with certain electric alarm devices (like the one Shane put on Zeth's window at the beginning), the electrical current can be interrupted with a magnetic due to its own magnetical current. Zeth wanted to get out of the house without Shane knowing, (without setting off the alarm right?), so he stuck a fridge magnet on the alarm's electrical current outlet - on his window sil - thus interrupting the current and turning off the alarm so he could escape! - Smart kid eh?
