Nice itinerary! Next time try to work your way down further south, like Algeciras, Gibraltar, N. Morocco. I suggest also while in that area to visit Cadiz, Jerez de la Frontera. From Madrid take a side trip to Toledo. And don't forget to visit Spain's neighbor, Portugal. When I read your itinerary I thought that was straight up tourist but then I saw you brought your kids with you so that's a different story.
