clips? I've searched and searched in the past for older CT songs played live to no avail. I'm glad somebody finally posted some! Thanks.
You guys rock for puttin up all this stuff!I got it back then and still do...as well as CT themselves still get it.its funny but 'few' in CTs case means millions world wide.
wow - they were just SO good. so RAW. so FUNNY. so EDGY. and Robin is so gifted. It seems so few of us actually GOT IT back then. And a lot of us still follow BECAUSE we got it THEN and hang in there NOW for the new songs that tip the scale.
Thanks for this post danny. You're an amazing guy and post alot of trick videos, that me being a 16 year old life long CT fan would never get to see. Thank you soo much. This is trick in their prime. I have but one thing to request of you though. Could you put the video back up from this concert of Stiff Competition? Please? Thank you.
I agree with you about this song. But the other version from Japan (1992)is, from my point of view, better. Once again, the proof that Cheap Trick stay great despite years.
Thanks for posting this.

This is a stunning cover of a great tune! The original doesn't even approximate the fury that Cheap Trick brought it. Awesome.

Amazing song, killer performance. Along with his shredding, Rick just pulls you right in with his on stage antics. Good stuff.

Terry turned down Jimmy Page, an offer to be in his new group....with John Paul Jones. Bad move. Great singer.

can u explain what uverdubbed means?
CheapTrick94 3 years ago
Overdubbing is basically adding additional tracks (back-up vocals, keyboards, extra guitars etc..) to the basic tracks.
