@seligsuper re your suggestion to check out Strapping Young Lad (bearing in mind that I do actually like heavy metal, lol) - they moved me to poetry, thus: " I checked it out, it hurt my ears, my poor ears were reduced to tears. They ached down to their very bones, and said - "go back to Trevor Jones - his music suits us finer ears - SLY are the worst we've heard for years!" "
If you're listening to this and enjoy heavy metal music, check out the song "Skeksis" by Strapping Young Lad. Obviously heavily influenced by this song.
I just think puppets and stop motion age so much better then CGI, which always ends up looking outdated and crap in a few years. Sure there are some great CGI movies (like Finding Nemo and The Incredibles), but it's extremely rare to find one with heart and charm.
When I first saw this movie, I could not belive it was made by Jim Henson. I could not belive it was from the same guy who did Sesame Street, The Mupet Show, and Fragle Rock. This movie showed that Jim had a darker side to him. The movie scared the living crap out of me when I was young, but I think it is amazing now! Thank you Jim Henson. :*)

All music of this splendor should be dedicated and attributed to none other than the almighty creator of heaven and earth; Jesus Christ, to musically describe his glory and everlasting love
I play runescape to this soundtrack haha, still remember watching this when I was 5 or 6, what a dreamy movie, at 5 or 6 it toils with your imagination ^.^
Aw I didn't expect to find the theme to one of my most favorite fantasy flicks on the 80s that brings me back to those days of my childhood. I'll never forget. The Dark Crystal is one of my favorites along with The Princess Bride, The Never ending Story, Return to Oz, and Labyrinth. That's how good movies should be.
This was my favorite movie as a kid since i was 3 and i grew up in the 80's/early 90's as a kid with those as well. There was also Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (aka Warriors of the Wind), Conan, Black Cauldron, Roger Rabbit, Heavy Metal, Fire and Ice etc. that i adored as a kid back in the 80's and early 90's. The genre was nearly dead in the 90's but thanks to those modern fantasy movies i mentioned of today it's back, have you seen Thor? excellent retro style fantasy.
Aw all those movies you mentioned bring back memories of when I first laid eyes on them. Still glad that I was born and raised in the 80s/90s instead of todays' generation. I haven't seen Thor yet, but I will this Friday and find out what I think.
Awesome score to one of my favorite movies for a long time and been a Sci-fi/fantasy fan since. Anyone seen Thor? now that an awesome epic fantasy movie and quite a great take on both the legend and Marvel character. it was also a throwback to 80's fantasy epics like Willow, this, Conan, Heavy Metal, Ladyhawke, Clash of the Titans, Excalibur and BeastMaster.
Indeed but we have a fantasy movie comeback thanks to Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Narnia, Avatar, Beowulf, Stardust, Pan's Labyrinth to now Thor.
@Johnlindsey289 yeah but mainly im talking about fantasy movies that are completely original like pans labyrinth for an example(avatar isnt really original because its based off of pocahontas)
Cameron did borrowed from world history since he researched many movies. He also borrowed from Willow, Last of the Mohicans, Heavy Metal, Fantastic Planet, LightYears (Gandahar), Star Wars Trilogy, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (aka Warriors of the Wind), Dune, Princess Mononoke, Star Trek 6 The Undiscovered Country, Enemy Mine and Castle in The Sky. Did Avatar also reminded you of those things?
this is what i would call cinematic gold that i will be making sure my child see's when i have one, it and the neverending were and always will be my movies, and the second neverending story was semi good as well i especially loved the silver city song, lol
@frdo66 Well, to be honest, CGI isn't completely bad, but I feel that i can only be used when it's perfect. Jurassic Park as an example. Yes, I'm aware that they also used animatronics, but I think that's what made it work. It wasn't totally CGI.
I think the reason some people hate it so much is that it rarely IS perfect. Just a theory.
@FlyingFocs That is so true. CGI can be absolutely stunning when it's done extremely well. But if it has a low budget behind it or just not enough effort put into them....then it's really an eyesore to look at.
I had the pleasure of working on Dark Crystal at Elstree and loved every (long) day.
It's a shame - in my opinion - that the skeksis voices were difficult for some and the story a little bland, as this should have been right up there with Star Wars & Indiana Jones (also made at Elstree) as a classic movie
@Tactual yes that's true! but my cousin's generation ignore how true is Fern Gully moral and prefer the new Disney. I also try to make him watch Pocahantas and what did answer? "It's exactly Avatar story."
James cameron is a fan of this movie and calls it a work of art. Do you think Avatar deserves it's success? it is from the man who made Aliens, Terminator 1 & 2 and True Lies and The Abyss. He's probably one of the best directors ever.
@Johnlindsey289 All those other films you mentioned are good except Avatar which is propably the most overrated movie in the history of mankind. Plot is a rip off from many different films and it is mostly based on special effects which have ruined film industry. Avatar is not even near to Star Wars in my opinion.
Do you think Avatar is near as good as Cameron's other movies or is it his worst film? why do you think it's the highest grossing movie ever? do you think it's the biggest cinematic fraud of all time?
@musashi7272 Why even compare that 21st Century shit (Avatar) with Jim Henson's greatest masterpiece, we all know that the good movies were made in the 80's!! In my personal view, fantasy and sci-fi was much better in the 80's. Is there anyone who disagree?!
@musashi7272 Twilight isn't a vampire movie and no I have not watched it and I'll never do, so what do I care what does fans thinks about it? It's my own subjective opinion.
I love each decade of movies because they all have a certain theme to them. I love 80s sci-fi and fantasy for being more experimental and rebellious than usual. What I like the most about the 2000s is all of the different interpretations of the end. Wall-E & Children of Men has become one of my favorites. While Avatar is very visually appealing, the overall story has been done so many times that it has become pretty stale.
So magic...that music is so magic...I think that 80's movies soundtracks are better than those of nowadays I don't really know why...Conan the Barbarian, The Beastmaster, Dark Crystal...all those movies had magnifiscent soundtracks
@chukunezu82 I love it as an adult. Wonderful, magical film... Jim Henson was a wonderful, gentle-man. This film alone won him Heaven, his other work with the Muppetts were just add ons to someone who never stopped dreaming and shared his dreams with others.

@emilygracey I must say that CGI also takes alot of hard work and intelligence, have you tried making 3d effects? But I agree that films should be with as much live action as possible. 3d just doesn't work as well.
@emilygracey because hollywood is making cheaper products. You can see it in the acting and overuse of CGI. hollywood doesnt want to hire the real quailty special effects people so it goes to CGI studios. One day, hollywood will make high quality films agian. but for now uits jsut a CGI festival.
Of course they have, my ranting conspiracy theorist about the reptilians and how they are hinted at via this movie, have most likely sparked a dark crystal within all of Henson's brethren ;)
@Emperorofthedaleks LOL yeah the skesis where awesome and terribly evil at the same time.....mmmmmmhhhmmmmmmmhhhmmmm.....I <3 Chamberlains mhmmmm!!! XD GELFLINGS RULE.!!!
thanks ya know they just don't make fantasy movies like they use to, I only state it in the fantasy because it's not really in the sci-fi category like avatar or anything to that nature. when it comes to fantasy though neverending story and dark crystal were my movies, i think i heard that there are supposed to be a possible sequel to the dark crystal a neverending story remake although they don't want to call it that.
@startwl5 well they don't make movies like this anymore cuz hollywood doesn't have visionary directors like jim henson anymore.most of the new directors now come from music videos and the majority of them couldn't come up with an original idea to save their lives.that's why you get all these remakes these days.
so true although i'm fine with a good remake as long as it's good although I haven't really seen many remakes I like, although I did like that Halloween 1 remake, although it didn't have the suspense the original one had, i did like how more details of the past were explained before reverting to present day since the original one didn't actually show or tell you the one under the mask was myers, matter of fact in the credits micheal myers was know as 'The Figure' i think.
This is one of the most amazing and beautiful soundtracks ever written. It gives me the goose bumps just to think about it. If there is a heaven you can find it in the score of the Dark Crystal. Amazing.
This is just like beter then Avatar... Because Avatar has too much action and things are just pretty Modern time (Except for the Avatars)... The Dark Crystal has imagination and unique stuff you wouldnt imagine and the music is really great in The Dark Crystal.. Because it has more Mystery to it :) MY opinion guys ....
@MelRules911 Dark Crystal is an amazing movie of course, and maybe avatar had to much action, but it was the underlying messge in that story. it was a stoiry about how people (mainly white people) take away other's powers. They have no right, whatsoever to do so, but, with military force and manipulation, they will do so. Look what they did to the tree and all the natives! Killed! Same thing has happened all over the world, gold,silver,copper,paper...is all worth more than a life.
@MelRules911 But, it is completely unrelated to Avatar. My point was not to call avatar a better movie, but just to say it was different. THE DARK CRYSTAL IS A CLASSIC! ; )
@CaptMARNEY dude, you're sooooo right! This film was, is and forever will be amazing, the score, the puppetry, the sets. It's like part of fantasy film history maaan!! Thanks for uploading this beautiful, dramatic piece of soundtrack loveliness NorskTorsk
are you kidding! LOTR score is for Shit! its one of MANY examples of a great film with NO musical soul! DC is a LOT closer to the top than LOTR! like so many people I think you confuse a great movie as having a great score, this is where Elfman fails also. does anyone hum LOTR?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@wimmzey I hum Lord of the Rings all the time. Howard Shore is a genius just as Trevor Jones. Too say that LOTR has no "musical soul" is a pretty big statement. Howard Shore just has a very different style from Jones. Same goes for Danny Elfman. They are all equally great composers.
I am a Labryrinth lover, but I have to say (of course, my opinion) that the Dark Crystal is worlds better. It is truly without comparison. Every single scene is so stunning, so deep and simple, it's not a surprise that it took them five years to make it.
XD Avatar doesn't know who it's competing against.
Err... I wouldn't go quite that far. It wasn't bad, and it wasn't anywhere near a waste of life. It just wasn't the most terrific thing ever made, either.
@conni60640 Agreed Labyrinth is an awesome movie, too, but its universe could have used more cohesion ; in comparison, The Dark Crystal is much more developped and complex ; it is probably also more serious than Labyrinth, that had more comedic moments.
@conni60640 its a great movie. its part of my childhood. i always watch this movie and the neverending story when i want to reminicse my childhood innocence. it's such a great movie. and thats what most movies today lack, fantasy and wonder.
Beautiful and Epic this is another element that made the dark crystal one of the greatest fantasy films of all time. I would put this on the list of greatest musical scores consider it a number 2 spot next to the lord of the rings.
Though I would say that this one is more of a spiritual fairytale about a quest of an elflike creature to unite his world again that was once split in pure good and pure evil. While the Labyrinth is more contemporary I think.
And the dark crystal has no humans in it, theyre all hidden underneath and inside the puppets ;-)
This is one of my favorites since all time since I watched it in the theatre when I was 8. Take a chance! why not :-)
I adore this film. I have it on DVD and used to watch it all the time as a kid. Such a great story, and so under appreciated. Awesome music. Thanks for the post!
It is similar to Labyrinth in that it has lots of cool puppets and creepy monsters + in both movies the main character has to go on a journey to find something. I loved Labyrinth and I love the Dark Crystal so I would highly recommend them to anyone who hasn't seen them.
I want this entire soundtrack. Tevor Jones always does such lush music and this ranks as one of his best compositions. I remember the movie, I really liked the Skeksis and thought the Gelflings were annoying, I think it's because I was a little boy and really into "monsters". It's funny because as an adult, I'm still fond of the Skeksis.
RIP Power of the Dark Crystal-Dark Crystal 2

the dark cyrstal and the neverending story are true my all time favorite movies from when i was younger!

@startwl5 agree!! :D
MelRules911 1 year ago
thanks ya know they just don't make fantasy movies like they use to, I only state it in the fantasy because it's not really in the sci-fi category like avatar or anything to that nature. when it comes to fantasy though neverending story and dark crystal were my movies, i think i heard that there are supposed to be a possible sequel to the dark crystal a neverending story remake although they don't want to call it that.
startwl5 1 year ago
@startwl5 well they don't make movies like this anymore cuz hollywood doesn't have visionary directors like jim henson anymore.most of the new directors now come from music videos and the majority of them couldn't come up with an original idea to save their lives.that's why you get all these remakes these days.
GRIMREAPER1871 1 year ago
so true although i'm fine with a good remake as long as it's good although I haven't really seen many remakes I like, although I did like that Halloween 1 remake, although it didn't have the suspense the original one had, i did like how more details of the past were explained before reverting to present day since the original one didn't actually show or tell you the one under the mask was myers, matter of fact in the credits micheal myers was know as 'The Figure' i think.

MelRules911 1 year ago 8
@MelRules911 Dark Crystal is an amazing movie of course, and maybe avatar had to much action, but it was the underlying messge in that story. it was a stoiry about how people (mainly white people) take away other's powers. They have no right, whatsoever to do so, but, with military force and manipulation, they will do so. Look what they did to the tree and all the natives! Killed! Same thing has happened all over the world, gold,silver,copper,paper...is all worth more than a life.
SIRKELAVSVART 1 year ago
@MelRules911 But, it is completely unrelated to Avatar. My point was not to call avatar a better movie, but just to say it was different. THE DARK CRYSTAL IS A CLASSIC! ; )

What I loved about this film was that it was such a departure from Jim Henson's earlier work, yet still carried his distinct style :)

Oh my GAWD, I can't believe this movie was so underappreciated when it first came out in theaters. People were fuckin SPOILED by Henson.

are you kidding! LOTR score is for Shit! its one of MANY examples of a great film with NO musical soul! DC is a LOT closer to the top than LOTR! like so many people I think you confuse a great movie as having a great score, this is where Elfman fails also. does anyone hum LOTR?
wimmzey 2 years ago

@wimmzey I hum Lord of the Rings all the time. Howard Shore is a genius just as Trevor Jones. Too say that LOTR has no "musical soul" is a pretty big statement. Howard Shore just has a very different style from Jones. Same goes for Danny Elfman. They are all equally great composers.

I am a Labryrinth lover, but I have to say (of course, my opinion) that the Dark Crystal is worlds better. It is truly without comparison. Every single scene is so stunning, so deep and simple, it's not a surprise that it took them five years to make it.
XD Avatar doesn't know who it's competing against.
conni60640 2 years ago 79
@conni60640 yeah. f*** Avatar... stupid film.
nomattsland 2 years ago 4
Err... I wouldn't go quite that far. It wasn't bad, and it wasn't anywhere near a waste of life. It just wasn't the most terrific thing ever made, either.

Whoa whoa whoa, there, dude.
Avatar was a good film, I gotta admit.
But Dark Crystal wasn't good...
IT WAS FUCKING FANTASTIC.

What the fuck have The Dark Crystal and Avatar got in common anyway?
ghostofgeek 1 year ago
@conni60640 Agreed Labyrinth is an awesome movie, too, but its universe could have used more cohesion ; in comparison, The Dark Crystal is much more developped and complex ; it is probably also more serious than Labyrinth, that had more comedic moments.
AlexDraco 1 year ago
@conni60640 its a great movie. its part of my childhood. i always watch this movie and the neverending story when i want to reminicse my childhood innocence. it's such a great movie. and thats what most movies today lack, fantasy and wonder.
blackscarab1 1 year ago 4
@conni60640 same composer for both films

Beautiful and Epic this is another element that made the dark crystal one of the greatest fantasy films of all time. I would put this on the list of greatest musical scores consider it a number 2 spot next to the lord of the rings.

quand jim henson rencontre gary kurtz ça donne dark crystal!!!!! magnifique
kratos651 2 years ago
Well if you love Jim Hensons stuff, go watch :-)
Though I would say that this one is more of a spiritual fairytale about a quest of an elflike creature to unite his world again that was once split in pure good and pure evil. While the Labyrinth is more contemporary I think.
And the dark crystal has no humans in it, theyre all hidden underneath and inside the puppets ;-)
This is one of my favorites since all time since I watched it in the theatre when I was 8. Take a chance! why not :-)

I adore this film. I have it on DVD and used to watch it all the time as a kid. Such a great story, and so under appreciated. Awesome music. Thanks for the post!
felicianomiko 2 years ago 2
It is similar to Labyrinth in that it has lots of cool puppets and creepy monsters + in both movies the main character has to go on a journey to find something. I loved Labyrinth and I love the Dark Crystal so I would highly recommend them to anyone who hasn't seen them.

I love this film and its soundtrack. Its gives me comfort..
Mackingster 2 years ago 5
I want this entire soundtrack. Tevor Jones always does such lush music and this ranks as one of his best compositions. I remember the movie, I really liked the Skeksis and thought the Gelflings were annoying, I think it's because I was a little boy and really into "monsters". It's funny because as an adult, I'm still fond of the Skeksis.
