I don't know much of Young, but I absolutely love this song and "Down by the river." Can anyone suggest some more of his songs that I might like? Preferably in a similar style as these two... Slow, methodical, emotional, electric solos
@Caruban615 Suggestions for Curaban ... Cowgirl in the Sand, Like a Hurricane, DangerBird, Powderfinger , pretty much any song from the album Zuma (1975) ... and certainly the Grace Potter/Satriani version of this song ...check 'em out ! You wont be disappointed ......
Probably the crowning achievement of Neil's career. Just remarkable, and far far better than any of the cover versions. There are surprises and revelations, musical and lyrical, all along the way. The song's a monument.
It was a beautiful day in Santa Fe. I went to hang out at The Plaza where I met a Hispanic man who gave me a history lesson. I asked if the Indians and Hispanics still dislike each other. He said he loved Indians but yes, they don't really get along. As we were speaking a young man with a loud voice holding up a bible told us we were all going to hell. This young man ATTACKED me and made me feel what it's like to be raped by the bible and ignorant people who force their beliefs upon others.
@HeidiIvy Do you realize what a fool you are? Few do, but really,.. reread what you wrote...even Neil is painting a wry picture...'The women all were beautiful, the men stood straight and tall...' Um, their teeth fell out when they were 25. Neil is making fun of you, at least that's my take discussing it with him in his very nice home in Silverlake. Raped by the Bible and ignorant people? Love to see you in a debate with a Jesuit,
@amdreampandd "Hate was just a legend and war was never known, people worked together and lifted many stone" I don't who the fool is, but your tone of voice is surelacking LOVE, and THAT's what it's all about. NOT people hiding behind their religions, preaching, "do as I say, not as I act", WHERE IS THE LOVE? Your tone shows me your Ego is in control, you are attacking me for simply trying to understand a song and my daily experience with people who have killed each other over religion.
@amdreampandd "Hate was just a legend and war was never known, people worked together and lifted many stone" I don't who the fool is, but your tone of voice is sure lacking LOVE, and THAT's what it's all about. @HeidiIvy My first comment referred to how the American Indians land was stolen from them by the Spanish who came here . They called the Indians savages and tried to "save their savage souls". The Indians went to the churches to be friendly- then said thanks but no thanks, we have our own beliefs. The Spanish then imprisoned them, the Indians fought back and won, then the Spanish came back years later and slaughtered them, right here where I live...The Bible talks of LOVE yet THIS happens.
@HeidiIvy Well, that's human hypocrisy at it's finest. We'll hurt each other over anything really.
I see your point, of course. Seems kind of contradictory, though, to use a phrase like "raped by the Bible" when you yourself say that it talks of love. The Bible and the people who throw it around like a baseball bat aren't the same entity.
@QuestyonMark yes indeed- you are right- the Bible does talk of Love and my comment "being raped by the Bible" does not sound loving. I guess you would have had to be me in that moment when I was indeed verbally attacked by someone with a Bible. This person was so shortsighted he had no idea how much pain he put me in with his words... I can not explain... that is why I posted my initial post here. I hear your point, TY.
FU-KIN-A. I first heard Neil Young when i was 12. my mom and dad were having a small get together with there friends at our house and i was aside from them while they sat in the kitchen talking about what ever i thought adults talked about when i was that age, to young to care, having other more fun things to do than listen. I was dign around in my dads cds in the living room and found a neil young cd and put it in just because i saw a guitar on the cd cover. and i havent been able to stop since
Beautiful song. Love the lyrics and the tightness of the band. They all play the rythmn so beautifully and Neil just plays his incredible relaxing solo's over them
@JDog1024 Do you think he doesn't know that already? Or do you think he needs you to state the obvious to him for him to understand the error of his ways?
Just listened to \ watched the Grace Potter \ Joe Satriani version. It was good, but just does not have the raw, honest emotion of Neil. Plus, as good of a technical guitarist as Satriani is, I find Neils' playing is much more truthful and passionate.
@microdon2 I agree, I think the only one who does neil justice is warren hayes, his version with dave Matthews has the same kind of strength and feeling.
This song is awesome. Gives me good memories of jamming out to this and down by the river with myself on drums and my father on guitar.... good times. :)
One of his Greatest - the idea that he would just casually blow off the loss of a last verse seems Neil -- hope to cover this one at the Taiwan Peace Fest this Sept. (formerly Hoping for Hoping) -----Schneiderama
What current, mainstream, pop culture shit music can even come close to this? Nothing. Intelligent people will still be listening to songs like this long after bieber and gaga are on celebrity rehab for the fourth time.
Neil Young makes the most depressing, spirit-crushing noise in the world. Neil Young is responsible for more suicides than all the other causes of depression known to mankind.
@ScouseTapas The Potter and Satch version is very different and because of Satch's technical ability and Potter's vocal chops it captures a whole new side of the song. They are both amaxing in their own right.
@firefly8900 Thanks. History is a bitch, but then native Americans slaughtered other tribes on a regular basis. The line ''War was never known'' makes me laugh every time I hear it. The Aztecs used captives from other tribes they conquered as sacrifices.
@mfish618 War is a different scale which I think was the intended point, noted the aztecs and mayans were some of the most brutal in history but the spanish almost wiped them all off the map which was a little different to slaughtering one village.
@perzo449 Yeah, no doubt. The whole European migration was an exercise in extermination. The dieases the Spanish introduced probably killed more Aztecs than Cortez, but he was a world class monster.
@Hunteroffags I'm sure he knows what "nostalgic" means, from the context of his post. Why don't you get a day job as a proof reader, or something like that?
@Hunteroffags maybe he first listened to the song when he was young and the concert made him feel nostalgic, or maybe looking back at the concert induces his nostalgia.
I saw this live in Optimus Alive 2008 festival, till this day, one of the most nostalgic moments of my life. thank you for posting this, its hard to get good sound quality versions such as this.
