I love this version. I have not heard it in a few years. Last night when I was watching an episode of "The Good Wife", the background music sounded familiar. At the end of the episode it was this music that was being played. Just excellent. You can dance a waltz or a soft polka.
this is a fake movie.... In the reality its not a french corsair but the american USS Norflock during the War of 1812. but like the it's an american movie...
i would have loved to see an american ship in this movie, its always interesting to see the us involved within the napoleonic wars even though they never wanted to.
You may think that but unfortunately you are wrong. It is not where the ship is built it is what nationality the flag it sails under! The ship “Alabama” was built by cammell laird of Liverpool but it was owned by the Confederate States and fought on their side. Even now you would be in trouble if you suggested the ship was British.
The young lords training with the Admiral and Blakely at all of 10 in full command of the Surpise during the boarding, giving the men courage and commanding the squadron to "Fire"! What a piece of history!
When I see this, I remember that, not only will there be a second M&C, but also a movie about the American frigate USS Essex during the War of 1812 (the ship whose actions against British whaling vessels was the inspiration for O'Brian's The Far side of the World). Was it just rumours, because I haven't heard anymore about either projects for years?
@MINGDINGHADYN why would we be dislike this? This is a typical hollywood movie made for anglo-saxons. But we actually learn proper history in France. And the film is based on real events wich happened between the USA and England but of course it wouldn't have been good marketing to make a movie in wich a US ship lost a battle against an english ship. So they decided to replace the US ship by a french one.
I've been on a private tour of the ship while in San Diego. It was in harbor to re do it after they messed it up for the movie. I assure you it's full sized.
@Rao665 yeah the HMS Victory (Lord Nelson's Flagship During the Battle of Trfalgur) is still a commissioned vessel and is still manned by the British Royal Navy :)
@AViolentCobra well the HMS Victory has ran aground. But the great USS Constitution is still afloat. I respect Lord Nelson and the history of the Royal Navy, but our ships still sail!
@Rao665 They Put Victory in a dry dock to preserve it because it is of extream historical value, the differance between the 2 is that the Constitution went under very extensive repairs in 1858 (i think) to ensure that it would still float for years to come and has been rebuilt several times since, at one point being a floating barracks, whereas the Victory 1805 was restored to a warship from a hospital ship, served again for 100 years then they agreed to restore it and preserve nelsons legacy :)
@Rao665 both mighty ships, but differant types of ships :), Victory is a First-rate ship of the line (slow heavy 104ish Guns), Constitution is a Frigate (Fast 52ish Guns) so in a battle it would be very hard to tell who would win, if along side Constitution would be history but with the constituions speed they could cut across the front or rear of the Victory avoiding a full Broadside and causing ALOT of damage... Love both ships
@AViolentCobra which makes it kind of sad that the Victory doesn't sail anymore. For a nation that spends a lot of time with ceremonial units and such, I'm surprised that the Royal Navy doesn't have an equivalent to the Constitution. As far as battle though, I'm not sure if the Constitution would have survived.
@Rao665 yeah, but also becuase of our current goverment the royal navy has no money, but i agree they should have restored it to be able to float like the did with the constitution in 1995? :D
@ericzhi Me too would have loved to serve in The Royal Danish Navy by then secound best in the world besides the Brits. Arghh If we could have bombed the English at Helsingør the Battle of Copenhagen would have been quit different!
Indeed. Your navy was pike in our flesh during those times, but must admit it would have been wonderfull to serve in Royal Swedish navy during those times, be a officer or sailor in powerfull line ship.
@ericzhi No you weren't, imagine not being able to listen to this song over and over, because there was no means of recording sound ... how do you like them apples?

@volper1690 be that as it may, Hollywood helped make this and many other glorious movies, so you have to deal with a hand full of gravel to get the few precious stones, if you know what I mean.
@volper1690 People just don't go and see movies like this anymore, no matter how excellent they may be. When they see a sailing ship they dismiss it as boring. People do not like GOOD films anymore, they like SHINY films with gratuitous 3D nonsense.

@MrRotstift It's a movie not a history book, its reason is to entertain, not inform, keep in mind, the book itself was fictional as well. And what the hell are you referencing saying " American fake" its a story, of course its fake you ignorant, bastard.
@AnnaTheGreat1 Well, a story with a political PURPOSE, Im afraid. On balance the French have become the easy villenous bastards (to borrow a word from you, madame) of most American 'stories' : Do I recall correctly that this 'story' was - changed- to have a French (why never ever a US, actually?) adversary exactly at the time when France spoke out against the Iraq War? Surely to un-Americanise this ship and to 'frenchisise' it - purely for entertainment purposes ;) Dream on, simpleton.
@MrRotstift Political Purpose How do you possibly support this statement I see no reason why the french would be the villains (to correct the word of yours sir) of American stories or have I seen or read any proof of the allegation. In the story in which the movie was based the adversary WAS France, just the Napoleonic wars? I don't know where you get of with talking about present day wars in Iraq Pick up a history book instead of spewing your ill educated baseless Anti-Americanism.
@AnnaTheGreat1 Well, it's not entirely fictional, the books were based off a British naval officer, Thomas Cochrane, and some of his battles at sea, though they were not entirely accurate, the events had happened did more than 100 years ago. But I still agree with you, this is not meant to tell a story in the past at all, it is a movie that was somewhat based off books that were based off events that happened a long time ago. Why the other is complaining about accuracy is beyond me.
Even though this was written in 1780, all you gotta do is throw some drums in there, add some short and simple lyrics, then go around saying it's from a band from NYU or something and BAM!, you got yourself a modern day indie pop hit.
@AgujaAzulMD Actually, that is a pretty reasonable point, indeed! Especially considering that this is such a simple (despite, apparently, rather quite old) song.
I find some reactions quite shocking about this so called European nostalgic Chauvinism. It's nearly racist. This movie nor this music was made with those intentions. I like this movie and it's music and I'm a DutchMoroccan of muslim descent.
It's amazing how much grit and toughness the British displayed to set up their empire. Today however, most Europeans are weak and fluffy. It's like the lesson they learned from two world wars is to not fight and live in a nanny-state.....instead of live free and fight evil when it arises. Should be interesting to see how they deal with the muslim immigration invasion in the next century.
Europe is so far from the top of the chain that it cannot see the top. Anti competitive restrictions, lack of social mobility, excessively high levels of taxation and unrealistically generous pension benefits and early retirement will spell the doom of Europe. But for the hated USA, Europe would have gone from one dictatorship to another. USA conquered all, then set them free. Who else in the history of the world has done the same?? No one. USA will be sunk by its growing pop of dead weight.
@paliesq That is easy to say my friend. Those things you mentioned is not what will be the doom of europe, quite the contrary. The doom for europe will be the muslim colonization. Americans way of life and their multiculturalism have been preached for us here in europe since the end of ww2 for far to long, it will for sure be the end of Europe as we know it.
I rather have europeans shape their own destiny than let it be americanized to ruin.
@paliesq Americans always speak about their "freedom" and what a privilige it is for all of mankind. But is your freedom really such a good thing? No its a degenrating destrutive fake freedom which breed greed, idiocy, individualism and selfisness. The american way is no more than earn as much money as you can and dont mind elbowing your way. Americans only get indoctrinated that you have "freedom" and that its worth defending, a freedom with no substance or reality.
@thenotoriousadin LOL, did you just say that "IT" gets closer to real music than me? Okay, for starters, "IT" is the most unoriginal piece of shit to ever come forth from someone's asshole, and therefore is incapable of ingenuity. Thus, all he can do is show everyone his filthy lice infested wig and pretend to sing. I predict he will be an STD infested heroin addict by the time he is 20.
@Purplecatsoup30 I dont respect the man at all, and certainly dont like the music he plays, its not my stuff. It is still music nonetheless. All I'm saying is that lets see you scribble some music together, rather than just be another Pop Music hater. so counter productive....
iam 21 years old from UK and class my self as a lad but this small bit of the soundtrack is so easy to listen to and dnt understand y ppl dont listen more off it.
...and, like I said, the doctor-impostor's identity only becomes clear once the credits have rolled and you see the actor of the doctor-impostor listed as the French captain.
Yeah, but there was no way of telling from inside the movie's story itself, I saw it several times over.
The only thing from which one can tell is that the end credits expressly name an actor - Thierry Segall - as "Captain" of the Acheron who in fact presented himself as (and was called!) the "docteur" in that scene near the end of the movie.
Practically the only way of telling for certain was to picture-google that actor's name and compare w. the characters on the Acheron!
@MareIngenii I'm not 100% sure what you're trying to say. But. At the end they realize the doctor died awhile ago, and seeing as they met the 'doctor', they knew he was really the captain! So they turn around to sort that out.
I'm puzzled as to what you felt was unclear about what I said...
Your explanation restates the very impression I tried to set straight.
The point is this: We DO know from the movie's storyline that the Frenchman who handed Captain Aubrey the sword on the Acheron was a doctor-impostor. What DOESN'T follow is that the doctor-impostor is the captain of the Acheron. The impostor could have been a surgeon's assistant, another French officer trying to save his life, or Lord knows what.
Love it, simply love it, love it so much. This music, the story, the romanticism, the wit in that last scene with this perfect finishing piece setting in. And how it gains pace against that wonderful final perspective, with the strutting Surprise in the foreground and the Acheron on the horizon. What a movie, what wonderful arrangements.
In the 100 Greatest Britons list there are some ludicrous omissions & inclusions.
One of the omissions is of course that of Thomas Cochrane which Hornblower & Aubrey most notably is based upon. This type of man made Britain great, quite unlike the dump that it is now!

Even though this was written in 1780, all you gotta do is throw some drums in there, add some short and simple lyrics, then go around saying it's from a band from NYU or something and BAM!, you got yourself a modern day indie pop hit.
AgujaAzulMD 8 months ago

No one. USA will be sunk by its growing pop of dead weight.
paliesq 10 months ago
@paliesq That is easy to say my friend. Those things you mentioned is not what will be the doom of europe, quite the contrary. The doom for europe will be the muslim colonization. Americans way of life and their multiculturalism have been preached for us here in europe since the end of ww2 for far to long, it will for sure be the end of Europe as we know it.
I rather have europeans shape their own destiny than let it be americanized to ruin.
Kopfschmerz86 10 months ago
@paliesq Americans always speak about their "freedom" and what a privilige it is for all of mankind. But is your freedom really such a good thing? No its a degenrating destrutive fake freedom which breed greed, idiocy, individualism and selfisness. The american way is no more than earn as much money as you can and dont mind elbowing your way. Americans only get indoctrinated that you have "freedom" and that its worth defending, a freedom with no substance or reality.

@Purplecatsoup30 haha fuck he probably gets closer than you ever will in this lifetime or another.
thenotoriousadin 11 months ago
@thenotoriousadin LOL, did you just say that "IT" gets closer to real music than me? Okay, for starters, "IT" is the most unoriginal piece of shit to ever come forth from someone's asshole, and therefore is incapable of ingenuity. Thus, all he can do is show everyone his filthy lice infested wig and pretend to sing. I predict he will be an STD infested heroin addict by the time he is 20.
Purplecatsoup30 11 months ago
@Purplecatsoup30 I dont respect the man at all, and certainly dont like the music he plays, its not my stuff. It is still music nonetheless. All I'm saying is that lets see you scribble some music together, rather than just be another Pop Music hater. so counter productive....

4 people didn't realize the captain of the Acheron was still alive.
Cilogy 1 year ago 5
@Cilogy
MareIngenii 11 months ago
@MareIngenii I'm not 100% sure what you're trying to say. But. At the end they realize the doctor died awhile ago, and seeing as they met the 'doctor', they knew he was really the captain! So they turn around to sort that out.
Arcexey 11 months ago
@Arcexey:
