would this work for a sterling silver hand mirror i have ? I don't think it would do anything to the mirror itself. It's a Towle Old master... i would think that it would work fine. Those cleaning solutions do absolutely nothing for the oxidation.
my chem teacher is a nazi and she didn't believe us that this involved an electrochemical reaction. YOU SAVED MY BUTTTTTTT!!! :) thank you very much for explaining this.
amazing! does it work on carbon steel? I have a knife that's have rusting spots on it... I try to sand it with a steel wool but there's only so much metal i want to take off... do you have a solution?
Here are comments why you SHOULD NOT use this method from the SOCIETY OF AMERICAN SILVERSMITHS:"Pitting of the object can occur if the aluminum plate is not periodically cleaned. Another not-so-obvious problem is scratching of the object when in contact with the plate...The solution can also seep into hollow areas such as coffeepot handles,...weighted pieces with minute holes, & any porous attachments. FOR THESE REASONS, THIS CLEANING TECHNIQUE IS NOT RECOMMENDED."
Here are further comments why you SHOULD NOT use this method from the SOCIETY OF AMERICAN SILVERSMITHS: "...(Using an alum alloy plate & warm sodium carbonate) removes only light tarnish, not the thick, black tarnish produced by years of neglect...Objects cleaned by this method may tarnish more quickly than silver that has been polished, for the object's surface will act like a sponge & more readily absorb tarnish-producing gases & moisture." TTUchem, you're doing so much harm to antique silver
thanks for sharing !! awesome idea

Yeah, NEVER put an electric hair dryer in water if there is tinfoil and baking soda in it.

My mom clean jewelry with cocomilk.
She leave all of it overnight in a bath. Then she polish it with a soft clothy.

is it possible to get sulfur from that stuff?
antiswattt2 2 years ago
@antiswattt2
You would probably need thousands of eggs and some more chemical knowledge to make sulfur. Probably a very expensive way to do it.

Please don't do this with fine old silver. There are no shortcuts to doing it right. You will eat away the handchased and brightcut detail.

If you take a close Look at the Scale, you will see that there is no Loss in this Reaction in Silver.

so you just need a boiled egg break it a little but in in a beg and place your silver in it ???
