They pretty much had the perfect cast for this film, but due to terrible page to screen adaptation and direction, they ruined it. Absolutely gutted. If it was half as good as the book was, I'd at least be partly satisfied, but the film wasn't even a shadow of the novel, more of a fat, ugly, hollywood imitation.

I think that The Golden Compass failed in many ways, the casting was not one of them.

Sam Elliot especially did a superb job. Reading the books I could not help but picture Elliot everytime Scorseby showed up in the story.

It's a shame that he got such little screentime in the flim.

Then again, the director tried to squeeze so much into the movie that pretty much everyone but Dakota Richards (Lyra) got very little screen time. :/

Hi Goatmon. I agree that Sam was wonderful. Sam Elliott may have gotten little screen time in the film. But I attended the New York City premiere of the movie and when the performers' names rolled down the screen at the film's end Sam's name got the loudest most enthusiastic applause of all the adult players. Sam's our guy!

Sam's been in movies for 40 years,He use to do beach movies,,And the like 25-30 years before T.B.L....It's so funny I tryed to talk everyone into seeing T.B.L when it was at the theater and no one liked it..Now that's what everyone remembers him for..to bad it sucked at the box office ..The Ceon Brothers should've reaped more profit from that icon of a film

I got to meet Mr. Elliott at a red carpet premiere of "The Golden Compass" back in December 2007. Though it was a brief meeting it was a profoundly special moment for me. Sam Elliott was and is a classy guy! Watch his interview on The Charlie Rose show and you'll see how intelligent and witty Sam is!
