How popular is the practice among Japanese kindergartens of having kids wear geta to school? I'm assuming they go barefoot once they get there?
Everyone has their own opinion, but I think it's lovely! If I ever end up in Japan and have a daughter, I'd send her to such a school... it would give her poise and elegance required for dressing up in yukata and geta. The time she spends barefoot probably counterbalances any bad consequences of wearing geta too much!
Hello unflocondeneige, Thank you for you nice words. I checked with my wife and she tells me that it is fairly rare to find schools in Japan where kids wear geta or go barefoot outdoors. Emily's school had several other curious aspects such as keeping windows open even during the coldest winter days as this was thought to toughen the kids up. The children were also encouraged to play hard and get as dirty as they liked. I hope that the experience will do Emily good. Thank you for commenting!
@softypapa: I think I've heard of those schools. It seems like one of those private schools I've heard about. Some kids thrive with that, others are more artistic and free-thinking.
I give you ***** it was very interesting, I did not know there was a single tooth geta, and the kid was so proud on showing it, nice and very intetesting culture, I love Japanese culture!
Hello slimek1337, Thank you for watching and commenting. I don't often see adults using single-tooth geta though these are indeed popular with children. A character from Japanese folklore called "Tengu" are often depicted walking the high mountains in very tall single-tooth geta. -Kurt :-)
@slimek1337 those single tooth geta were usually meant to be used to walk uphill on steep terrain, this way they are a lot more comfortable than walking a straight ground ^_-
Hello adrianrubi, Yes, men do indeed wear these. However, these day ipongeta are rarely seen worn by adults and only sometimes by children. Thanks for watching and commenting! -Kurt :-)
This geta are called tengu geta. ^^ I saw them first in the Mononoke hime movie by Miyazaki Hayao... but I had no idea they were real XDDD I really really want a pair. ^^
Leave it to the Japanese to make a pair of bulky wooden flip flops that have a thick piece of wood in the middle where you have to balance yourself to prevent from walking on a slant, LOL how stupid!!
The tooth actually helps you to walk and run because it allows you to lean forward and push back with your foot. Try running like that with flat, rigid slippers. Adult versions have to teeth because their feet are bigger.
Tengu geta and normal geta can be worn both by children and adults. the two teeth on the regular geta have nothing to do with the size of the foot. ^^UU
Hi Dave, Sorry for the repeat topic with this video. I received some email asking me for a video showing how to put geta on and this was the reason I did this little video. I hadn't realized just how much Emily had grown until I compared the two geta videos. Kids grow so fast! :-)
Yeah I know I had to compare them and she is growing fast but at least you are spending alot of time and energy with her... Some people miss that in life so good on you for that.
Lots of practice I think. This type of geta was made available to all of the children at Emily's kindergarten and thus they were able to begin practicing at a young age.
Goodness, she is so adorable. I like that she was honest in saying they weren't comfortable ;)
Zori I've seen more often than the geta, at least in general population. I imagine it's quite easy to get tired of the noise more than anything, but they look quite fun to wear.
cant wait til shes 18, mmmmhhhmmmmmm

Whoa, I knew of normal Geta with two 'tooths' beneath them, but it's first time I see one with single 'tooth'.
As I understand normal Geta are quite popular as a traditional footwear, but does really people wear sigle 'tooth' as well?
It's interesting and I'm amazed how people and kids can keep their balance while wearing these.

Actually, geta aren't clogs, they're closer to pattens, a sort of wooden sandal popular in Wedieval Europe.

I'm sure they develop balance in the people who wear them. For that reason alone, I'd love to have a pair.

Those are pretty cool, but loud. anyway, i don't think it takes too much practice, those "teeth" are pretty thick. You just have to get used to it.
