I tried it on a new Wildfire and Wildfire S phone today. I used the mobile network as well as my local area network in my house. Quality is very variable. Totally unsuitable for a phone conversation unless you are comparing it to 1898. It you want to let your kids use your smart phones as walkie talkies and not pay for the calls (Fring to Fring) then it is OK. The quality is about as good as a cheap Chinese walkie talkie working at its best.

This won't work because you NEED the sim card in the phone in order to start the phone (if you're on AT&T, not sure about other services).

What is the purpose of removing the sim card? Couldnt you leave the card in and still do this, and then have the card in to be able to use it as a normal cell in case youre not around a wi-fi hotspot?

fring installed in your cellphone basicly operates the same way your msn software or gtalk software on your computer operates. your phone will log into your fring (analogue of gtalk) through wifi (wireless internet) and you get free make a call or chat. that's one cool stuff. that's my understanding, and correct me if i'm wrong. good luck
