I know that the verse is racist, but when the song was written it wasn't seen that way. We can't rewrite history. An old friend had a very old recording of Old Man River sung by Al Jolson.He sang it in the early part of the 20th century and it includes a racist word that I won't type because some idiot would think I'm dissing them. As a piece of history that version just reflects the attitudes then.

Great song. I listened to it as a child. The argument presented in these comments as there being some kind of slam on the indigenous people of Australia is taken way out of proportion. I am of Irish descent and am a "Mc". I am proud of that. I find strength in that fact. What next, am I not allowed to call McDonalds Restaurant "Mickey D's"? I know that the verse is racist, but when the song was written it wasn't seen that way. We can't rewrite history. An old friend had a very old recording of Old Man River sung by Al Jolson.He sang it in the early part of the 20th century and it includes a racist word that I won't type because some idiot would think I'm dissing them. As a piece of history that version just reflects the attitudes then.

plus how is setting someone in bondage free construed to be negative. he say's "set me abbo's free". Maybe it's not the PC term for the aboriginal peoples of Australia, but it certainly isn't a racist sentiment that he expresses. Still I have to wonder if the have that whole "but they call each other that all the time" thing down under. Or what would 2pac sound like if he had been Australian.

I guess too many people believe in political correctness. I take my cue from one of my coworkers. He's a little younger than me so he grew up with black and white too. So that's how we refer to other people and don't mean any disrespect.

He doesn't say "set me abbos free". He says "let me abbos go loose". (a) abbos = n*ggers in Australian parlance, (b) letting them go loose alludes to the fact that they were seen more as possessions than employees on outback stations (ranches). Anyway, the problem is (a), which is why the whole verse was officially removed a long time ago. Someone coming here might want to hear the song in its present popular form and stumbling across this relic might get the wrong impression of poor old Rolf.
