Steve Balsamo is a great actor and his voice is beautiful, but he doesn't have a ROCK voice. Now it doesn't really MATTER cause he CAN sing it, he just sings it more legit than rock. I think that's the reason I like Ted Neeley's voice for this role. He's got this raspy quality that just MAKES those high notes. Steve hits them well and he's passionate, it's just different. Not better or worse, just different. He's definitely a better actor than most who have taken on the role.
@SlappaDeBassMon I like the version of Ted Neeley more like Steves, too, but I also think that the original version of Ian Gillan is far on top of any others...he just has the strongest voice in my opinion and he also is capable of showing the anger to god as well as his own desparation...
Many years (hmm) ago I heard Glen Carter in Glasgow and he was fantastic but Steve Balsamo is amazing. This is my favourite (like many others I know) from the musical - still bring hairs standing out on the back of my neck. Better live though instead of all these recordings.....................!!!
I also like Ted Neelys version, because it was a different interpretation, of anger at God for sacrificing him to acheive Gods work. And i can understand why people find neelys unpleasant to listen to, but i like metal music lol so slightly agressive vocals aren't an issue for me.
I think Glenn Carter and Steve Balsamo interpreted this song roughly the same, trying to portray the sadness of human sacrifice. But i found Carters version far to soppy and over the top, and his voice is not as powerful as Steves. Steve has pulled it off so much better. Live, his acting is so much more convincing and the emotion is much more realsitic and you can see him get caught up in the spirit of the song.
This is impressive and is even better wen he sings it live!! For me ted is the best but this guy is a close second. Though I think the part that is normally instrumental should not have that long note over it (even though it's really really impressive). To me that musical interlude and then Jesus coming back in but more quiet and more thoughtful is really powerful. But that's my opinion. Check my version, type leon Tagoe and you should see it.
i like this one and Glenn Carters one. i love Jesus Christ Superstar. its my favourite musical EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its a masterpiece. These are some of the best songs in the world
@nileylove61551 I totally agree with you. I never cared for Ted Neeley whose voice was very screechy and unpleasant to listen to. Balsamo and Carter are the best performers I've heard as Jesus. Truly one of the best shows ever written; every song is brilliant.
I'm negotiable actually.. I think at the time, Ian was the man for the job, but the performance itself isn't so good. I always thought he would've benefited from having done it a few more times.
Ted's version on the other hand ... blows me out every time I hear it.
Can someone give me mp3 files of this amazing cast album with Steve Balsamo as JC? I'd love to have one in time for Holy Week! I think he astounds me so much that I feel he is JCS personified! Amazing voice!!! Flabbergasting performance!
Another great song from Balsamo. I've heard him sing this so many different ways, this is different to Ahoy Holland version, that was more theatrical, this is more rocky i love this so much. Steve Balsamo is so versatile, he can adapt his style, a true sign of a great professional, his live version in Hyde Park was amazing as well. We have a great talent in our midst, enjoy.
This is the best version of this song IMHO. I heard many on youtube and but what does it for me is the long falsetto part towards the end. What a crazy voice he has! I have a copy of this and was going to post but have been beaten to it hehe.
Simply, the best version ever!

This man's voice cannot be harnessed by a mere microphone in a studio.

It's beautiful and professional. But for me Ted Neeley is the Nr1. His version is cooler, more powerful and even so more emotional.
