"Baseball is a sweet 92 year old man battling cancer who has devoted his life to calling and influencing the rich culture of America's pasttime and thanking the Lord every day for the strength and ability to do so."
@Heathnyy5 I, as a life-long Tiger fan, would not trade even a single one of your world championships for a single minute I spent with Ernie. Tiger fans understand that he was even a greater human being than he was a broadcaster. Other fans who had a chance to hear Ernie on a regular basis were Indian fans since the signal out of Detroit drifts into Cleveland's airspace. Because of that, the visitors' play by play booth is also named after Ernie Harwell.
Ernie, i was one of those kids who hid the transistor radio under his pillow back in then 70's so i could listen to the tiger games after my bed time. you were the voice of summer and the voice of my youth. you are missed. thank you.
I'm a Michigander transplanted to Philly about 18 years ago, and so was blessed to hear both Ernie and Harry Kalas at their best. Just Monday I was in the Harry Kalas broadcast booth at Citizen's Bank Park and wondered how Ernie was doing. RIP ol' friend.
I grew up in New York watching the Yankees, so I didn't know about Ernie Harwell until I got a little older, but since then I have been a big admirer of the man (I think it would be hard NOT to feel that way). I am just as envious of those Tigers fans who got to grow up with him as of the Dodger fans who have had Vin Scully. I am too young to have grown up with the legendary Yankees announcer, Mel Allen (I did get to spend time with the Scooter). My best to all Tigers fans, and Ernie's family.
So long Ernie, you were the epitome of a class act, so humble and caring, your game broadcasts on the radio during the summers of my youth, especially during the final three hours driving home to Detroit from "Up North" in Michigan during the 60s 70s and 80s, kept me and my family company more times than I can remember. God blessed you, and blessed us with your voice of the Tigers!!
another one gone, mel allen, Buck, Harry Kalas, Ernie, many a night spent traveling listening to one or another to keep me company on the lonely road.
"He stood there like the house by the side of the road and watched it go by." Thanks, Ernie, for using a transistor radio to transport a 14 year old kid from Rochester, Mich. to the corner of Michigan and Trumbull in 1968. I still have my album The Year of the Tiger; as well as the memory of sitting in the right field upper deck on Aug. 2, 1970. Killebrew hit 2 out that day and the Twins won both ends of a double header. And the only thing that mattered was it was Al Kaline Day. God bless you!
In 1986 Paul Carey announced a game along side Ernie....it was on August 22, 1986. On this day, Paul Carey wished me a Happy Birthday.....My name is Paul Cary.....named after him.....anyway....he wished me a Happy Birthday to Paul Cary Sweet.......and Chet Lemon grounded out.
Harwell was an overrated funny looking bum. Nothing good ever came out of Detoilet!!

it's a shame really.... too bad and good night little boy.... :)

@Chellopuddin And Ernie wrote those words, too, right? He was as gifted a writer as he was a broadcaster.
