I grew up in Iran. They used to show Indian movies in theaters because in those days Indian movie were very popular. All of us Iranians have seen this movie about 6 or 7 times! We also listened to the music on vinyl records. We have very good memories of those days. They dubbed this whole movie into Farsi except for the songs. The songs were left in original form. After release of Aag in 1948, Raj Kapoor wanted to picturize a script with the title "Ghraunda" ( toy house of sand or clay made by children) in early 1950s. He intended to cast Dilip Kumar and Nargis along with himself. But the idea did not materialize. Dilip Kumar declined the offer. The composers of this song Shanker-Jaikishen were often inspired by western classical music such as waltz and symphonies. I don't know why but I feel the tune of this song is from Tchaikovsky, the Russian composer, his melodies are as haunting as this one. The rest is screen play, voice and lyrics. It is too good.

This song is about the feelings of the singer when he feels that his closest & best friend, and his wife have been cheating on him (even though his wife had completely abandoned any past relation with the other guy after her marriage) ... and he is extremely heart broken because only these two people were the closest to him and he cannot bear the pain that they only would cheat him.

This scene is the climax of the story. Sundar destroyed his friend Gopal's life by taking Radha from him, and now destroys his own life. He seems so naive and innocent, but is so ignorant that only sees whatever is in his own mindset; never notices what others might have done for him. His indulging in his self-pity is not just funny but fatal.

Blind in his own love, he took beloved of his friend Gopal and killed him.

Sundar sacrificed his love for the ego centric Gopal who only sees his own point of view and does not realise the feelings of his friends.
