I just came across a lovely version by Nana Mouskouri of the Greek original, from a London concert in the 70s or early 80s, that someone just recently put up. There you can hear her explaining the legend before she launches into the song.
Thank you, Kiwehtin! I attempted a translation awhile back just using free stuff off the net and finally gave up. So, I really appreciate this translation.
It's a Catalan version (Maria del Mar Bonet sings in her language, Catalan) of Den Itan Nisi "It wasn't an island", by Manos Hadjidakis, also sung by Nana Mouskouri.
the singer:Maria del Mar Bonet i Verdaguer (b.1947)is a Spanish singer from the island of Mallorca. Nacho Duato composed his choreography Jardí tancat ( Shut Garden in Catalan) in 1983, Maria del Mar Bonet composed the music and they were awarded with the first price in the Internationaler Choreographischer Wettbewerb, Köln.
Compania Nacional de Danza is from Spain, but dancers are from the whole world i think. Nacho Duato said (i don't remember it so clear) he could take with him maybe 2 dancers from Maurice Bejart's company. So they are mixed. (Sorry for my english)
The original greek lyrics are phrases from the book of Nikos Kazantzakis. It refers to the wish of Cretans to be free from the Turks.

Puedes sentir la arena bajo tus pies, los rayos de sol, las palmeras, la brisa, el olor a mar, la vitalidad del Mediterráneo.

Oops. Last comment, I forgot to say what to look for. Do a YouTube search for "Nana Mouskouri & The Athenians - Den Itan Nissi".

English translation of her Catalan version:
Like a wounded dragon,
like a small islet dancing upon the sea,
it's a gorgon, the sister of Alexander the Great,
who roars with a cry that sets tempests in motion.
She deliriously soaks the land
and does not hold off until none is free,
she deliriously soaks the land,
near to Crete.

btw tempests means seasons, I think (from the top of my head so it could be wrong but I have Latin so I think its right:P)

The Catalan text is:
Com un drac ferit,
com un illot petit ballant sobre la mar,
és una gorgona, la germana d'Alexandre El Gran,
que gemega amb un crit que mou tempestes.
Amara terres amb deliri
i no amaina fins que totes no són lliures.
Amara terres amb deliri,
prop de Creta.
From her album Gavines i dragons
