As I mention in my video, I think U.S. foreign policy has contributed to human rights violations in Arab/Muslim nations by supporting repressive governments to help gain access to the oil in those nations. I think my government's foreign policy is somewhat arrogant and hypocritical.

Well you always hear about "wars for oil" but if people knew that we only get 19% of our oil imports from the Persian gulf they'd see that we're not pillaging the middle east for oil as many claim.
I think that our support of Israel is probably the biggest single factor. But muslims seem to be in conflict with it's non-muslim neighbors a lot. Israel,Darfur,Nigeria,East Timur,India, western China,Serbia,Checnya etal. They don't seem to play nice with others.
I think our support of Israel is one source of hatred. Even if 19% is correct, that's still significant, demand is increasing and supplies are diminishing. I've read and heard other interpretations of the Koran by muslims. Just like the old and new testaments, the Koran has different interpretations. Religious fundamentalists can be dangerous in any religion. Like any people or members of a religion, there is probably a wide philosophical range.

I'm not an expert on religion so I can't specifically address these. I can only say that many religious people claim their bible is the literal word of God and they all find some passage to support their interpretations. Furthermore, I'm sure that all muslims, just like all Jews and Christians, don't agree with everything in their bibles. And many people, like myself, find it incredulous that some blindly accept some of the hypocritical and intolerant actions espoused in their religions.

Are you all banding together? There are probably some extremists who believe what you say or use it to their advantage as our leaders use nationalism and as our religious leaders use religion to their personal advantage. But, if you read my other replies, I believe that our interference in their affairs to gain access to their oil at the expense of human rights is the most widespread cause. I do believe that Bush has caused more Arabs/Muslims to hate us. Altho they are not Arabs, Bush has especially antagonized Iran. The original point of this question was to hear what the candidates thought since none of them, except Ron Paul, understood the reasons.

Well you always hear about "wars for oil" but if people knew that we only get 19% of our oil imports from the Persian gulf they'd see that we're not pillaging the middle east for oil as many claim.
I think that our support of Israel is probably the biggest single factor. But muslims seem to be in conflict with it's non-muslim neighbors a lot. Israel,Darfur,Nigeria,East Timur,India, western China,Serbia,Checnya etal. They don't seem to play nice with others.

I think our support of Israel is one source of hatred. Even if 19% is correct, that's still significant, demand is increasing and supplies are diminishing. It also fits into a pattern in our foreign policy. Read Stephen Kinzer's "Overthrow: 100 Years of Regime Change". We have supported their repressive governments and they don't like our troops in their region. I'm sure there are many other reasons which also relate to our arrogance and hypocrisy.

So, apparently there are moderate Muslims that speak out. There are probably many that are sympathetic to the views of the radicals about our policies by the extremists but not their methods. To generalize all as radical is like saying that all Christians are intolerant, hypocritical neocons or that all U.S. citizens support our radical, corporatist foreign policy even though they don't speak out against it.

I've read and heard other interpretations of the Koran by muslims. Just like the old and new testaments, the Koran has different interpretations. Religious fundamentalists can be dangerous in any religion. Like any people or members of a religion, there is probably a wide philosophical range.

I'm not an expert on religion so I can't specifically address these. I can only say that many religious people claim their bible is the literal word of God and they all find some passage to support their interpretations. Furthermore, I'm sure that all muslims, just like all Jews and Christians, don't agree with everything in their bibles. And many people, like myself, find it incredulous that some blindly accept some of the hypocritical and intolerant actions espoused in their religions.

I'm not sure of the relevance of some of this. I can't speak directly to your comment about Muslims not hating Christians and Jews. No doubt the Koran, like the Old & New Testaments has enough passages that anyone can find any interpretation to justify their personal agenda. Many Muslims won't follow this precept whether it is a direct passage or some interpretation. We're getting a little off track mentioning the Iraqi invasion.

If your interested in our overthrows for economic self-interest and exaggerated fears of security, I recommend Stephen Kinzer's, "Overthrow....". He points out our actions with very little judgment. Our arrogant and hypocritical foreign policy has created a lot of hatred. While I don't think it justifies attacks on our civilians, I'm surprised, but happy, that there haven't been more.

Are you all banding together? There are probably some extremists who believe what you say or use it to their advantage as our leaders use nationalism and as our religious leaders use religion to their personal advantage. But, if you read my other replies, I believe that our interference in their affairs to gain access to their oil at the expense of human rights is the most widespread cause. We can't mitigate this hatred until we understand and acknowledge the effects of our actions.

Your demonization may eliminate moral ambiguity in your mind and make you feel more comfortable with your views but it leads to the killing of innocent people on the assumption that a group is all bad. This, in turn, can cause hatred by good people against good people. Furthermore, when one does do evil, they are still flesh and blood. The human response to this is to try to bring justice in a civilized way so we don't all become sub-human.

We were right to disable our enemies in Iraq, but wrong to sacrifice our troops and waste tax payer money and should have left within a month and moved on to our next enemy without worrying about rebuilding the threat.

We are a target because the leaders of these repressive governments enrich themselves and give us access to their oil. Because of our actions, if there were free elections, governments unfriendly to us would be elected and we would lose access to their resources. We have been doing this throughout the world since the 1890's. Demonization is the one of the oldest techniques used to justify self-serving actions. Neither you, nor most of the candidates understand the reasons for the hatred.

There are some who would like to see us "disappear" but there are also moderates. Most of their leaders support us while the people hate us and their goverments. Their hatred probably starts with the partitioning and prevention of self-determination by Britain and France, with our complicity, after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. We have meddled in their affairs and supported repressive governments to gain access to their oil at the expense of the economic and human rights of their people.
