I saw Sophie's Choice with my mother, who is German. I remember asking Mom how Meryl Streep sounded when she spoke German in the film. Mom was awestruck - she said Meryl sounded exactly like a Polish woman speaking German! She could not get over that an American actress could get the accent so right.

@fruitcheese333 Meryl Streep was not necessarily doing an an Australian accent; more an impersonation of the woman she is portraying (Lindy Chamberlain) whose accent is a combination of Aus/Nz accent, and if you have ever heard Lindy Chambrlin speak before, you would agree that she has done a spot-on imprression. I also believe that Ms streep would have been able to pull off a pure Aussie accent if she was trying to. And just for the record, I'm and Aussie, too.

Even though it wasn't perfect, then it's really great, and well done of her, because there isn't many people, that can do what she can with their voice. I'm from Denmark, and I can tell that her Danish accent isn't perfect either, but it's still well done, that she spoke with an accent.
