I've heard of even infants being put to death just because of their family name and the chance that they could grow up and start another revolution. Cruel, disgusting, and somewhat irrational? Of course, in today's context, but back then I can see it making sense. In any case, the world would be very different had it not happened.

I had read a short story in the past, that a good amount of the people who were guillotined were given a sedative of some sort, or were allowed to drink wine until they were very drunk before they faced their doom. Whether this story was accurate or not, is left to be determined. Thanks for the video.

@plusplusplusplusp That is for sure, if I recall from what was written in the book, it wasn't the guards who gave the condemned the drinks or drugs, but their friends who snuck it into them while paying their last visit to them. Plus, the condemned were usually laid on their backs instead of like it is shown in the movies, apparently to cause the person as much terror as possible before the blade came down. Terrible what people can do to each other.

Yep, when people are resentful they can be very cruel. When the architect of the Terror was executed, he had a shattered jaw, and when he was in the guillotine, the executioner tore off the bandage holding the jaw in place. The man was in so much pain he screamed until the blade came down to shut him up.

I'm glad Robbspierre ultimately got a taste of his own medicine. He was the evil mastermind behind the reign of terror (all of it) and he got his just reward on that hot summer day of July 18, 1794. He was the only one who was guillotined face up so that he could see the horror of his end, just as his countless victims had to.

you do realize that it wasn't just the aristocrats to be killed, it was anyone that went against the ideas of Robespierre. Of everyone that got killed during the Reign of Terror, only about 5% were nobles and clergy.
