Being a colony of the UK makes many countries and regions different -- not only Singaporeans, some HongKong people also don't want to admit they are Chinese even after 1997.
For the same reason, Li Denghui (李登輝) sees himself Japanese instead of Chinese or Taiwanese -- being a colony of another Country will lead to many issues afterwards.
