My point is that we cant change the world, but only make do of what we have, we need to fix the problems and unify all people in Australia to one group. I dont think there is anything wrong with flying the Aussie flag anytime. Ive got one at my front door every day of the year. i'll wear aussie flag (as in a top) if i want or show im proud 2 b aussie anyway i choose. It is not wrong 2 show ur proud. I think sometimes, u just gotta do it 2 show forigners that this is Australia not the country they came from n mosques etc r not a part of Australia etc. Remind them that they came 2 our land therefore should fit in with us.

Judging by the comments here, you've really touched a nerve with this video. It seems that many Australians are satisfied to accept the U.S. providing a proxy culture for 364 days of the year, before engaging in flag waving on Australia Day as a means of getting back in touch with and proving their 'Australian-ness'. People demonstrate their pride in a different ways; although it does seem that flag waving is becoming the popular way of doing so. I guess there are worse bandwagons to jump on...

There's a difference between a tradition of raising the Australian flag every morning in remembrance of serving the nation (pride) and people wrapping themselves in the flag for one day of the year, because everyone else seems to be doing it (nationalism). Australians have always raised the flag with pride on occasions such as Anzac Day, Australia Day, Remembrance Day. Flag-waving seems more recent

Every country does it, go to the olympics and chances are most Australians will be wearing flags. It isn't just America that does it. And the kids going trick or treating only do it because it is fun. Australia is turning more into Asia than America.

I've never understood the flag waving = patriotism thing. By that logic a loyalist estate in Northern Ireland would be the most patriotic part of the Country. Religion is usually passed on through generations anyway. An Australian who has a colonist heritage doesn't belong to that culture, for the same reason that Americans don't belong to the Native American culture. Celebrating/acknowledging your countries past is one thing, pretending you are of that culture is another.

@Yakovich I worded that first part wrong. They are expected to abide by rules of course, but there is no rule that says they have to abide by said culture. It is quite the opposite. Living in a democracy means that you are allowed to belong to whatever culture you like, it is freedom.
There is a Muslim, Asian, Jewish, African culture etc etc in pretty much any Commonwealth or Western country. I've never read any newspaper that claims one MUST be part of the culture of the country they live in.
