On Monday, July 26, 2010, an estimated 19,000-barrels worth of oil leaked into Marshall Michigan from Enbridge pipelines. 19,000 barrels of oil = 3,020,758.7 Litres of oil right near the great lakes of Canada and the U.S.
In 2009 Enbridge spilled 1,328,020.92 Litres of crude oil within Canada (8,353 barrels). 1 Litre of oil spilled in water can contaminate up to 1,000,000.00 litres of water. If all the oil they spilled ended up in the water it would have contaminated up to 1,328,020,920,000.00 Litres of water. This is one year. Do the math.
This pipeline and oil tankers are the stupidest idea ever. Why spend billions to lose billions for the cleanup of all the damage it is going to inevitably cause. If the country needs money so bad, legalize marijuana, billions of dollars made right there, and no ecological disaster to cleanup, well except for maybe all the discarded chip bags on the highway.
Canada's Prime Minister, Harper is selling Asbestos to third world countries knowing full well that they will be handling the asbestos with no protection. In short he is inflicting poor people with no chance with all sorts of Cancers, and in their countries excruciating deaths. He is trying to streamline the applications for all sorts of mines in Canada. Now the Canadian Government in the name of employment, and economic progress pushes to push a pipeline through paradise. We need your help.
Economies are always more important than food, or air or water. Who needs local and wild fish when you can buy chinese seafood after you sell them the most disgusting oil in the world.
"the world's dirtiest oil" and the term 'tarsand' are both derogatory terms used by extreme enviromentalists working to destroy the Alberta and Canadian economies by focusing world hippy attention on our DOMESTIC ISSUE. It is outrageous that foreiners (USA) are allowed to have a say in the development of OUR natural resources.
Every american that shows face at our own review process should be deported! This is a CANADIAN issue, all other countries --- go home.
Fuck the oil companies and the politicians who whore themselves out to them. We don't need this pipeline, We need strict population control NOW. Restrict immigration and childbirths to 1 child per couple until our population is down to a sustainable level. That's the only realistic approach. DUH.

Enbridge has had 800+ spills, another this week as public hearings start. Gov blames "foreign funded radical environmentalists" for slowing his agenda. With over 4000+ people scheduled to speak, 12 are foreign funded, these12 are representing big oil. 80% of BC oppose this proposal. If Canada has a scrap of democracy left, this will never be more than a tyrants dream and some disappointed shareholders. Canada's biggest oil client is the US. The US uses 360 000 barrels of oil a day on WAR alone.
@lifeQidiotsA It was an oil industry funded poll that was exposed to be false by mainstream media last week. The real numbers were just released. 78% of Canadians oppose this pipe dream in 2 independent polls.
@kimhunter2 Thanks for the info. I voted against in CBC's poll. I was just annoyed with MatttthewF (comments thankfully removed) saying that the majority of Canadians support the pipeline.
Under normal circumstances, the jobs/growth/energy argument is valid. But tar sands =/= crude oil, its scraping the bottom of the oil barrel in terms of efficiency and return on investment, it's purely short-term profit that only benefits a few in the long run. Limitless growth worked but by definiton can't forever. Read anything by Nicole Foss or Richard Heinberg. A few years of prosperity and then bust again with tons of permanently irreplaceable destruction? Not a good business plan.
@albertabeefcowboy84 It's not oil yet, but it's true. Canada has lots and lots of bitumen - at the rate we're going, we will run out of natural gas before we run out of bitumen. This is why there is a proposed nuclear plant to power the tarsands.
Hmm,true but I am not sure about how I feel about a nuke plant there...we will have run out of both bitumen and natural gas before the power plant is even designed, let alone built.Government projects are the slowest.

@MatttthewF Your priorities and values are misguided. I suggest you reconsider the beauty and importance of clean, potable water.
The fact that we already have many pipelines does not mean that we should have more. Shouldn't our tarsands oil stay in Canada if we truly wish to have energy security?
I am from Alberta. Jobs and the economy are important. Without a healthy planet that gives us resources, a healthy economy is not possible.
Silly tree-huggers! How will giant oil companies make the much needed billions in short term profits for their share holders, many of which don't even live in Canada?
The Crown owns YOU and these lands (the crown being that hideous entity City of London, a committee of 12 banks headed by the Bank of England (House of Rothschild). And they will be wanting to exploit all resources wherein to enrich their bloated coffers. They will not be stopped by a small assemblage of concerned citizens, or a ragtag column of Indigenous People; perhaps by only an act of God the Creator (not their God: GUNS, OIL AND DRUGS). Pray for one of the last remaining untouched worlds.
"You are fear mongering. We are not going to destroy the planet by producing & distributing some Alberta Oil"
That may be true, but that doesnt stop the fact the tar sands are the biggest environmental dissaster on the planet.
"Further, we have some of the best scientists & engineers in the world"
Well, we shouldnt be giving oil companies (ie: one of the most profitable industries) a bypass to environmental regulations before they can figure out how to stay in them.
@MatttthewF The point is that if we continue to destroy the planet- our habitat- our children won't have anything left to eat for supper. That's not some radical liberal theory, it's a fact. We CANNOT destroy that which gives and maintains our lives.
Its actually cannabis production. But the harper government wants to stamp it out.
"Alberta oil helps to pay for free health care, welfare"
Thats not the issue. the issue is that the government subsidizes incredibly profitable companies and ignores environmental regulations in order to make this project profitable.
Oil companies are not scared away easily. the cards are in our hands, if they want to dig, we dictate the terms.
We are all radicals! See this video in the context of Con MP Joe Oliver's recent comments at The Twain Shall Meet ~ Harper Government Drops the Ball.......
Alright you "radical groups" with your "radical ideological agenda"... the Feds have had just about enough out of you... nrcan.gc.ca/media-room/news-release/2012/1/3520
B.C is a wonderful place! and should be protected! (but this does not mean the pipeline should not go through. Improve the redundancy of safety mechanisms and Hold EMBRIDGE IN WRITING! to a safety protocol that exeeds current standards. IN WRITING hold them and the tankers responsible for failure and malfunction! no beans about it, let it go through, but lets not get walked on.
The Queen Charrlotte Islands is the place i worry about most, it is amazing, balance is needed, as is assurance!.
Keep in mind some of the people making comments here are paid shills of Corporations and/or the Government, folks. If some people are too ignorant to understand that maintaining the environment which supports ALL life, both human and non, is more important than increasing the personal fortunes of a few hundred people, then you have to understand that these people can't see beyond their own bellies, or personal greed. Creating another oil spill is not 'progress', it's the exact opposite.
They will not proceed regardless of what choice the Federal Government makes. If they proceed they will meet the resistance of our creator, though our hands.
Ohhhhh! This has to be stopped! It is ONLY about the profit for this big oil-pipeline company, no one gives a s... about the people, the animals and the environment up there in Canada. Lets hope, that the government steps in and does the right thing = being to keep the promise that they gave to the First Communities up there! Ohh my....
You can't not stop progress and this oil project is very important for the Canadian economy. Most of the oppoisition to the pipeline comes from rich American money because they do not want us to sell our oil to China.
We must have this pipeline in order to spread out our exports to other than America. Stop opposing what is good for our country and get on the bankwagon to help eliminate poverty at home.
@CryingWolf57 I guess you must be one of our indians that lined his pockets with enviro money that is coming in to bribe assholes like you to oppose what is in our countries best interests.
Only assholes and idiots would oppose a pipeline to sell our oil to asian markets. Our countries need this money to pay you lazy indians that do not want to work for a living.
What a bunch of lazy good for nothing bums, we are sick of keeping you for nothing.
@justanoldman1 Canada does not NEED THIS, and you're and idiot, you have no right to talk about lives you don't know, and lands you don't own, I'm a native of Kitamaat and speaking for my people we are prosperous both economically and environmentally, we xaisla's don't need money and don't need the pipeline, and you're an idiot for thinking this will help, how much money do you think will be going into the clean up of a spill from the douglas channel?
@teykwa Do you and your people live the same way you did 100 years ago? No of course not and that is called progress and what you are doing is trying to stop progress with your closed mind.
This money that will be generated is needed by our country and you have no right to try and block it. One of the main reasons Canada did better during the last global turn down was out oil and we must expand it in order to fund our social programs. Stop being a retard and see the light.
@justanoldman1 we may not live the ways our people did 100 years ago but it seems you still claim your peoples ignorance, we have made more money off of metal and radioactive isotopes than we have on oil (both already existing in Canada) not to mention the fact that BC is getting one of the biggest ports in Vancouver in the upcoming years, again Canada does not NEED this they WANT it, as I said earlier what if a spill happened? it will be pushed south to the states by our channel
Within 2 minutes of watching this one can realise..."what a stupid plan". Guess there's more money in cleaning up disasters than selling oil (BP sets the precident ?)
"Are Canadians unable to process their own RAW MATERIALS"
We have refineries. Are you stupid? Are you telling me you have never seen an oil refinery in canada before?
The reason why is that it is more expensive to separate the components and sell individually. Besides, if we just sold the good stuff, we would be stuck with all the byproducts.
@boonw I think that there is more PROFIT in refining than there is in only selling the crude AND more Canadians get paid when we go through all the steps of extracting and refining and also the byproducts can be sold. The more you do with what you have, the more that you get.
But I still don't like any pipelines, especially running through the Rocky Mountains! (there's avalanches all the time)
"I think that there is more PROFIT in refining than there is in only selling the crude"
It doesnt matter what you think, its what they can sell. This is something I learned in high school chemistry. Almost all of the oil is used no matter what destination it goes to, and the SHIPPING COSTS are far lower if you put the couple hundred components together, rather than ship them separately.
Tell me, how are you going to ship several hundred chemicals through 1 pipeline?
"more Canadians get paid when we go through all the steps of extracting and refining"
And what makes you think that other countries care where the oil is coming from.If we dramatically increase the price for export, what makes you think they would buy it over other oil sources?
If China wants oil, they will look at all clients. If Russia is offering them crude oil at a cheap price, and we are marketing a large amounts of refined products at high price, they will buy Russian.
"The more you do with what you have, the more that you get"
The more steps you have, the harder it is to sell.
Let me ask you this, what do we do with the byproducts that are too cheap to export? Where are you going to store them? How are you going to pay for the storage fees when the demand for certain components is low? How are you going to pay for all the extra management?
Oil may be in high demand, but we still have to stay competitive.
@boonw If we cant finish the job completely we should never have opened the oil pit. You know the old saying - DON'T LET YOUR MOUTH SIGN CHECKS that YOUR ASS CAN'T CASH. boooo, hisssss, down with endbridge and their pipeline!
"I want a high paying job at a refinery - NOT MINIMUM WAGE AT F'n GAS STATION!"
Then get an education on what you are bitching about before you complain. If you want job creations in refineries, go and convince china to buy the oil separated. Better yet, get them to buy the byproducts also.
I think it would be to our advantage to put up a pertition against all this pollution that is very possible to the environment, all the forest creatures great and small and to us the people of this great province.we should put this both the federal and provincial governments. Before this gets out of hand...
we can not turn a blind eye to this pending disaster.Enbridge doesn't benefit us,
they are there to make an incredible profit for their investors and themselves not the wildlife and sea life.Spread the word and voice your opinion..stop this proposal!
WE NEED TO BE STRONG PEOPLE AND STAND UP AGAINST THIS PIPELINE AND OIL TANKERS! LOOK AT OUR FOOD RESOURCES ITS OUR LIVELIHOOD AND FOR SURVIVAL. AS FIRST NATIONS PEOPLE! TAKE ACTION NOW!!!! DON'T WAIT BEFORE ITS TO LATE!
@skillz4f I'm ex Bc Packers Worker.. poor fish management by dfo almost completely wiped out Fraser River Sockeye for ever.21 years later a decent amount return for spawning. I'm extremely choked you natives are even having to fight for your rights... A complete bc ban on super tankers in bc. Makes sense. Show oil comp and Harper we wont be pushed around by oil companies the way BP did in gulf of mexico.. NO TANKERS BC PERIOD
I will lose faith in our country if this terrible and devastating plan goes through. I will not watch the coast of BC be ruined by money-hungry oil tycoons! Is there an online petition that I can sign? I've joined the Facebook group but I haven't found anything else.
@gophermaster Though I try to do the proper things to stop our government from selling out to the highest bidder, when it comes to these kind of things it is hard not to get jaded. The government has so many rules in place to stop the good people from doing harm and when a big company comes along the process goes out the window as the government bows down to them. Environmental and public process becomes a formality to be worked around and ignored. 90% opposed to a project and it goes through.
The Site-C dam on the Peace River is also part of this - fertile farm land and important moose-calving grounds will be dammed to provide power for the oil sands, so that the oil can go into the pipeline. The Treaty-8 Tribal Association is opposing Site-C, Environmentalists and First Nations -- all of us -- must work together to stop this devastation.
@jillianbrid Yeah The peace River spill../ Classic example of govt and oil companies comin first before The People.. School closed .. 120 people complaining of nausea and headaches.. And the oil company monitoring. and saying zero signs of harmful gasses. Thats exactly the way bp handled the gulf.. Total disregard for human life.... This tiime luckily it wasn't fatal.. The monitoring has stop bein done by oil companies.,. In Canada.. They care about
Thanks for sharing. I don't understand why we are still producing oil, it's as dead a technology as VHS tapes. This makes me angry and I'm going to be writing letters to the govt. about it.
we should grow hemp biodeisel and take the first step to saving our planet! the future is still unwritten, but its our choice to make a decision to do somthing. come on CANADA!????
This is MADNESS!!!!!!!! Remember Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico...remember how reckless the oil companies were. The risk to this pristine environment is just too high. The routes are too dangerous. A spill and the destruction of this beautiful environment is predictable! This project must be stopped!!!!!!!!!
This video needs more exposure. Information is the best way to handel this kind of developement. Do most Canadians even realise this is happening right now?
@EconoChallenge I didn't know about it until now :O( This is crap. When will it stop. This is why they don't allow this crap in the Yukon. Although they want to run pipeline through here from Alaska. Just because Alaska is being destroyed by Oil/Gas and logging why should we do the same. It must be stopped!!!! I would love to go back to horse and wagon. Smartin' up Canada ;o)

"The biggest industry in BC is tourism"
Its actually cannabis production. But the harper government wants to stamp it out.
"Alberta oil helps to pay for free health care, welfare"
Thats not the issue. the issue is that the government subsidizes incredibly profitable companies and ignores environmental regulations in order to make this project profitable.
Oil companies are not scared away easily. the cards are in our hands, if they want to dig, we dictate the terms.

Only assholes and idiots would oppose a pipeline to sell our oil to asian markets. Our countries need this money to pay you lazy indians that do not want to work for a living.
What a bunch of lazy good for nothing bums, we are sick of keeping you for nothing.

@justanoldman1 Canada does not NEED THIS, and you're and idiot, you have no right to talk about lives you don't know, and lands you don't own, I'm a native of Kitamaat and speaking for my people we are prosperous both economically and environmentally, we xaisla's don't need money and don't need the pipeline, and you're an idiot for thinking this will help, how much money do you think will be going into the clean up of a spill from the douglas channel?
teykwa 1 month ago in playlist conservation 3
@teykwa Do you and your people live the same way you did 100 years ago? No of course not and that is called progress and what you are doing is trying to stop progress with your closed mind.
This money that will be generated is needed by our country and you have no right to try and block it. One of the main reasons Canada did better during the last global turn down was out oil and we must expand it in order to fund our social programs. Stop being a retard and see the light.
justanoldman1 1 month ago
@justanoldman1 we may not live the ways our people did 100 years ago but it seems you still claim your peoples ignorance, we have made more money off of metal and radioactive isotopes than we have on oil (both already existing in Canada) not to mention the fact that BC is getting one of the biggest ports in Vancouver in the upcoming years, again Canada does not NEED this they WANT it, as I said earlier what if a spill happened? it will be pushed south to the states by our channel

Risking the death of our province for fat cats in calgary and Houston enriching themselves while fuelling China ?
This makes no sense for the people of BC.

Why do CANADIANS want to sell raw CRUDE OIL?
Are Canadians unable to process their own RAW MATERIALS what is the reason?
I want a high paying job at a refinery - NOT MINIMUM WAGE AT F'n GAS STATION!
durwinpocha 2 months ago
@durwinpocha
"Why do CANADIANS want to sell raw CRUDE OIL?"
Because thats what the client orders.
"Are Canadians unable to process their own RAW MATERIALS"
We have refineries. Are you stupid? Are you telling me you have never seen an oil refinery in canada before?
The reason why is that it is more expensive to separate the components and sell individually. Besides, if we just sold the good stuff, we would be stuck with all the byproducts.
boonw 2 months ago

Tell me, how are you going to ship several hundred chemicals through 1 pipeline?
boonw 2 months ago
@durwin
"more Canadians get paid when we go through all the steps of extracting and refining"
And what makes you think that other countries care where the oil is coming from.If we dramatically increase the price for export, what makes you think they would buy it over other oil sources?
If China wants oil, they will look at all clients. If Russia is offering them crude oil at a cheap price, and we are marketing a large amounts of refined products at high price, they will buy Russian.
boonw 2 months ago
@durwinpocha
Oil may be in high demand, but we still have to stay competitive.
boonw 2 months ago
@boonw If we cant finish the job completely we should never have opened the oil pit. You know the old saying - DON'T LET YOUR MOUTH SIGN CHECKS that YOUR ASS CAN'T CASH. boooo, hisssss, down with endbridge and their pipeline!

"I want a high paying job at a refinery - NOT MINIMUM WAGE AT F'n GAS STATION!"
Then get an education on what you are bitching about before you complain. If you want job creations in refineries, go and convince china to buy the oil separated. Better yet, get them to buy the byproducts also.

The Treaty-8 Tribal Association is opposing Site-C, Environmentalists and First Nations -- all of us -- must work together to stop this devastation.
jillianbrid 1 year ago 2
@jillianbrid Yeah The peace River spill../ Classic example of govt and oil companies comin first before The People.. School closed .. 120 people complaining of nausea and headaches.. And the oil company monitoring. and saying zero signs of harmful gasses. Thats exactly the way bp handled the gulf.. Total disregard for human life.... This tiime luckily it wasn't fatal.. The monitoring has stop bein done by oil companies.,. In Canada.. They care about
