That is not why it is the way it is now. That is a racist comment. The people of Detroit prospered in the past, of all ethnicity. This happened because city council has been failing the neighborhoods and the community as whole. Thing is Highland Park is only 5 miles away from West Grand Blvd. West Grand has most of Detroit's government buildings.

Yes, this has been going on for a long time in Detroit. It began when the riots occured in 1967 and people felt less safe. They then began moving into the suburbs and that's what helped launch the urban sprawl. The city was built on industry (primarily automotive). Costs went through the roof (taxes, unions, govn't regulation) and they slowly moved out. This isn't a Democrat or Republican thing...High taxes and other costs to "evil" companies do this. Figure it out or we're all doomed!

That must have been scary but I'm sure it's only got worse since then. I've watched several videos on the fall of Detroit but I really enjoyed this one the most, George did a great job. This is nothing new. The fires, and garbage, and dumping has been happening for YEARS! I mean 25 years or more. Highland Park was once home to Chrylser corporation before they took off to the norther burbs in the late 80s. Once this happened, the entire small city fell down and hasnt risen since. HP used to be a very affluent town back in the day. Actually Detroit was once a beautiful place to live and work. Its sad. I grew up there, but i had to leave. I could no longer stay in it

America's economy is hardly "free" market capitalism. Protection against destitution following layoff is covered by unemployment insurance in the U.S., for example. There are also various charitable and public programs to prevent hunger among the unemployed. Granted, when set against the welfare states of western Europe, ours is very austere, but it does cushion the blows somewhat.
The point is that without any government intervention on behalf of the poor, Detroit would be A LOT worse off.

Detroit has never recovered from the recession in the early 80s, as well as the emergence of the foreign automaker in the last 25 years. Other rust belt cities were able to recover after manufacturing jobs moved overseas, but Detroit's reliance on car production ended any recovery.

I knew when I graduated high school they wouldnt last forever. However, all of my family stayed and now wonder why they are in such a dire situation...very frustrating.
Remember seeing pics of Detroit in its hey day when I was a kid. It was beautiful. However, never got to see it with my own eyes, though...

Yes, this has been going on for a long time in Detroit. It began when the riots occured in 1967 and people felt less safe. They then began moving into the suburbs and that's what helped launch the urban sprawl. The city was built on industry (primarily automotive). Costs went through the roof (taxes, unions, govn't regulation) and they slowly moved out. This isn't a Democrat or Republican thing...High taxes and other costs to "evil" companies do this. Figure it out or we're all doomed!
