There were other contraptions before that I agree but the guillotine as everyone pictures it with 45deg blade was French.

Execution of criminals is not something I take lightly; in fact, I feel a certain sadness when I hear about one being carried out. But, it is necessary. In the United States, many measures are taken to make sure that the convict is treated fairly and humanely. That is more mercy than many of them gave to their victims.
