As we can see by the size of the dipols , this system runs only in the higher part of HF lets say 20 to 30 MHZ something like that. It still is an impressive installation i wonder what the amplifier that feeded this array looks like...........and how the signal is feeded to the dipols ....... some 10 MW EIRP was produced , but it looks like the antenna has quiet some gain. How much signal was feeded to the antenna ?

i remember these signals in 27 mhz band , they could be really strong, here in the south east part of the Netherlands. I wonder if they could spot a big plane high in the sky above europe ............. because for radar you need a return signal , if this signal has to go over the horizon, it willbe distorted. You won't see anything.

Sattelites will do the far more accurate, as i can see it , this was an expensive mistake, that only made lots of HF intefference.

@blepblep681114 Depends on how far apart the transmit and receive arrays are. These were 60 km apart. And the Russian government launched satellites in the mid 80's for defense, but most of them failed shortly after launch, and prevented them from being effective enough to accurately use them for missile launch detection. One of them actually almost caused a launch because the sun hit it a certain way and triggered a multi-missle attack from the USA that didn't happen.

I remember the woodpecker signal as a teenager in the 70s and 80s. I first heard about it in school. My teacher said it was for over over the air power transmission others said it was mind control I remember hearing it every time I turned on my shortwave radio.I hated it. In a nutshell, Duga-3 is a whopping big OTH (Over The Horizon) radar array.

It was designed and built as an early warning system to detect incoming ballistic missiles from the West.

Considering its position it's ironic that the biggest nuclear disaster to befall Chernobyl came from within, when the nuclear power station's reactor 4 blew its top.

As a kid I was an amateur radio enthusiast in the 70's and 80's and I was particularly fascinated by the Russian Woodpecker which was a bit of a mystery at the time.

Both the picture and the sound on this video ARE DUGA-3

It couldn't be DUGA-1 as that was experimental and like the prototype DUGA-2 pointed the wrong way (East) and both were very low power.

Both were out of action by the time the fully functional DUGA-3 was switched on, pointing West.

Well, Prypiat is the town to the West of Chernobyl. Most of the power plant staff lived there.

Duga-3 is located South of Chernobyl and is within the "zone of alienation", the exclusion zone set up since the Chernobyl disaster.

DUGA-3 was used as an early warning tracking system for inbound missiles.

Probably so as to cause minimum disturbance, the prototype and test models (DUGA-1 and DUGA-2) both faced East and the final working model (DUGA-3) faced West (towards where the perceived threat was thought to come from during the cold war) and it still does face West. Though it is no longer used for its original purpose the array still stands.
