The device you see on the top left side of the machine behind the thread take up lever, adjusts the presser foot pressure. Some of the machines do not have this feature. Some newer machines are automatically adjusted for the thickness of the fabric.
When the fabric is thicker the presser foot needs less pressure to let you sew properly. On this machine the numbers go from 0 to 4. The higher the number the more pressure will be exerted by the presser feet.
I have a somewhat similar Kenmore 10 158 12511 that I'm trying to learn on. I'd like to see something more on the stitch selection/ width/ modes and basic settings.
