I have both fallout 3 and new vegas and got them both on there release dates. Fallout 3 had the biggest WOW factor and when you first played it it was alot more amazing than when you first played new vegas BUT to be fair Just because Fallout new vegas is the newer version and because its vegas I prefer new vegas :P Got kicked out of one of the casinos for winning 20,000 caps in one of the gambling machines ;)

This game was so much better than Fallout 3 imo. Better writing, lots of FACTIONS and the weapons and the world was a lot more fun too. You don't spend 50 hours in subways.
