This song was just awesome and why it didn't go Nationwide, I'll never know. I loved it when I was a "youngster" and I'm 57 now. The sixties hails as the best music EVER created!
I seem to recall this stayed in the #1 spot on the local and regional charts for about a month. It was picked up by Laurie Records, but didn't make a dent on the national charts. Should have went nationwide.
Frank Bugbee was in my grad class of 1966, New Albany High School. I talked to him several times by phone a couple of years ago. I didn't know, but after Elysian Field and Soul Inc., he went to California. Became a studio musician and was a guitar player for the famous Monkees. A band that out sold the Beatles in that time frame! So, if you were a Monkees fan, you've heard his guitar work. New Albany, Indiana... mecca for raw musical talent!!! Last I heard, was teaching guitar right here in NA!
Hello Wayne Young Yes it is Rob and I am still playing music and writing. It has been many years but at one time you and I played guitar and there was talk of me being part of Soul Inc. You can contact me at roaddog224 at you tube Rob
Here's a bit of trivia. Bugbee wrote this tune, but he wrote it for The Rugbys. The Rugbys could not get it the way Frank wanted, so Soul Inc recorded it. Bugbee also plays bass on this instead of Jimmy. The Rugbys are also on this record, singing backup. I think The Rugbys version is on the last CD of theirs.
frank was the best guitar player in the band, hell, just a great guitar player, but Jim with his soulfull voice and bass playing made the group great, i will always remember watching them play
60s, and remember these bands very well. Of course Frank Bugbee is from New Albany. He was a year behind me in high school. The metro Louisville area was brimming with musical talent. It is so great to hear all these songs again. Songs like this one, Look Homeward Angel, Small Town Gossip, Nite Owl, and This Old Heart, to name a few, could stand with any of the national hits. Too bad these great songs didn't get the exposure!
Somehow, this obscure (outside Louisville anyway) record was discovered by an Australian New Wave band called The Flaming Hands, who released a cover in 1980. Their version is OK, but this original is much better.
I remember the group from 1960's WAKY and this was one of my favorite songs when I was a teenager. (I'm 63 now!) Thanks for posting this bit of nostalgia, I STILL love it! Great song!
This song is my favorite one by Soul, Inc. If you were from Louisville then you might appreciate the songs I have on my Louisville and Kentucky artists playlist. Thanks for your comment!—David

@bruiser - That's an interesting bit of info. Which version do you like best, I've never heard The Rugby's version. Thanks for your comments.

If you grew up in the Ville, this was one of the classics along with Look Homeward Angel. Those two would stand against any songs, anywhere.
