I knew Ray Davies was a genius after hearing "Too Much On My Mind" and " A Well Respected Man" . This was an incredible time for the Kinks when they had tunes like "Dead End Street", "I'm Not Like Everbody Else" and "Waterloo Sunset", but were banned in the U.S. for 5 years- for refusing to pay the musician union dues and punching out a union boss on a tour of the U.S. In 1965. Way to go Ray! I have always hated unions...
Ray Davies is one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Though, don't know if others will agree with me on this, but this sounds like the kind of melody that the Dave Clark Five would have done. I could be wrong. I often am, you know. Face to Face was a phenomenal album for its time. It still is. Ray's songwriting was really starting to take off on this album. God save the Kinks forever.
@fantasykiss08 why do have to say one band is better than the other. Just enjoy them all, it doesnt matter. I hate when people start a big BS argument on who is better and why. We all have opinions and good music is good music. thats all htere is to it. Just shut the hell up and stop hating for no reason.
@7777srd , Yeah, furthermore, I'll put Dave's guitar picking over Ray's strumming on the same plate as any done by John and George - there's a sort of "ticket to Ride" quality to it - fucking brilliant!
@stpierreorama I think u r missing the point....sure the beatles were great, and they alot of ink thru the yrs, the kinks were just as good and got little ink........I love the beatles, but the kinks music hits closer to my heart than the beatles
@ethifanman The KInks got a lot of press coverage in the U.S. from '64-65, and got a lot of attention in the UK as well. If you read old issues of British and American music magazines from that time, you'll see it.
Without doubt. Face to Face is in every way a classic. This tune is top drawer. In many respects this is the first concept album. Just terrific and probably the best liner notes of all time.
I completely agree! I find that this is the most solid Kinks album. Each song works and flows together perfectly, and like you said there's never any need to skip a track!

The Kinks music from 1965 to 1968 was,IMO,the best of all the Brit bands.....Kinda Kinks,Face to Face,Something Else, and the perfect Village Green.

The Kinks are the Dickens of Ditty, well beyond the rest of the meagre Rock genre.

@stpierreorama Well said, stp. I hate those arguments. They don't solve anything and are all based on personal preference anyway.

Seems that the past won't let to you live your life.
By me. I'll try to forget with my horses and the ranch here.
Try to be a cowboy.

Great, really great.
I see the summer of 66 in Amsterdam, our little home, the backdoors open to the balcony, the music of my older brother and me.
And, even after more then 40 years the lyrics are still true.
There's too much on my mind...

Put this on an orange-and-yellow swirl Capitol 45 with "The Beatles" as the artist, and you have another # 1.
