Hi Vic, "SUPER" what a beautiful feel you have in this blues and what a sound man you really cave us a treat here. This is a blues of course played in your unique style I can play over and over again and enjoy the first until the last. Just running through your jazzguts website to see were I can polish it a bit, keep up the good work and 5* it is, Greets, John (Willemstad)
Sorry john for my late reply, somehow this one didn't show up in my YT mail. Until today I didn't see it,great comment. Please check my newest tunes"The Thrill is Gone" and Glucklig tell me what you think,Vic.
Amazing! What a great tone. Your playing is impeccable as usual. I love the diminished runs and your use of space using everything from long sustained notes to those very fast repetitive phrases. One thing that I think would have put the cherry on top of the sundae would be some silent spots. As a painter I am conscious of how an expanse of nothing makes the next event more profound. Just a thought. I like the physicality you get in certain parts. As you know, Longwinding is a master at this.
Thanks Lance, I'll meditate on it, of course you're right ,less is more . I think I was hearing too much in my head and got "over enthusiastic" and I know Frank (Longwinding) ,great musician and a good friend, just like us we have nice discussions about Music he's such a friendly, generous guy, great this building criticism that's so positive, that's what friends are for Lance, thanks. Vic.
Thanks Roselyne18, I value everyone's opinion however this guitar and sound transcends the mood and spirit of my Blues, I love all my guitars, they're all very different,X'mas greetings Vic.
Hey, hey, hey, Rosie, don't you DARE to take away that strat from Vic ;-) He makes her cry & weep & sing and he puts me in that cheerful melancholy mood only the blues can create in my soul.
But of course you're right, he's fantastic at the acoustic guitar, too!
Sorry Jogi, man somehow I didn't see this comment until now, great comment and this Strat will go with me in my coffin.(lol) wanted to wish you a great Xmas and great New-year full of inspiration and lot's of great Music, greetings Vic.
Hi Jazzguts ,please tell me your hardware guitar , what kind of Pickups seymours alnicos ,keramics or ?? and wich amp you use ,thank you ,have nice advent times
Hi hans I use seymour alnico's and at the bridge a Seth lover humbucking (seymour Duncan) for recording facilities my signal goes through a mxr compressor and then through A sansamp classic pre-amp,all analog Stuff,X,mas greetings Vic.
Hermano, my respect for you is mutual, you're a Bluesman in Heart and Soul,I love your phrasing and sound, the LesPaul is your guitar however I think an Es335 would also fit you neatly, there aren't many with such a sweat Blues-Heart, I play Jazz and now I return to the Blues as my home-base, may I invite you to my new Vid: Sunshine of your love, greet Raimundo Amador for me(fine player and wonderful guy) Saludos Vic.
Thanks Franco, glad you checked out this one, I was just improvising the afternoon away and this take came out real sweat, I work in the Jazz way, jam a few takes and choose the one I like most. Guess you'll get the grip of pentatonics and other scales when you study harmony(chords and relative scales),if you have questions of theory I'll try to help out, just ask, greets Vic.
The Sky is crying, Why? Because Vic is tugging at its heart strings with "Passion" that even the Angels of heaven weep at the sound that flow from a genius like you. That's why the Sky is crying for the air waves have been blessed with the talent and brilliance you bring to us. The Joy, Delight, and the enrichment of the "Blues" Peace be with you my brother. Sorry, I've been out of the Loop for a bit, I am catching up to the music and E-mails, due to health issues.
Thanks Henry, What a poetic comment, from your Heart my friend. I'll keep the Jazz and Blues Alive as long as live, I'm from that generation that was inspired and grew up with the Blues-giants. Hope your health is going better and you will pass great X'mas Chritmas days with your family, blessings to you and your family Amigo, saludos desde Hollanda.
hi Vic, great playing as ever! if I wanted to be critical, though, I'd say that it might be just a bit too "tasteful" and elegant for this kind of a SRVesque tune something that I sometimes attribute to Robben Fords playing as well. I personally like that emotional "rawness" Stevie used to put in his way of playing and which coupled with sheer sophistication and sound theoretical knowledge Scott Henderson (as one of very few) is doing so well when he is playing the blues.
Hi vladgromek, I agree it's a matter of taste , I know what you mean,Stevie was a great emotional player without saying anything further bout his theoretic background,it's not necessary. Indeed I've heard this critique often from Blues purists who dis-like each hint at Jazz harmony and phrasing.(I'm not saying you're one) the mix of Jazz and Blues is my thing (and Robbens too) which results in another approach, Scott's playing (listen real good)has much Jazz hints as well, greets Vic.
hi Vic, I think I understand you perfectly well and I actually appreciate your approach very much. and yes - I am certainly not a blues purist even though it may have seemed so. If I were to name my influences I had to start with Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery, carry on with Jimmy (Bryant) and Jimi (Hendrix) to finally get to - say - Scott Henderson and Oz Noy via Larry Carlton and others. I often feel myself kind of suspended between all of them - never reaching any one by far, though...
Interesting discussion vladgromek, well I think the main thing in the end is after periods of assimilation to try and do your own thing as a "free-thinker". I see many guys caught up in the Idea: I want to sound like......? Of course I've also done my share of homework, but I mainly did this analyzation trying to follow some ones thinking process. In the end you'll have to think and feel music for yourself that's our ultimate goal, I think, greets Vic.
I guess that's what it is ultimately all about: to do your own thing musically and draw from a variety of influences while not trying to be someone else. but of course: there are times when just happen to feel a bit Stevie-ish or Wes-ish or Scott-ish (no pun intended...) and then this mood may become audible in the way you play. nothing wrong here I'd say you gotta know who you really are, though...
a new Jazzguts fav for me that was outstanding Vic nothing like a good 4 and a half minutes of improvised Jazzguts blues to warm you up on a cold and miserble Canadian December night
Thanks Woodytfc, I enjoyed playing this, and I liked the inspiring statement Robben Ford made: Blues isn't just a "thing" you've got to love it to play it,that's exactly the way I feel about it. Better don't touch it if you ain't in this state of mind, friendly Vic.
I never realised that I could use a minor7b5 chord anywhere in the MAJOR blues form!!!!! Wonderful!! I also found an alternative- F#+5 chord (F#, Bb, D notes), and end it with a ˝cute˝ H6 chord (F#, B, D#,G# notes.) Would that work ass well? Please don´t be to hard on mee, I´m still learning how to be a good guitarist!!!! All the best to you, my friend. ~ Daniel
Great Terry, what a compliment from such a generous Lady, who always chooses her creative warm words for expression, just like my Blues , I treat her with respect and what do I get in return, a song in my Heart for the world, there's such beauty in the Blues, Hug Vic.
Hoi Vic ,thats the way to play the blues,I love it, it can not better,my compliments,by the way Vic,Ive also a new clip :White Christmas;,I hope you like it use a headphone,Kees.
Thanks Kees, always welcome man, you know I love the Blues, I'll be over right away and give your song a good listen and comment, one moment Maestro, cheers Vic.
The last chord is D#m7b5 (D# F# A C#) as a substitute chord for B79 , the Em7b5 is a halfstep infront of the first chord, resolving down wards. Man wish YT was around when I started playing would of eased up a lot of Stuff for me, had to learn the hard way, lifting the needle of records.
I was wondering if I was wrong about calling the last two chords "half diminished chords", I have been studying some basic 4 voices chords and I think that is one pattern for half dim chords. I just want to know if they are half dim or not. Thank you very much
Yes, I was wondering that, too. I heard of that minor7b5 chords, but half diminished...confusing a bit...I guess that last D#m7b5 could also be described as a B7/9 chord with a bass in the third degree?????????
Mondoinc, I think they're half-dim, I see it simple: take a dominant chord and build a half-dim on the third and you're there. if you analyze the notes of half-dim in relation to a dominant chord you'll see it includes the 3 7 9 5. In this voicing (which I use here) the Root is omitted but if you place the bass-note(root) of the dominant under this voicing ,you get a dom79 chord, conclusion: these chords are interchangeable once the correct bas notes are played, greets Vic.
Thanks Daniel, that's true however there are more things, Taste, historic-knowledge of the style (knowing your Roots by many hours of listening sessions and absorption of that feel) all the best Vic.
Madguitarist I'm playing in B7, start off using the Blues scale on B ( b d e f f# a) this fits the chords, later try combining the 3 different mixolydian modes(B7-E7-F#7),so every time the chord changes the mode changes, this is a more complicated (Jazz) way of playing, success Vic
Thanks Justin, I was just thinking how many guys are sitting now writing down my chops, I got mails from several Jazz guitarists who said they'd copied whole sections from my Standards, you're very welcome glad I can give you something worthwhile,Vic.
Thanks Edwin, glad you enjoyed, well I guess this made you get the Blues too Brother, thanks for always being here Amigo mio, Saludos desde Hollanda,Vic.
We all agree with Robben Ford! I've been playing this kind of blues in jam sessions every Sunday night since last year. I was in the rhythm section band for all the guitarrists who went to jam with us.
Sweet tone you got there Vic. Nice to hear these latest blues tunes. Always a pleasure seeing you play. Im still practing a lot my friend. With a bit of luck I'll be able to post something worthy here one day.
Dank Wouter, met dit weer krijg je wel de Blues dan ga ik weer lekker aan de snaren trekken. hij is hier in goede aarde gevallen aan de hoeveelheid reacties te zien, leuk hoor, het ga je goed tot gauw,Vic.
Vic Cool and Hot Blues,.. Hey ! liked those Jimmy Page triplets at about 1: 57 to 1:60.. And then Jimi's Red House 6ths and 3rds and also a Robben Ford 's sweet tones..
You really are channeling the vibe of SRV on this one. I get the feeling that you reached deep into your bag of blues tricks on this one. It seems you put more feeling and emotion into this one. I think you mentioned that to know almost every other type of music, you need to know the blues, and brother you know dem blues!
Thanks Rich, yeah you're right, when I started jamming,I had to think of the timeless thing of the Blues, how it inspired so many players, how many forms it has taken from very simple to complex. One thing is clear it's a style that will be around for quite a while to come, for me it will remain an inspiration, greets Vic.
Sabine guess you're right, since the day I was born I have it, and all the time it was whispering; Let me out, want to see daylight and "Cry with the Sky" Now I understand why Jimi Hendrix sung: s'cuse me while I kiss the Sky. Big hug Vic.
Some notes from hell here, Victor ! There are beautiful chromatisms. Excellent versatility btw (just one small criticism : maybe sometimes a bit too much, I'd give sometimes more spaces in order to rest a little, the sky is just crying).
Hey Vic, awesome stuff as always, making that guitar sing like the best! Can't get enough of the tone on your fingers and that bridge pickup, what pickup is that anyways? :)
Thanks frank, those are the triads of the octotonic scale, thanks for your visit Amigo, you're always big ears my friend, hearing everything, greetings Vic.

hi Vic, great playing as ever! if I wanted to be critical, though, I'd say that it might be just a bit too "tasteful" and elegant for this kind of a SRVesque tune something that I sometimes attribute to Robben Fords playing as well. I personally like that emotional "rawness" Stevie used to put in his way of playing and which coupled with sheer sophistication and sound theoretical knowledge Scott Henderson (as one of very few) is doing so well when he is playing the blues.

We all agree with Robben Ford! I've been playing this kind of blues in jam sessions every Sunday night since last year. I was in the rhythm section band for all the guitarrists who went to jam with us.
OscarPetersonFan 2 years ago
Good thing Oscar giving support to all the jammin guys, like Robben says a good rhythm foundation puts a smile on every ones face, greets Vic.

Victor,
You really are channeling the vibe of SRV on this one. I get the feeling that you reached deep into your bag of blues tricks on this one. It seems you put more feeling and emotion into this one. I think you mentioned that to know almost every other type of music, you need to know the blues, and brother you know dem blues!
Thanks for the great tune.

sunriverperson 2 years ago
