This is complicated stuff, and i think a good way to understand how the switch system works, is by playing Gmod with the Wiremod addon.
Look up "Little Big Planet Calculator" it shows how calculators work and is probably the BEST representation of how they work. Its ALL just "On and Off" switches.

If you want to find out how a chip itself interacts with the software, then look up abstraction layers.

Im average intelligence, a college grad, I worked a power plant professionally for 30 year, and never blew it up. @12FlyMe Well, each switch "transistor" has three "pegs" the in-current peg, the out-current peg, and the "switch" peg between them. when a current is applied to the switch peg, a current will not flow through the transistor making false. But when there's not current to the switch peg, current will flow, meaning true. it's basically a logical not gate. the game Minecraft has them, and people have made some nifty things using them. Including an 8-bit adding machine.
Well it actually doesn't add negatives. It almost seems a CPU was designed by accountants. It uses entries vs counter entries to get teh job done just like ledgers.

Oh, and it can multiply. Generally a microprocessor implements some form of a pyramid multiplier as is found in Donald Knuth's Art of Computer Programming Volume 2. Far too complex to describe here though.
