SCTV and SNL did early spoofs of Andy Griffith Show that were both a lot funnier. SCTV had Rick Moranis as the "Merv" Griffith hybrid character (I think this is the first time anyone ever did Andy Griffith Show impersonations) and SNL had host Ron Howard as a Walking Tall type Opie who returns from 'Nam to bring order back to Mayberry after Aunt Bee starts a prostitution ring. Andy Griffith made a cameo where he tells Ron Howard to "hit Aunt Bee upside the head like I used to do."
