  • 7:30 It may sound it, but it is not hollow :)

  • 5:40 More Music Please

  • johnny cash what the?

  • Collin won't be doing any more videos until he finds a way to hear our thoughts! O.o

  • I have that amp

  • i did this to my ukulele:D

  • You are the man!!!

  • good job!

  • also may i get a parts list?

  • @MrJoypad570 didn't he show and tell the parts names near the beginning of the vid?

  • @dadautube

yeah. just to lazy to write them down.

  • Could the circuit for this be used to make a passive bass pickup into an active one? Or two?

  • the Other Stuff was the best part.

  • Please make own channel !!!!!!

  • Will you please get your own channel I could watch you talk about electronics all day even on things I already know you are a good teacher.

  • "uF"?

try "µF", it is Micro Farad, not U*** Farad

  • @GegoXaren he knows that, its for the people who arent electronics savy, and uF is a common notation for microfarad too

  • cool.......

  • @srikanth3222 I call it "MIKE" lol. cant remember where i picked that up from lol

  • interesting and funny ending!

  • I believe the transistor is "backwards," with drain and source switched, although it actually wouldn't matter for that particular transistor.

  • His head is a super star drummer lol

  • First off, I think I like the sideburns as much as the microphone.

  • Use it as a throat mic? Can you test it and post a quility vid on it? Thanks for all these wondereful ideas. I am thinking about getting MakeMagazene because of these series.

  • I found the same schematics with different component values on this website: till. com/articles/GuitarPreamp/

You can also find some explanation of the circuit there.

  • Thats a very catchy head beat!

  • i think i'll stick with an electric guitar ;)

  • A door so that when someone knocks the door bell rings ! :P

  • It's Mr. Smith from the Matrix :)

  • Wow! the posibilities are endless.. WAY cool ! Thanx

  • COLLIN, Y U NO GET YOUR OWN CHANNEL??!!?!?!?

  • Name of song: folsom prison blues, by johnny cash

  • please the name of the first music .

  • That nerd's loosing his hair

  • @AlexxSR

That nerd has a bigger income than you will ever have.

  • @ToServeArmadillo LOL, I don't give a fuck, I probably get more pussy in a week than he'll ever get in his entire life. And making 78k/year is enough for me.

  • @AlexxSR

Your story is both interesting and completely legit.

  • Comment removed

  • @ToServeArmadillo Troll.

  • hi i tried to put the circuit on a pc sound card and it worked but can you tell me what are specifications of the piezo ?? please reply

  • That would be creepy if we cold hear you thoughts. Any bodies thoughts reallly

  • Collin... Why would you not put an on of switch on the board? You silly goose!

  • Colin, this is awesome... i rolled laughing on the floor when you used the comb :).. keep it up

  • i have too listen j cash now.

  • lol ur a good guitar player. :)

  • You make some cool stuff, but I bet your neighbors aren't too fond of you sometimes.... :-)

  • cool idea just this guys face makes me mad. fuck dude get some pussy

  • Could this possibly be used to make a homemade throat mic?

  • Thank you for not pronouncing it pie-zo like the food. You got the drain and source of the JFET backwards on the diagram though... (not that it's massively important for JFET)

  • Nice video, but why use a transistor amp instead of a neatly packaged amplifier IC like an LM386?

  • Contact mikes are pretty good for listening through walls with. Although, perhaps that project is too "evil" for Make Magazine :)

  • I've made all the circuit.

The only problem is that I cant find the MPF-102 Transistor. In the store where I bought all the components they said me that I can use a BF-245 Transistor.

    is that true?

  • @sunrise93pool I found a bunch on ebay.. I purchased 30 of them for around $5

  • where will i get all these accesories :(

  • @BrutalBeastify online! Digikey, ebay, etc

  • Legit

  • You look British :3

  • is the circuit necessary???? because ive seen videos where they just hook it up to wire and the amp and it works fine.

  • MUSIC is LUV Youtube/REGGIEWRITEOUS

  • crazy cool!

  • Comment removed

  • woh DIY cool!

  • hahahaha, uf capacitor. k ohms. Do you not know units?

  • HAHA WTF.

  • watch?v=ysNd4QGOgeY

  • @braselton94 tnx man

  • hows about some hairclub for men

  • Would I have to use different resistor values if I chose a different power source, say 11.1 volts?

  • @PawnozTV Yes, but you can do the math, or there are several apps on various smartphones that can do the calculations for you.

  • mine set on fire lol bad soldiring

  • what the name of thing after battery clip?

  • WHAT IS THAT SONG AT 5:46

  • @kaspar10000 I believe that is Folsom Prison Blues (ALSO HEARD IN 2005's WALK THE LINE)

  • Very nice :D

Can you please make a video to show us how to programm a attiny 13?

I never manage to make it work :'(

  • @megacier

You must be lame since even I can do that. :)

  • @megacier try using sparkfuns pocket avr programmer it may simplify things, or the insturcatble/matt richardsons video on how to do it with your arduino

  • this good idea for drum

  • @sadllebronc thats what i was thinking

  • @JUSTTH1SGUY yap , so a nice drum set come with between 5/6 piece plus cymbals , then just analyze how to make 6/7 piezo by one circuit board , then will have a nice acoustic system for drum ... I don't know if piezo will have good sound how a mic you know , but piezo sound in this video is pretty nice ... I will try piezo with circuit board in my drum and maybe a upload on youtube for show this idea to somebody else .. well that's all .. see ya ..

  • @sadllebronc i just went ballz out and i all ready have 3 piazo circuits made and i i'm working on a driver board i might post a vid too

  • actaully collin, all that is need to electrify and acustic is the piezo element, 2 wires and a 1/4 female jack, ive made 2, but could u make a acusticpickup that has the volume control

  • One of the most interesting projects on here!!

  • I made one I had all of the parts but the transistor and the 4.7uf cap other then that it was free. I did not put my Piezo disk on a cable like how you did. I just wanted to try it out. I will finish it tomorrow and put it into a nice case. I use a 3.5mm microphone cable so I can hook it to my computer and record sounds. I might post a video using it on my trombone if it works.

  • Cool. :)

  • OR you could just get an acoustic electric guitar to save you time.

  • I think it makes you able to here other peoples thoughts cuz thats what i was thinking.

  • 1. Would a typical electric guitar patch cord substitute for the RCA cable?

    2. for the 1/4 inch jack, is mono or stereo needed? I have a stereo one and I heard you can use it for mono.. is this true?

    Thanks

  • ur head sounds hollow

  • is the circuit really necessary?

  • @obedm503 yes

  • Sweet, might be good for a recording studio!!! Heck, you could make some music with just a comb if you pluck the teeth just right!

  • Dope

  • Enercell! Yeah.... :P

  • This is so freak'in awesome, it's not even funny. :)

  • Cool project Collin- my guitarist is gonna love this- passin' it on to him. Have a great holiday! -Deek

  • "my head" ... lol

  • he must like johnny cash

  • Collin, can you use the contact mike to use it as a neck microphone for a walkie talkie? You know, for when you have to much noise around you to isolate your voice enough...

  • i hope he dies realizing he is not engineer

  • Comment removed

  • From the title I thought were going to make a piezo disk. Aww.

Well, let's see where that other link goes. ^_^

  • all radioshack parts!

now i feel like a nerd.

  • you DA MAN Collin

  • Could a potenciometer and a switch be added to the squematic?

  • My head... :D

  • What's that thing (like a disc)? I can't distinguish. My English listening in not good yet!

  • @kelocowebtk piezoelectric mic.

  • @kelocowebtk wikipedia #Piezoelectric_microphone

  • amazing!

  • BTW Collin, I favorite all your videos!

  • IS there more information somewhere about what made you decide to use that circuit and/or how the circuit works? Like, is this a standard circuit to filter out DC and amplify oscillations on some input?

  • could i use that pre amp for electret mic?

  • That was awesome :)

  • i CANT BELIEVE I ACTUALLY MADE THIS!

  • the combsounded like dolphin eco location sou

  • Folsom prison blues... Johnny cash.... Why does no one listen to country these days

  • can you listen to your heart?

  • what are you doing with your head when your playing?!?!

  • I have home made stereo contact mics on my desk right now! Perfect for for making duel or stereo sounds. The only thing you did different to me was use epoxy resin which seems a lot better than the hot glue I used.

These are so cheap and easy to make and so much fun! :D

  • Agent Smith is just so Cool.

  • I wonder if this thing is sensitive enough to pick up speech if it is attached to a window behind which people are talking.

  • Dislike Bar Vanished

  • Can this be used as a throat Mic so you can talk on a mobile phone without background noise?

  • @mathetos No. They would only hear murmurs. Your mouth shapes the sounds that your voice box makes.

  • Ahhhh I was really hoping you were doing this with the rochelle salt... but awesome.

  • what is that song at 5:46

  • Comment removed

  • This guy is FUCKING AWESOME

  • I just made the same, but without the resistors and it works just fine.

  • awesome. If i would have a guitar I would definitely try this

  • The epoxy is hard so will create high strain on the wires as they exit. Some hot glue or flexible adhesive would be good, or glue the heatshrink into the epoxy.

  • WoW

  • Rock!

  • Your head seems pretty hollow there Collin :P

Just kidding, we all know you have plans for an elaborate time machine inside there.

  • Collin, you are the best DIYer I've ever seen

  • @northenswede KIPKAY FOREVER

  • @ad51hy He has lost it over time, sadly

  • excuse me? sorry, noob curious question? what is a preamp actually? an amplifier before an amplifier? why? because the guitar's sound alone can't be amplified that much by one amplifier? or it's just a device used to convert sound to electrical signal so we can amplify it?

  • @yhevrah The signal that comes from the Piezo or 'contact mic' is way to small for the amp, so it has to pre-amplified (the signal needs to be made stronger) so that it can be used with a guitar amp. Hope that answers your question.

  • if it was placed on the throat would it still pick up

  • I love you Colin.......Would you marry me?

  • Cool video - but I think you may have swapped the labels for SOURCE and DRAIN at 2:00.

  • @nThanksForAllTheFish You are right. However, the MPF102 is a symmetrical FET and this can be reversed. Not all FETs are reversible.

  • @santaana36 Thanks, I did not know that.

  • @directcurrent10 maybe put a differet jack or something on it...

  • @directcurrent10 Or just the body of it like he did in the video..

  • can i a touch an mp3 player to the input jack where you put the mic? co'z i want to amplify an true audio source like mp3 or ipod?..! substitue for mic where you place it.??!.....

  • could i do that with a violin?

  • @OSX86Geek101 yes you could do that...atouch to the string to amplify..!

  • Awesome as always great video learn some thing new every time

  • Is Collin an engineer?

  • @TeenageIronman he is a damn geneus in this fields.!

  • Digital stethascope!

  • That's a MOSFET, not a transistor

  • @qwertyboy1234567899

A MOSFET is a type of transistor.

  • Attatch it to the amp, tap the amp, and watch the infinite loop

  • @qapiojg and run like fuck because it hurts you ears

  • @Dri0m well, and it'll blow the hell out of the amp

  • @qapiojg they call that... feedback

  • @qapiojg That can damage your amp :p

  • @qapiojg That would hurt. In more way's then one...

  • @qapiojg You mean the infinite feedback?

  • @qapiojg it made a ungodly screeching noise
