theres so many greedy people in this world and learning / teaching .. so i thank you for being humble and taking time to explain such great talent you have thank you i have just picked up the piano if i had the chance at a younger age to learn i would of but sadly life didnt go as planned but thank you again your videos have made me want to keep learning god bless
@sazman333 REALLY pianissimo. play the key as quietly as possible, like ff means REALLY foritisimo, as in really loud. mf is metzo forte, meaning regular volume, and mp is slightly softer than mf.
I have been looking for a tutorial of this caliber for years. I have bookmarked the site and will be going there daily. You truly are a professional and your kindness and patience within these tutorials is staggering. i think i speak for all of the viewers, "Where not worthy! Where not worthy!" party on debussy, party on hugh sung.
Man you are incredible. I started playing the day b4 yesterday without a lesson in my life and after watching just the first 2 videos its like a veil has been lifted all i can play so far is heart and sould and the first 2 mins of Fur Elise but thats it. If you get time could you possibly do a lesson on Carter Burwells Bellas Lullaby because that is truly a modern masterpiece Thank you
I am 14 years old and yet another self taght pianist. I have been learning to play for three years or so now. Would I be aiming too high to learn this piece? Some of my friends are learning it and said it takes about nine months to perfect it. Is this true? Thanks for posting these videos, I am finding them really useful!
Before anything, CONTRATULATIONS for this well done job! You are a talented musician and a very good teacher please keep this good work!
One question: what can you tell us about the rhytmic aspect (at least of this first measures)? Before I could get the score and read it I used to think this was an anacrustic beggining, sort of like in Chopin´s Nocturne Op.9 No.2. Also there are many parts where I dont really hear the "3 beats" (of the 9/8), so when playing I tend to not have a steady pulse
Professor Sung, I am a 14 year old self taught pianist. I don't know a lot of key terms or things to know. Am I aiming to high? Should I try something simpler? I would love to learn this piece. It would mean so much to me if I could.
ive been playing piano for about 10 years now and have a very unique way of learning. I've never really found a way to learn music, but the way you are thorough with the music has been most benefitial. i look forward to being able to play this for my examination performance
I must say that these lessons are just great :) Thanks to you it's all really understandable. I have reeealy basic musical knowledge and never thought that I would even be concerning trying to play this beautiful piece, but these lessons made me want to try :) Thank you very much for the wonderful work!
I love you you explain things, it really makes everything easier. I play flute at school so i know a few things about notes and dynamics but I've been trying to teach myself how to play piano and you are extremely helpful. Thanks.
I like the middle section with the arpeggios in the left hand.Great And Very Expressive. How do you work out fingering problems when the sheet music has no fingering guide. I have been playing 11 years.but I thought I could learn something from yourself. I know fingering is contraversial in many ways. For example,Jazz Pianists improvize using strange fingerings.
Outstanding job. I hope to learn this piece in the next few weeks. Thank you so much for the insightful and inspirational videos. You are a very good teacher.
these are amazing videos and it really helps me because i have such a hard time reading music. I have been working on Claire de Lune for a really long time now and i have only gotten to the 15th measure! thanks for posting these videos!
I picked up this piece a few weeks ago.. and only being a lvl 3 piano player I was very discouraged by it, but your videos are really helping me understand alot of it. Thank you very much!
Youre an amazing teacher.. I wish I had you when I was 6 and had an old lady that smelled bad and would smash my fingers on the keys lol.. Good job and Thanks!
@dccousagurl Yikes, that sounds traumatic!! Hope you can let the past rest and look forward to seeing how much fun learning the piano can actually be!
Yes, Cunningham Pianos in Germantown, PA - that's where my piano is from! They are now making their own pianos (beautiful instruments), in addition to their piano restoration work. If you live nearby, you should check out their brand.
Thank you! It's been absolutely wonderful receiving so many kind comments from folks around the world. I'm glad I can help share my love of music with so many others this way!
Clair de lune from scratch ?? Are you being serious?? I mean... well... I really thing that you can be a good teacher , you seem passionate about what you do and make it sound easy ... but from there to claire de lune there is a long journey. People can get dissapointed. Well , thanks for your video anyway .
It's pretty ambitious, I know - but read the comments from other folks who have discovered the joy of making music for themselves. I'll let them speak for themselves as to how much these videos have helped them learn to play "Clair de lune". Granted, it's not easy to get to the end, but i think it's more a question of patience than ability. Every mountain can be climbed one small step at a time.
ah..i can't belive that there's a video for this magnificent piece...i've been dreaming playing this and now..i had found the answer..maybe i should stop dreaming and start playing..thank you very much in posting this video..
i recently started playing, about 2 years, and I doubt my teacher would start this with me. This lesson is very easy to follow and I feel like I am already learning a lot!
These lessons are designed for absolute beginners. Please let me know if anything is too difficult to understand or if I'm going to fast. Have fun learning!
Try taking things a little at a time. It can be too complicated if you take on too much at once, but if you can be patient and take little steps, you might be surprised at how quickly you can learn this piece. Let me know if you have any specific questions that I can help you with. Good luck!
awesome Hugh...just super!...beautifully played...wonderfully explained...i can't wait to find more time to learn this piece...can't thank you enough ...
Thankyou!!! I've had the sheet music forever, but it always looks so complicated and I could never figure out the flats on my own (Iv only been teaching myself from really simple books) SO thankyou very much for explaining it so well!
You're so welcome! I'm glad you find this explanation helpful. Once you break down each element, and with a little practice, I hope you find that reading music isn't so bad. Let me know if you have any questions or need any help.
I'm happy it's the weekend, Now I have the time to watch your videos =] Hopefully I'll pick it up. and I always wondered what did the pedals do, thanks for explaining!

Just posted the next one! I have about 12 more in the editing can, with several more video shoots plan to cover the rest of the piece. Would it be helpful to put up all the ones i have ready at once, or just one a day to help focus your practicing better?
even though these videos are a little bit slow for my pace, I like it because you make everything crystal clear

julymaeandaloc 10 months ago
@julymaeandaloc Interesting idea...but that LED/MIDI light strip looks far too small to cover all the notes in a piece like Clair de lune.
hughsung 10 months ago
@julymaeandaloc Bad thing about this is that you don't learn technics, you probably gonna be caught up in using the wrong vingers and not efficient

What does "con sordina" indicate? is that a dynamic?
dawg1157 1 year ago
@dawg1157 "Con sordina" means "with the mute", or in this case, the soft pedal on the piano (usually the one on the far left). Hope this helps!
