The discusion over what motor can take more heat seems strange. The air cooled motors temp is maintained by the oil. Water cooled temperature is maintained by both air and oil. The drag motors do not need much cooling because they only run a short time both air and water cooled. A built VW motor needs a good oil cooler with good air flow if it makes a decent amount of power if you want to drive it on the street no matter what some might think. The same with Water Cooled more power more heat.
That is a nice looking engine with the Porsche style shroud and the sidewinder exhaust with tuck away mufler. Those Porsche shrouds look great but they are pricey and sometimes do not fit very well . I would say $8000 is a lot for that motor but it does sound nice. It would be good to know the specs. Make of crank, rods, valve sizes, cam specs, rocker specs and push rods used. Is it an AS41 case or an Aluminum case or a trick race case.
lol lots of people forget to put in a little teeny peice of metal shroud between the two cylinder barrels on underside of engine, when they rebuild, then they start it up first time and rev the shit outa it, and suprise motor seizes up cuz all the cooling air just dumps out between barrels...lol dont forget all the little sheet metal peices when you rebuild vdub motor lol
@MATIFUSKA Ive been told by Jake Raby that they over cool number 1 and 3 which are the back cylinders, and that they undercool the other two cylinders, he was sayng that they were seeing a huge heat difference in the cylinder heads, IDK though, since ive never run one, i have just heard that without putting some sort of fins inside of them they dont keep everything equally cool, but i have seen plenty of street cars running them and not seeming to care about it so yea...
@threepugsandme i am really tired to read jake raby's bullshit, those are marketing strategies to sell locicero's ugly dtm , my porsche kit cools great, just wanted to know how the bergmann performs, since i have the sharpbuilt kit
CHICO626 -What results have you had using the Porsche style fan shroud versus the stock VW doghouse style? Does it actually cool the engine any better?
Okay, I know this will sound dumb, but I grew up on v8, v6 and dohc and such. This motor..looks alien to me, is it a flat 4 or what? Carb I am guessing?
If you used the 48 webbers it would be much much better... and do a little porting on the heads you can easily get those HP numbers up around the 200+ range.
its pretty much a 2.2 liter AIR COOLED engine. To be able to get that kind of power out of an air cooled engine that is that old is a science. To get much more power you would have to convert it to water cooled so that it could handle the heat of more power. Plus ask your self how much the old porsches weigh... you can strip an old porsch down to around 1800lb... thats a few hundred pounds lighter than a miata... and your not paying for the HP your paying for the high performance engine
yes and as a product have a very whack power band. The power band in this 2.2 is very linear which is important for on the edge driving. Not to mention what Chico626 makes is probably a few times more reliable than a blown motor. All of that however doesn't take away from the correctness of your statement. If you want to go fact in a straight line I guess the turbo could work for you but 174 hp is a lot of power for such a small, light, and well balanced car.
an aircooled can take much more heat than a water cooled LOL. they were made to withstand high heat I gurantee you that an old vw engine with fan disconnected against a new water cooled with radiator removed would be no question a vw engine I've witnessed it many times at salina ks, speedway. kris laufer makes over 1,000 hp out of a turbo aircooled vw. thats far more than 174 hp.That's a science. not this engine. Most people like vw's just for the fact that they are simple and not rocket science
Although these days VW's are probably the most over engineered cars in production, and because of that, a wank stain to work on. The older VW's are the only ones worthwhile, and even then, the ford counter part [fiestas/escorts] are much much better cars and much simpler.
It's making 3-4 times the stock output. What's the problem here? It doesn't take a set hp number to make these cars go fast. They don't weigh anything.
Its an after market unit we sell the kits. Thanks
Chico

I bet if you put a 5 blade fan on there it would make even more power. Too bad those 5 blade fans are kinda rare.

why didn't you used 48s?? you could have gone past 200hp.
eduardolz31 1 year ago
140hp will run mid 13s easy in a vw. 174hp prob, 11s or better.

its a question??? where is the horse power? its way to much money $8000 I can build 2 for that price and do over 200hp

cost would be in the 8000$+ range, to be on the low side, chico uses the best parts available, not cheap chinese shit.

this engine sucks get over it, and a turbo is only good for straight line? what? do you know anything?
