@blackbart316 well, that's fine. You know the same could be said about Cliff too... He never was great back up vocalist either, just an insane bass player. All I know is when they were auditioning bass players, they never had a mic in front them and wanting to hear their singing abilities... So if Metallica didn't care, why does everybody else!!? They weren't looking for a great back up vocalist... They wanted a killer bass player. And that's what they got!

@nordmartv Well, yes, but my take on that is, he blew his voice out over 20 years ago. Not many people are the same after that (Harry Nilsson being the extreme case.) So, James really has to be careful singing, especially live. Also the fact that Jame isn't 23 years old anymore. I think he's doing just fine provided the circumstances. Hell, even Dave Mustaine is sounding pretty rough nowadays.

@ColdHeartedMan1979 I agree with you. But I hate his new vocal style (his high pitched voice). For example, in 2007 and 2008 he's singing was much better. Look his live performance Sad But True in London. That was really heavy. Not this. James can sing, but he won't.

Reason why great bassist like Burton and Steve Harris use fingers. Perhaps you use a pick on your GF as well..they sound nicer when you use your fingers though!

Cliff Burton along with John Entwistle (who sometimes *GOD FORBID* used a pick - listen to "My Generation") are my fave bassists of all time! I use my FINGERS on my girlfriend, and on my (Rickenbacker) bass. *Neither complain*.

Are you trying to say people like John Paul Jones, Paul McCartney, Carol Kaye, Chris Squire, etc. and so on, aren't "good" bassists?

For people who don't know who John Marshall is he used to be the guitar tech for Kirk Hamett until he joined the band metal church in 1989. Played guitar for the band when Hetfield broke his wrist skateboarding during part of the 86 tour while James recovered. Also in 1991 when James got burnt during the Pyro accident in Montreal
