Phone plan's normally at least 40 bucks a month- 45 for what I need.

5 bucks for 6 gigs of download on my phone? Sure.

Hotspots are a damn bad idea. Pretty insecure, require access to a certain area, and are usually pretty slow.

free wifi hotspots can be bad/ dangerous. look into the Jasager pinapple and a program called SET. the Jasager pinapple pretends to be your wifi connection while it records everything you do and copies it to another compter. the program SET will clone any website and inject virus code to infect your computer.

Data plans BLOW. My dad had a Verizon hotspot, and it was like 40 or 50 bucks a month, and a bunch MORE if you went over 5GB worth of downloads PER MONTH. 5 gigs?? I almost went through that in a month (3 gigs) mostly by watching a bunch of Youtube videos and shit. I heard that they USED to have unlimited downloads on these hotspots, but I guess they got pissed off that everyone was "downloading too much", and they saw a great profit opportunity in limiting it, or whatever.

@shadowsa2b depends on the device: some cell phones allow you to wirelessly connect without a data plan but most require one. I have an iTouch that allows me to connect wirelessly to any hotspot for free. It's those devices (iTouch, iPad, Sony MyLO, etc) that allow connection to a hotspot without a data plan.
