Harold Melvin was getting paid, but he had to be hating life during this time. Its his name on the marquee, but all the ladies were loving the lead singer. Hell on earth...
LOL! Oh ok. Yeah I can see now that its a wig. Lets just hope these guys 2day dont try it! LOL!!! Can you imagine, pants dragging with a wife beater and wig on????? Not pretty!
There is no one new out there who can beat this voice, think about the singers from this era, Levi Stubbs, Teddy, Marvin Gaye, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Eddie Levert, Lenny Williams, and many many more whats out there today Justin Bieber CRAP
I know it talks about a love of man/women but when this song came out I just thought of my "MOM" who died Aug 14th 1970! and the tears started to roll down my face like they are now....what a strong impact the "old school" songs had back in the day such LOVE and SOUL went into the lyrics just like looking into someones eyes and actually seeing the "Tracks of Their Tears" ....can you see them??? Gotta love old school.
When you hear someone listening to this, they are hurting a girl or a guy has them mess up. You know how it is when you mess up a good thing now you are thinking of all the things you could have did or things you should not have did.. Baby. I Miss You. we all had a broken heart. It happen to the best. Timeless song still bad till this moment. AL O Brooklyn
He was my cousin and I agree what was he thinking when putting on that wig.. LOL! But once I got to know him I realized it was all a stunt to make sure that you remember who is who in the group because for so long everyone thought Teddy was Harold Melvin... he is and was one to make a bold statement.. It's show business.. All artists did something wild and crazy but guarantee you never forgot them... hahaha....Also, I asked after his passing was he gay and the answer came back no. only God knows
@N1RuffinFan David Ruffin is a high art soul vocalist talent for sure...but better than Pendergrass? DR simply doesnt have TP's raw brute vocal power...its soulful and explosive. TP's raw voice > DR's raw voice...sonic qualities superior in addition to more powerful. Otis Redding won his "My Girl" battle with DR too. DR needed the Temps cohesion, rather he knew/recognized it or not is another issue
@Rams4ever Teddy was great and probably did have more power than David. It isn’t all about power though. David had a three octave range. On Teddy’s best day he couldn’t get as high or smooth as David. As far as ‘Miss You’ Teddy is using so much power til it sounds like he is fussin at the woman while David sounds like he is pleading/cryin to the woman. It’s one thing to sing a song and another to articulate it.
@Rams4ever Rolling Stones has a list of the 100 greatest entertainers of time and Otis Redding tops that list. I bet only a diehard fan know that he song “My Girl”. The Temps version will always be the superior version. As great as Marvin was he did it no justice either. David was equally good as a solo artist if not better, but he was a rebel and not promoted.
@N1RuffinFan DR was utterly replaceable. How could DR improve the lead vocal line on Papa Was a Rollin Stone? The main strength of DR was to take the rawness edge off of vocals and steps when Berry Gordy wanted to appeal to an audience that unprepared to receive the full rawness of untempered soul. Along come Pendergrass and Redding whose aim it was to give you more "soul" than your senses could stand as iconic, incomparable soul vocalists. These 2 singers were redefining the boundaries of soul.
@Rams4ever Obviously, everyone in the Tempts was replaceable. I won’t deny that. I often wonder how David would have sounded singing psychcedelic soul music. Good I think.. I accredited the top Motown writers for knowing how to match lyrics with vocals. Had David stayed with the group maybe it would have been Paul singing the lead on ‘Rolling Stone’. Listen to “Standing On The Top”, Me & Rock-n-Roll Are Here To Stay”, or “Make My Water Boil” (just to name a few). DR could adapt to those styles.
If anyone ever heard David Ruffin's version of this song, which was better? David sang all the falsetto parts & baritone's parts himself, but Teddy's voice...DAMN! IDK, been having this discussion for years...
@djcal623 NOW HE SHOULD BE ABLE TO TRY A JAMES BROWN STYLE WITHOUT BEING CALLED GAY. NO ONE CALLS SNOOP DOG, GAY, WHEN HE GET HIS PIMP HAIR ON. AND GET IT DONE UP. TO CHANGE HIS LOOK.
@CalypieAndroid you better tell the truth. if they ever watches soul train or any ol school movie from the 70's then thye'd know that it was a style that some black men wore back then
@CalypieAndroid ...look he was gay...or as ppl may wanna call it bisexual(not much differance to me) but umm he did venture in that area as well as prince rick james freddy jackson luther...and im a fan of them all as prince once said when asked about it...hey it was rock n roll baby...
@Donnymac look he was gay...or as ppl may wanna call it bisexual(not much differance to me) but umm he did venture in that area as well as prince rick james freddy jackson luther...and im a fan of them all as prince once said when asked about it...hey it was rock n roll baby...

Man, I used to go to clubs and listen to live music like this back in the day. Listen to how great they sound. I miss that era of music. Thanks for posting!!!
MY GOD THEY ARE SANGING THIS SONG! I have listened to this song several times in the same day: THE TEXTURE AND LAYERS OF THIS SONG ARE JUST CRAZY! Never knew there was a live performance of it. SANG Y'ALL!!!
They dont make music like this anymore and singers dont sing like this anymore and they dont dress, perform or look this good anymore. NO HOMO. Those cats were smooth as freshly fallen snow jack.
This performance was on UnSung, and someone from the group was commenting about the hairdo. Yeah it was one of those WTF moments, it was a wig Teddy decided to wear spur of the moment. I think he said Teddy's hair wouldn't grow or something like that.
But honestly, despite how "interesting" that wig is, he still looked GOOD!!! But as soon as he starts singing, I could care less if he had a Fruit Bowl on his head!! LOL!

It's amazing how you be drawn to singers at a young age without knowing their history. When I was little I came across a white cassette tape with this song/ Whitney Houston's You give good love and somebody else and I've been drawn to this man's voice and I never forgot it and to actually see the LIVE recording of what he looked like singing this is WONDERFUL.
Can we just have 1 YOUNG MAN step up sounding and delivering a song like this PLEASE? I know somebody out there can do it. BUMP TYRESE HE LACKS THAT SMOOTHNESS IN HIS DELIVERY WITH HIS FACIAL EXPRESSIONS it just throws me off.
I THOUGHT I was in luv w/ Luther/Marvin/Robert but when I came upon this VERY MUCH LIVE RECORDING of this BEAUTIFUL BLACK CHOCOLATE MAN that GOD created in HIS IMAGE singing the way he sings this song at the RIPE AGE 22. This has literally blown my mind AWAY and I'm just newly 35 so this was just 2 yrs b4 my existence. This is PURE LOVE singing NO MAN CAN TOUCH THIS. TEDDY WAS AND STILL IS THE MAN FOR THIS STUFF. I couldn't have been calm thru this at all everytime I see this I EVAPORATE.
Teddy was so emotionally into the song he caught the holy ghost @ 4:17. Dammit they just dont make like they use to anymore. im just 22 but im old at heart. 22 year old( the age Teddy was when he made this video) just dont sing like this anymore!!
Again I say: wow!!! I watched this video every day since I discovered it on YouTube wow!! wow!! Wow!!!!! Lord have mercy what a voice. The greatest voice of all times. I am speechless wow!!!!!!!!
Man I remember when i first heard this song, I thought that David Ruffin did a great job till I heard teddy sing it. Such power and emotion. He took this song and made it his and to top it off took the blue notes to a higher and different level. I miss teddys singing and his accident and his death just really saddend me.
This dude poured his heart out in this one! we all know some body right now sayin DAMN ! I remember her... I was so in love...she broke my heart....and I still miss her.... and I am not going to cry.......
This is that feel good for your soul music, but my dude Teddy P. (R.I.P. TO 1 OF THE BEST) look that the guy in the yellow jumpsuit in the movie belly with that hair
I love this song.....just crazy how it makes u feel inside i know exactly how he was feeling but i hope she came back to him to poor his heart out like that
@PawlikSi LMBAO!!! When the video 1st came on & was like Oh lord don' t let that be perm in his head. I'm so mad at the person that did that to his head. WTF?!?!?!?! & more mad that he allowed them to do it. Hilarious but I still love this song & him.
Michelle .... it's been almost 3 years now since u had to leave ... When i listen to this song it really cuts so deep & makes me think of u ... thank u so much for 18 wonderful years & the greatest gift - he's 12 now & still growing ... My heart will forever be yours no matter what - I LOVE YOU FOREVER BABY ... R.I.P.
I saw Harold Melvin at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art about 3 years in Hartford CT, when I worked there. They put on a fabulous performance. Sure wish I could have seen Teddy with them.
I love this song. I remember breaking up with my girl and this is one of the songs I would have playing in the background trying to win her back. It worked too.
Harold Melvin was getting paid, but he had to be hating life during this time. Its his name on the marquee, but all the ladies were loving the lead singer. Hell on earth...

OMG! That voice is soul slaughtered, sensual, and filled with deep passion. The reigning sex symbol of the 70's and 80's....RIP Teddy Pendergrass.

Such a amazing song ,with such a prominent bass part. Does anyone know who the bassist is? ,such tasteful interplay between bass and vocal.

A voice for the ages...power, passion and a proclivity to provocativeness.... Put him on and women don't stand a chance....

Man I remember when i first heard this song, I thought that David Ruffin did a great job till I heard teddy sing it. Such power and emotion. He took this song and made it his and to top it off took the blue notes to a higher and different level. I miss teddys singing and his accident and his death just really saddend me.
