I've done this, and my personal opinion is the needle method is for the birds. All you really need is a scalpel and do it the surgical way. Another issue is the membrane is very thick. Before I did this I had an idea is was a "membrane" and so thin but really it is as thick as your thumbnail so you really need to cut deep. Another issue, finding the membrane is more a procedure of FEEL than looking at it.
i prefer the surgical cric. save the needle for chest decompression.
