Really, I think this is one of the best performances of this divine cantata... The voice and the soulful violin, having their own goal and aspiration, intertwine in a melodious incantation ...
how could anybody ever possibly dislike this video?? This is such an incredible performance, I have not stopped listening to it since I found out about this woman. My most prominent influence as a singer in training.
@pyrrooo I have full exposure to 'people like Andreas Scholl and John Eliot Gardiner'. I actually enjoy very much their music and their interpretations.
But I' m sick of this wave of 'real baroque-know it all' fans out there. I have news for you. NOBODY knows how they played baroque music back in 1600. The 'real baroque' is just a point of view. It wouldn't even exist if people like Karl Richer and Julia Hamari didn't create this.
@vasrach Just because YOU don't doesn't mean WE don't. How many treatises have you read and how many manuscripts have you seen? have you ever played on original instruments? If not, then you are in no place to say "nobody knows how they played baroque music back in 1600". True, we don't have a sound recording, but we have all the other sources of information. Please realize that your own ignorance does not apply to the rest of the world.
@pyrrooo Music is not a sum of original instruments and manuscripts. Music above all is about feeling, interpretation, understanding of what the composer wants to say and connection between the player and the listener. The way you responded bringing on only the technical aspects of music actually makes my point. I'm sorry for you if you can't appreciate the beauty of the above video. You miss way too much.
@pyrrooo And who, exactly, is WE?! I studied organ with the protege of the premier Bach organ scholar in the world, and SHE said the work instructs, it does not inform. You must be young...only a very young person would presume to know the unknowable. I'm with @pyroo...it's sad that you can't appreciate the supreme artistry of this recording. Just stick with what you "know" and let the rest of us enjoy Julia Hamari's work.
@rosinlr What wise words. Wise words, and true. 'Only a very young person would presume to know the unknowable'. And what a piece of music! Beyond words.
@pyrrooo I have, in fact, had exposure to 'real baroque music in general', you clearly haven't if the only people you manage to pull out of that category are Andreas Scholl and John Eliot Gardiner.
Her singing is sublime. There cannot be any question about that.
Was this the debut of Julia Hamari?. I know the Julia's debut was performing the matthaws passion with Richter as conductor in 1966. Is this that work?
This is the most beautiful Bach creation I have listened to since JSB came into my life in 1951 during the St.Matheus performance in Utrecht, The Netherlands.
Most solits singing this aria are inspired by the sublime musical balance between voice and instrument of this work, that they usually reach the optimum of their ability.
@jmkroczek The Baroque era was one of the most passionate, expressive eras in history; have you looked at the architecture, read the plays and literature, seen the art of that era? @geraldvanwilgen Fpr heaven's sake, do a Google search for FAMOUS BAROQUE THEATRE PLAYS; do your own research. and you might appreciate what you learn more than taking other people's word for everything; do you believe everything people tell you or what you hear on TV? I'll give you one answer" HAMLET by William Shakespeare is one of the most famous Baroque era plays.
@billyguns2 Thank you for enlightening me. I in tears with gratitude, someone actually took the trouble responding to my simple question! And Shakespeare baroque! Who would have known, those English were so with it so early, I almost feel bad not having any English blood running through my veins.
@billyguns2 I was talking about the violins :) of course senza vibrato would be wrong aswell, no need to react in a sharp way like that. I study music and recently played and sang this piece three times, so.. plus, I never said I'm a specialist, you said that ;) best wishes.
@billyguns2 Sharp dissonances get weakened in their effect when you put a wobble on them. By the way, Julia Hamari is the teacher of Dorothee Mields, one of the "early music specialists" which "make you sick" (you can hear that from her immaculate legato, her tasteful soft high notes, phrasing and other qualities most modern opera singers are lacking). And of course no baroque composer used the expression "senza vibrato". This is a 20th century invention.
I completely agree with you. She's treating this as a 100% solo. It isn't, it's a duet with the violin, only you wouldn't know it by listening to this recording.
Schitterend!
Whenever someone attempts to reduce humans to the status of animals (though there are plenty of them that deserve that status), my retort is not to pay heed to industrialization, electronics, and not even religion; but rather, aside from science and philosophy, artists such as Bach. Truly a great example of the unparalleled essence that is the potential of the human mind and spirit. Not to mention the passion and technical expertise of those that recreate his work.
@Dominicwashere spare me. i said spirit, not soul; spirit in the sense of the essence of human beings as opposed to the heavily instinctual nature of animals. i wasn't trying to "prove" anything anyways., as you seemed to suggest.
@mburke000 I wasn't trying to attack you... I was just interested in your opinion. And you're right, I did mistake spirit for soul because Bach was very religious himself... But you should know that human beings also have a heavily instincual nature, we just don't have to use these insticts since we live in this particular society (no need for a wider explanation;) ) but when we have to survive in the wild our instincts will take over..... (although maybe not in your case xD)
I am delighted to have found this marvelous rendering. Both violin and voice, to say nothing of the supporting players, are superb-- so beautifully controlled. We were taught to treasure Bach at school and no music can outdo this touching accompaniment to the story of the passion of Jesus, the Messiah. May the whole world be drawn to listen to such an affecting example of the expressiveness of the human spirit.
As many times as I have heard this aria sung by both men and women, nothing ever seems to compare in emotion, richness and "passion" as this version sung by Julia Hamari. Thank you. Your upload is the clearest on YouTube.
Years ago I walked through Leipzig, went in the Thomas Kirche and sung 'Erbarme dich', just for myself. As always I did remember Aafje Heynis, who performed this song as Bach must have meant it, completely by heart and I was there on two meters distance in the choir and I never was so deeply touched by this song, but... Julia Hamari comes close, very close.
@tamerlano236 It's beyond me how you can even compare the two...You have spammed every recording of "erbarme dich" on YT with your advertising of this Spanos recording, which is clearly amateurish. I mean, PLEASE
I think German in the only language that could express those deep feelings. Modern Latin languages are quite superficial because they are naturally very melodious. German, just as Latin, goes deep into your soul.
@Vlaanderson Someone should have warned Dante, Cervantes, Racine that by using neolatin idioms they were condemned to frivolity and superficiality.... and "Das Fledermaus" or "Die Forelle" are clearly deep, sorrowful works...
There are musical composers with varying abilities but Bach was one of the best because he trained and worked hard throughout his entire life. He was exceptional, talented and dedicated to his work more than most. Someone must be the best. But to then credit the achievement to a god is quite primitive and a slap in the face to Bach. This is 2010. When it rains, we no longer give praise to the rain-gods for working their heavenly magic.
@diego2k10 Read about Felix Mendelssohn. He worked on reviving some of Bach's work, and I believe this piece was one of them. He had the sensitivity to carry that off.
Absolute perfection

Is it just me, or is Julia a bit overpowering? I want to hear more of the first violin and orchestra.

God, this is beautiful. The violinist alone, is sublime, as is Julia. By far, my most favorite piece of music in the world. 500 Stars.

This and Purcell's "When I am laid in earth..." always make me cry! The power of music can be magic!

It is a pity that,in those times, Bach was played by violinist with so much vibrato.
Beautifull interpretation nevertheless
