I am interested in becoming a music therapist! I find myself drawn to the idea. What kind of instruments do you need to play to be a music therapist? I only sing, and I am currently a vocal performance major.
@CMajor5 1 main instrument required (voice, piano or guitar) and proficiency in the other 2 mentioned. If you want to 'actually' do something with your musical talents, then music therapy is the way to go. Seriously look into it.
@bmoore326 I too have been looking for something meaningful to use passion for. I am interested in counseling and scored high for that type of profession using the Meyers Briggs test. Music Therapy is like combining Music and Counseling. I do have a more logistical question, does this profession pay enough to realistically one day stop my current profession and do it full time? I really have no no idea, and I doubt there is an public info about it.
@vanight Music Therapy is much more than just 'Music & Counseling', and I would need more than a few sentences to explain why.
I don't know what your current job is and couldn't tell you if you would make more or less than what you earn right now. I've just begun in the professionaly and I do quite well.
I cant wait to start training as a music therapist! Actually.... I cant wait to start uni alltogther. I'm only 16, but I know that this is what I want to do. It's so moving and insperational. Have you got any tips that might help me now...?
I'm currently doing a PE assignment based on music therapy, and it has to have a performance aspect. I was wondering if I could please be granted permission to use this video in that performance, as a means of introducing music therapy to the audience.
Beautiful! It's a shame that music therapy is largely overlooked in the public conversation about wellness and lifestyle healing. It's mostly consigned to our caring institutions. If we were to really tap the healing powers of sound and begin to make it part of the daily life in our homes, schools, work places, retail, clinics - and of course our institutions - then music therapy might be reframed in the public's mind... truly a "new perspective" on music therapy.
I feel music therapy could go much further. Music from Great composeers could be further analysed, tested, and "prescribed" to some patients. Instead of bongos and xylophones.
I am a music therapy undergrad major right now and let me just say this: I LOVE my major. Every day I look forward to the day when I can fully eat, sleep, and breathe music therapy sessions. I find it truly mind blowing. Also, my teacher is playing violin at 1:00 haha!

Music Therapy is a rewarding field. While in your major, ask about the pros and cons of the field and the safety issues so that you are aware before you finish your degree and go out into the real working world.
Thanks for making this:) I recently learned about music therapy and I am considering it as a career. I will be a senior in high school and I have been wondering what I will do in the future. I couldn't find anything that fit me, but when I heard about music therapy, I thought, "This is what I want to do!".
I am a senior in high school who is considering a career in music therapy and this video showed me a beautiful side of this career and gave me a greater desire to work in this profession. thanks.
Valid observation, however I would clasify dance therapy and drum therapy as sub-therapies of music therapy. Also, there is a lot more to music therapy than just rhythm, therefore declasifying it as strictly a 'rhythm therapy'. I would also put 'horse therapy' under the broader 'animal therapy', but I don't enough about it to validate that claim.
There has been much confusion about the song. It is Karl Jenkins' "Adiemus" - NOT ENYA. I know the vocalist sounds a lot like her, but I assure you it is not.
I am a Psy Nursing student and I would love to show my class this, It is wonderful!! Would it be possible to download it or show it off line because the psyc hospital that we are doing our clinicals at will not allow us axcess to their internet.
As a Music Therapy student, this presentation really hits home! Beautiful selection of quotes and images. May I ask what the song you used is? It's lovely:)

Working in the disability field has it
"pros and cons" like any other health

which is about working one on one
with individuals. Yet the, positives far
outweigh any possible "negatives"

I am not going to get into a semantic
disscussion about classifying therapies.
Yet, I can say after being a part of many horse and music therapy sessions that .both therpaies are incredibly interconnected in providing
a "freeing" effect for the participants
based in the basic rhtyms of life.
Thanks for your view point.
