I have seen John in concert at least once a year for more years then I care to count and he has never failed to dedicate this to Steve. It always adds to this amazing song.
I didn't realize that the 2nd gent is Steve Goodman. Sheesh! He had hair!! But the smile gave it away...during Souvenirs he was smiling like a kid on Christmas morn. Great video, thx very much for posting it.
Never heard Mr. Goodman solo (Girl I love). I must say the song really blew me away, like hearing Dylan, or Neil Young, etc. for the very first time, I will take the "folkies" any day over the Amy Winehouses, Lady GaGa's, bla, bla, bla!
I have been listening to John Prine since the 70's, when I was living in New Orleans he played on the rverboat regurarly, I never missed a show. I never saw him when he did not put forth 100% he is one of the greatest songwriters I know. Never had the pleasure of meeting or hearing Steve Goodman. I wish I had takeen the time, he was a great artist. Anthony Skeen
What an homage to have heard this guy play guitar, even though I'd never heard of him for most of my life. He was great! And I feel bad about his premature death. Now I'm STILL kicking myself for taking up the guitar!
When I went to see Steve John most likely show up and if you went to see John Steve would show up. To see them was a royal treat. Love John and miss Steve dearly
Watching Steve play is such a pleasure. Just watching his face glow. Such a smile. He never seems so happy playing as he does when he is playing with his brother John..
originally from Chicago ... got to see them play this together at (Somebody Else's Troubles - I think) awesome song ... can feel the wistful sadness ...
John Prine and Steve Goodman are National treasures. History will show that.. I miss Steve and we are blessed John is still here.... Shit this just make me cry to see them play together again....
sometimes you catch lightning in a bottle,John and Steve were such good friends and carried that onto the stage,Johnny Cash and Kris K. had the same magic.
I was lucky enough to see Steve play twice. I used to refer to him as the little guy with the big guitar. :) Due to poor health towards the end of his life, Steve was forced to cancel a show I had tickets to Well not exactly cancel--John Prine came and played instead. The two of them were buddies til the end, and to this day--I saw him just a few months ago--John mentions Steve's name when he plays Souvenirs. Thanks for posting this video, it's wonderful to see the two of them together.
I had the good fortune to attend a backyard BBQ in Evanston, IL back in the early 70's at Joan And Tyler Wilson's house. John Prine and Steve Goodman were there and put on quite an amazing set of music on the front porch that day. Good Times, Great People.
I saw JP and SG at the Paramount Theater in Austin, TX on March 5 1982, the night John Belushi died. John Prine dedicated "Sam Stone" to his old buddy. Brilliant show. R.I.P. Steve Goodman. He was one of those dudes you could tell was a genuinely nice guy from a mile away.
This is a brilliant poem. I remember John Prine when he looked like this. Steve Goodman was still alive too. I had the good fortune to meet Prine back then, 5 years after the fall of Hanoi. He is a Vietnam vet. Look for his song entitled "Sam Stone". When he sang that the audience was entranced. Prine has always been sad. He used to drink a lot when preparing to give a live show. He used to talk tough but he is a real soft-hearted guy who has written some great songs.
John's playing a Guild D-35, mahagony back and sides, spruce top. I have a 1971 D-35 that I've been playing for close to 40 years. I could tell you a story about every mark, seed burn, belt buckle scratch and crack in the wood. It sounds great - much like a Gibson J-45. I got a new Martin HD-28 a few years ago. It's nice, more bottom end and louder than the Guild but each guitar has its own appeal. Don't know what make Steve is playing but it sounds good too.
@pnp522 Right on! Would like to hear the D-50. It would have the inlaid Guild logo on the headstock. My D-35 has a decal. I've owned my Guild for just about 40 years - many a John Prine composition has been played on the old box during those four decades. I saw him perform live in Halifax a few years ago. If I had seen this video before that great show, I would have taken the guitar with me and had him sign it.
"I hate grave yards and old pawn shops, cause they always bring me tears. Can't forgive the way they rob me of my childhood souvenirs." Classic John Prine lyrics, brilliant in their simplicity, connecting universal images with deep reflection on the things that matter in life. I love this guy's music.
I use to see Steve Goodman all the time at The Main Point in Bryn Mawr ,Pa in the last 70's. Just him and his guitar and he was AMAZING. No one was like him, before or since. RIP, Steve
Lovely watching Steve's face in this - he was a fine man. Had a nice chat with him riding in to the Winnipeg Folk Festival in the last year of his life. Then he hopped up on stage and held 10,000 people in the palm of his hands for 22 minutes.

Having listened to this song for almost 40 years, it has meanings that have changed over the years. Best version of Prine onthis song, thanks Goodman!
Saw John Prine on Letterman the other night ... I wonder how many kids born since the middle 70's know who Steve Goodman, Gary P. Nunn, Jerry Jeff Walker or Ray Wylie Hubbard are??? ... to name few.
Damn! Steve Goodman was a one-man-band! What a beautiful voice, incredible guitar. This love song was such an incredible addition to Souvenirs with John Prine. Souvenirs was obviously a product of Steve's lyrical genius. Every song Prine produced with Goodman was priceless. You're the Girl I Love is beyond compare.
Steve Goodman was one of the very best composers. Does somebody have his song called "Door Number Three" that they can upload? I listen to selected You Tube songs at the end of the day, and it would be fab to listen to that one. I have the album (yes, album) it's on, but I have no idea how to put it on You Tube. Help?!
Steve Goodman's guitar was simply awesome; both Souvenirs and You're the Girl I Love. He was an incredible talent, lyrically and instrumentally. What a loss, but he managed to cram a lifetime of living into a few short years before he died. A lesson to be learned living life in the present moment to its fullest extent. The Souvenirs audience sure looks dated lol. You're the Girl I Love couldn't be more perfect. His voice reminds me of Cat Stevens.
I was friends with John Prine and Steve Goodman, and had spent a lot of time with both of them — but never at the same time. So in 1974, I went to the Philly Folk Festival to see them play together. I camped out with an old girlfriend the first night, then shared a motel room with Stevie the next two nights. (This video wasn't from that festival, but it brings back the memories of how great they were together.)
@WhatWouldTubeDo Just want to be clear about this, so no one gets the wrong idea about what I wrote. Goodman had a spare bed in his motel room, so he invited me to stay with him. Yes, separate beds. By the way, I travelled from Minneapolis to Philadelphia to see Goodman and Prine perform together. As it turned out, I got to hang with all of the musicians after-hours in the motel, where the jamming all took place.

goosebumps.... this is one of the best performances ive seen on youtube! they have such a good chemistry between them, and goodmans solos are amazing!
haven't we all been there at one point or another? i've been listening to souveniers for over 30 years. it gets better every time i hear it. caper diem, nothing lasts for ever
im only 14 and i listen to Green Gay and Nine Inch Nails and even i can tell that this song is just the most amazing thing ever! its so beautifull!! i love this song so much!
@coolmolldoll Awesome. Don't stop digging. The radio is poison. Real music is played in tiny bars. Hopefully it still will be by the time you can enter tiny bars. Until then, keep looking online. Go check out Hank 3, but he's not on the same level as Prine. I guarantee he's a fan tho. Also, I'm pretty sure Green Gay was a typo, but I'd like to wish it was more of a Freudian Slip!!!! Billie Joe's a hack & just uses pop culture & CNN to make more & more $ Don't believe what the TV says about USA.
I originally came here for "Souvenirs,," but now keep coming back for "Say It In Private" - it is such a wonderful version, much better than the studio cut. Love it. :)
I love this song so much. This is one of my favorites. Great song but depressing on a level that is just off the charts for some. I don't know the 2nd song on the video Steve Goodman sings.
@craig4252 The second song is "Say It In Private", which was the title cut from an L.P. that Goodman made in the 70's, which was very good by the way. Damofino I sure miss the talented Steve Goodman!
Thanks! Only saw them together once (at a concert in Ann Arbor that was billed only as Steve) but that was amazing.

All the snow has turned to water,
Christmas days have come and gone.
Broken toys and faded colours are all that's left to linger on.
I hate graveyards and old pawn shops,
For they always bring me tears.
I can't forgive the way they robbed me of my childhood souvenirs.
Memories, they can't be boughten.
They can't be won at carnivals for free.
Well it took me years to get those souvenirs,
And i don't know how they slipped away from me.

Of my sweetheart's souvenirs.

John was right about one thing. Steve had a way of picking this song that made his sound like a better guitar player.

As it turned out, I got to hang with all of the musicians after-hours in the motel, where the jamming all took place.

jhurt; I think Goodman's guitar may be a Selmer/Maccaferri type, like Django played

@thelizinator yes i know...hense the comment...
oh and now im 15...but still! :D

You're The Girl I Love
swa1959 1 year ago
@craig4252 The second song is "Say It In Private", which was the title cut from an L.P. that Goodman made in the 70's, which was very good by the way. Damofino I sure miss the talented Steve Goodman!
