  • It always amazes me that some of his best work was when he was in the worst shape. This stuff really penetrates.

  • Johnny is really obnoxious in this interview. It must have been difficult for June to put up with that for so many years. John Carter Cash has said that John continued his addictions into the 80's but there was a time during the seventies when he was clean.

  • As laudable as their intentions are, Johnny really does not need any help with his songs - and certainly not this kind of help.

  • this is an epic vid... Is there a Rainbow Quest DVD set? I love Seegers demeanor and intimate knowledge of all his guests work. There should be more show like this on TV now days. I guess Jools Holland is the closest we get to it. Would have loved to see them do Jackson.

Does any one know where to find the full episode with Blackie McGhee and Sonny Terry?

  • The Seeger show was actually filmed in Newark, NJ at the old PBS studios housed inside Symphony Hall at the time. I saw Cash perform at a sellout show a day or two later at the Hall and he was in worse shape than he is here - he was so pale that they kept a red or blue spotlight during his entire performance and he sat on a stool throughout the show. As bad a shape he was in that night you couldn't keep your eyes off him. He was THAT electric even at his worst!

  • johnny got his bootss off

  • great

  • a true gem

  • Johnny Cash sang this song in Fargo, ND in memory of Peter La Farge. I don't remember if it was the day La Farge died or the day he was buried. I think it was 1965. The Madison Square Garden recording seems much the same. I still get goose bumps.

  • i just bought the johnny cash at madison square garden cd and heard this song for the first time yesterday. i still have chills.

  • Some things in life need to be preserved. This is one of those things.

  • he reminds me of being high in front of my parents when I was younger. He is so bombed out of his mind. June Carter is a very strong woman.

  • fight those demons johnny

  • What an awesome find, thank you for posting!!!

  • This is Ben Perkins writing. What a great joy it is to watch Pete Seeger, Johnny and June. I have seen Johhny in concert three times inAust... but I have only seen Pete in dreams... which is a great thing, but to have missed out on singing along with Pete live in concert is a life disappointment. This is a great and imporant song. American govts are a sad disgrace lacking compassion...sound familiar!

  • If you ever get your hands on the Johnny Cash Show, you can see Pete Seeger's dazzling and hair-raising appearance on it. Just a gorgeous moment of rebellion and poetry.

  • zeahbella, Petes still with us, so you still have that opportunity to sing with Pete.

  • Too bad you didn't grow up in Chicago in the '60's, on the near north side, by N. Wells, the area known as "Old Town" where folk music abounded!!

  • what a gem ,raw and powerful.

  • This is a part of history. these were the exact words in the treaty, "As long as the grass shall gorw, as long as the river flows, as long as the sun shall shine. It is a shame that the legacy of white & Indian was so dishonored.

  • three musical icons together at the same place....what an awesome memory!!

  • A moving performance at any rate.

  • Look under hes eyes! He havent got much sleep lately!

  • Stoned or not -- this video is as great as the studio recording which is on "Bitter Tears" -- my ever first Johnny Cash LP I bought in 1967 -- forty years ago!!!

  • this is great!

  • sure johnny was really stoned ! but what "presence" (i'm french, sorry), and what a bucket of love !

  • i thought johnny would pass out before the show was over. he is stoned but can still put out a good performance. rip john and june, love you.

  • These are awesome! What a surprise to find them together. Made my day. Bruce S. was really late o this particular table.

  • Thanks for this Two... great

  • thank you for these. Delightful.I'm guessing Johnny disagreed with Seeger's comment about a folk song being like an old pair of shoes in part 4, since he's removed his here!
